They're ridiculously hard to find after mushroom hill, and they're only in the first four zones of SnK. Flying Battery literally makes you push over spikes to find any, something that is never done or hinted at in any other point in the series, and the one accessible to sonic in sandopolis act 2 is in the middle of a point of no return.

@@Eggscramblercomms Pushing spikes? I found both of the rings in Act 1 without needing to any of that - I didn't even know that you _could_ push the spikes. For the first one, just stick to the low path and use Tails or get an electric shield. The second one is even easier, just fall to the bottom of the big vertical tube with the capsules and go to the left. The one accessible to Sonic in Act 2 is absolutely trivial to find as it's on the compulsory route right at the end. If anything, the game encourages you to find them across all of the zones (omitting Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg) because the game actually removes some of the rings from Mushroom Hill when it's part of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Probably already knew this but Fun Fact: In the original Sonic 3 (the one that was gonna come w/ the & Knuckles portion) between Carnival Night and Ice Cap was Flying Battery. You'd be launched into the airship through the cannon and then when landing in Ice Cap, you'd be snowboarding off the door you kick off. So the transition made 10% more sense.

Sega did a good job with the advertising to sell the idea of Sonic being fast, in an effort to differentiate both their mascot and their hardware from Nintendo, but the game was already under development as this was being figured out. They were very much riffing on Mario, which has similar kinds of stop-and-start obstacles, and didn't have time to fully apply the high concept they settled on until the sequel.

Let's look back at Mario which supposedly has stop and go level design, how many times do you see a 2D mario speed runner actually stop. It's why people hate the auto scroll levels they introduced in 3, because Mario also rewarfed speed for learning the level. Sonic fanboy take incoming but there's only three to five really bad Sonic games those games being Sonic 06, Unleashed, Forces, and Shadow but even then some don't even agree about Unleashed and Shadow being that bad. Secert Rings and Black Knight are just shitty Wii games lots of series had shitty Wii games but I don't see Zelda videos still bring up Link's Crossbow Training. I feel as if the Internet has overblown the hate this series gets from the games, the characters, and hell even the fanbase because every fanbase is shit. All I have to say to wrap this up is that have you ever noticed whenever someone brings up Sonic's rough transistion post Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it's always the same games I keep mentioning with the occasional "Big the Cat" or "Sonic kissed a women 14 years ago."

I personally will always prefer the adventure games, the advance games, and heroes over the classic games. That just what I grew up with, and while yeah, they have their problems, they offer so much in terms of gameplay and style. The advance games introduced me to my favorite character in the series, Cream and Cheese, and Sonic Heroes brought in my second favorite, being E-123 Omega. But even though I prefer those games over the classics, I will never deny how much the classic games did so well, and I will always hold a high level of respect for them. Sonic mania is the best thing to come out of sonic this entire decade. I LOVE every inch of mania. With that said, I really hope sonic team decides to push the series forward in terms of the 3d department, because 3D hasn’t been too great lately. Forced 2D sections, no playable characters besides sonic, shotty level design, the tone has been dumbed down, just moving in a circle feels bad. I’d love for the series to retry the adventure formula and figure out what made them fun, as well as what made us love the characters and world of Sonic. April 20th is only so far away, we’ll find out what the future has in store for us soon enough. Sonic the hedgehog is my favorite video game series of all time. The music, the fun wide variety of characters, the speedy gameplay, the beautiful creative scenery, I love sonic so so much, but it feels like the series has been pandering to outsiders rather than genuine fans like me, so I really hope they find a permanent fix for the series that satisfies the fans that were there through thick and thin.

While there are really bad Sonic games like Sonic 06 and the worst Sonic game of all time Rise of Lyric; or at the least big name disappointments like Forces, there are some genuinely fun ones like Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 (especially SA2 Battle), Colors, Generations, and the day time sections in Unleashed. Not to mention the first Advance feels like a more proper Sonic 4 than Sonic 4 itself (it helps Advance was made back when Dimps knew how to make proper Sonic games).

The entire extras menu for SMC was such a trip, the music made me feel nostalgic for an era I never experienced. The art and the comics made me feel a bit of that era, like how is it possible to feel hand-me-down nostalgia just because of the Extra's menu song, aptly named History. My only real memory of sonic at the time was Sonic Underground with SA2 and SMC were my introduction to these games. Somehow the SMC gives me both nostalgia for the era I never lived while at the same time making me remember the good times on gamecube. All I'm saying is bitches better add the Extras menu song to spotify

SERIOUSLY. For me, someone that did grow up with Genesis Sonic, that Extras menu song gives me chills and if I hang around and check out the History section for too long I start to tear up. I dunno why but one of the first childhood memories I always flash back to is a day I was sick in bed & when my dad came home that afternoon, he brought me a VHS tape of the Sonic OVA with a package of blue Sno-balls. A replacement for my original Genesis 2 was the very first thing I bought when I received my first ever paycheck, too.

I do understand the problems people have with cd... But I really wish people appreciated some aspects it did really well. It's music is typically a standard for music quality and is really good. The presentation too is very good in moments like the metal sonic race. I feel that's where the creative side of sonic was born creating a lot of very weird and unique level visuals

In Sonic 2, collect all the Chaos Emeralds and beat the game. If you don't turn the console off and start a new game after the credits end, you will have all of the Chaos Emeralds still collected. Meaning: you're able to use Super Sonic through your whole second playthrough.

There are plenty of Giant Rings in Flying Battery, Sandopolis, and Lava Reef. They're just much better hidden than Mushroom Hill.

Sonic 2 has a way of dealing with the last few zones, built into the game. By simply completing early zones quickly, which is generally easy, you get a lot of points, and if you have a certain amount of bonus points at the end of a level, you get a continue. This means you can get four continues after two zones, generally easily. Just save those, and you can save yourself a lot of heartbreak at the end.

I 100% Sonic 2 and felt hurt by his description of the emerald hunting. Granted, I did it on the remastered mobile version. But it was quite satisfying for me to get all seven emeralds in Emerald Hill alone.

I just took this in, Modern Sonic can use the all of the secondary effects of the elemental shields. Even the Gold Shield. The Flame Shield is basically an Air Boost, something he could do since Unleashed. The Electric Shield is pretty obvious. Some Sonic games give him a double jump, Like Sonic R, Smash Bros, Colours, Lost World and Forces. The Bubble Shield is his bound (I didn't misspell bounce, it's called a bound jump) from SA2, 06 and Lost World. The Gold Shield is self explanatory (it's the Homing Attack) but the secondary funtion (if no enemies are in homing attack range), Sonic performs the Stomp, something he's had since Unleashed.

I do think that it is of lower quality than most games on this list, but I also think it is heavily underrated and most people bypass it as bad because it wasn't the best choice for Sonic team to make.

There is, however, one redeeming feature of Sonic 2: if you get more than 10,000 points (or is it 50,000?) in bonuses in a single act, you get a free Continue. This means that if you speed through EHZ 1 and 2, you can get two continues after the first level. Then you can get the Emeralds in the next few zones and use the Continues in Metropolis and Death Egg.
