Actually, it was 7 (if you count both acts of Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base). The competition select screen was also originally a Michael Jackson composition, but in Origins they resurrected the November 1993 prototype track to replace it. I actually like that one better, so I'm not upset at all. It's too bad about the other tracks though. Carnival Night has terrible sound quality, Ice Cap sounds good but isn't the same without the original track and Launch Base sounds super squeaky and does not fit the zone at all. What a bummer.

Choc, listen to the prototype soundtrack to see how we were STILL robbed when it comes to these replaced tracks. All the tracks sound much better when from the actual Genesis/Mega Drive, rather than through Origins' filtered music system. Also, Sonic & Knuckles' already-existing replacement tracks were used when possible for between-game jingles, like the mini-boss theme, Knuckles' theme, and the invincibility theme. The 1-up jingle and the title screen theme were kept as Sonic 3's, however. EDIT: Oh, and the Bonus Stage you go to is based on how many Rings you have when you pass the checkpoint.

The different sound isn't a result of filtering, but the prototype they were taken from. The November 1993 prototype uses later versions of the tracks. Only the Super Sonic theme was newly created for Origins.

Yuji Naka confirmed on Twitter regarding the soundtrack that the replaced music tracks (Launch Base, Ice Cap, Carnival Night, and Act 1 Boss) were done by Michael Jackson. The verdict on why they were changed is still out, though; prevailing theories are that Jackson was unsatisfied with the Genesis sound chip's ability to reproduce the music, or that the legal issues surrounding Jackson in the mid 90s caused Sega to terminate the partnership (which may be why he remains uncredited even in releases featuring his music). The only change unrelated to Jackson regarding the music is Ice Cap, which was an at the time unreleased track by Sonic 3 composer Brad Buxer's band, The Jetzons, titled "Hard Times."

This is my favourite of the classics, had so much fun with this one, love how it looks, the soundtrack and gameplay, and bosses plus it had the best bound stages (apart from sonic manias bound stages) love the story too, being super sonic and hyper was cool. Happy I was able to beat and get the good ending first try, again thank goodness for the coins. Had a lot of fun playing and beating all these classics. 💙

A few comments: 1) In the Special Stages, collecting every single ring will give a 50,000 point bonus (essentially a free extra life) and collecting 50 earns a Continue. 2) As far as Hyper Sonic vs Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic has that Hyper Flash that clears the screen and also acts as a directional double jump, but he can also breathe underwater. 3) For the Giant Rings, while all of the Sonic 3 zones have at least one Giant Ring, only the Sonic and Knuckles zones up to and including Lava Reef contain them. So for you to get your 7th Super Emerald in Lava Reef 2 was very lucky, as if you passed without getting it, you'd be screwed. 4) Would you be willing to play the missions? I've heard that they are really fun.

Congrats on completing the Sonic Genesis trilogy! This was a childhood favorite of mine! Probably one of (if not) the best Sonic game in the series, IMO. I think Sega was forced to split the game in half as they couldn't fit the entire game on one cartridge at the time. You have to admit, the lock-on technology was pretty novel back in the 90s.

I love Sonic 3 and Knuckles! I played the original 3 on my DS like 12 years ago and 3 was always my favorite. I played it way more than the other 2. I did 3 by itself, then Knuckles, then played the 2 combined, then played through 3 as Knuckles, then Knuckles as Knuckles, and then the full thing as Knuckles! Good times.

Hey Choctopus, you should play through the Knuckles story of this game. There aren't any scripted cutscenes as it isn't included in the main story for some reason, but it brings the story of Angel Island to a close and is definitely worth a shot for the added challenge!

Fun fact! If you touch the top layer of blue spheres in a 4x4, they'll all turn into rings. It's very useful for chaos/super emerald speedruns :) A tip for Super/Hyper Sonic: Press the jump button twice to do a dash mid-air. It's useful for gaining instant speed.
