I believe you rank everybody fairly as you normally do, but may I ask if you have made an analysis of Aizen? I was looking for one but I never found one except TYBW Aizen and your Tsukishima and Aizen countering the Almighty video. So I’m not sure, I apologize for the long reply 😅

Like it. It's a shame many were nerfed and didn't get to shine while being left in limbo. Still they were facing an enemy that was subverting the traditional Samurai honor tactics they follow so there.

Very good list.Only Mashiro might be number 4 but I'm not sure because zombie Kira is so vague. But I think She is stronger than Matsumoto.

It really depends on the weight off pure power in ranking but Mashiro is ungodly strong compared to other vice captains she might deserve a higher spot even considering her being basically braindead. I didn't know Hisagi Shuhei had a bankai I would consider him number 1 over Renji if that's the case. While it's one of the best aspects off the series the wealth of awesomely designed characters also limits the time they can be properly developed, we don't really have enough to compare them to eachother.

You know something funny? It took me a second to realize it was Renji above Hisagi because my head Canon still just considered him a Captain anyway. Like... God man Renji was basically written to be a Captain but Byakuya surviving made him stay second fiddle to him.

I love Byakuya, but it would have been so good for the story and to wrap up his character arc for him to die after being humbled by the invasion and asking Ichigo to save the soul society.

It never bothered me that much. He's not a type of a character to seek authority and influence. Renji got everything he deserved: unlocked his true bankai, now stays as probably the strongest of all lieutenants and bangs a captain, who is his childhood friend and is arguably still weaker than him. And has a daughter who resembles one of the best female characters in Bleach (sadly not quite canonical).

I totally agree. I was little confused on how he downplayed Tobiume. They aren't just fireballs they explode on contact. So when she mixed it with her Kido I was like DAMN!

@@midosabbagh the only time Momo was a hindrance to the team was when she was being manipulated by Aizen which doesn't even count because everyone was. When she jumped in to save Shinji it was a sneak attack and she was confident Tobiume could maybe counter Bambis bombs. Which isn't a bad idea. She saved Rangiku in Karakura town and protected Shinji during the TYBW. I agree I think she's over Nanao because she's shown proficiency with Kido and has an actual useful zanpakuto

I feel like renji should've been promoted to captain in the epilogue. I know there is the argument that he has too much loyalty to byakuya but the way I interpreted the relationship was very different from ikkakus relationship to kenpachi. Renji has a lot of respect for byakuya but i don't think he has the same mindset of I want to serve under this person for the rest of my life like ikkaku did.

@@The300Player personally I didnt mind the other visoreds coming back to the soul society due to the fact that they needed to fill in captain positions left by aizen, gin, and tosen. While the visoreds seem to hold a grudge against the soul society the only one that seems to be completely unforgiving is hiyori.

Imo Kira would absolutely destroy Ikakku. He's a jack of all trades in every other aspect except his Zanpakuto, but I see him more as a specialist because of it. He has matchups where Wabisuke is OP and some where Wabisuke is almost useless.

Akon has been working under Urahara over a hundred years ago, perhaps same age with Byakuya and Gin. I think Akon has vast knowledge in Kido and of course, scientific skills which maybe used for combat purposes, in my opinion.

Ikkaku and Hisagi are stronger than some Captains like Isane, Iba and Lisa. Renji kind of even doesn't count as he's way more powerful than Kensei, Soi Fon and Rose, with Mayuri, Shinji and Hitsugaya around his level, and Byakuya, Kenpachi and Kyoraku above him.

@@MaxIronsThird I feel that Lisa is arguably stronger than Ikkaku and Hisagi, remember that she could fight against Harribel one on one and wasn't too intimidated by her, and could fight off a mutated version of white for a full hour without even using her mask. Not to mention as a captain now she has a bankai, and if Hagarotombo's bankai is a power based one then she could stack it on top of her mask like Ichigo does.

I would argue that Momo is stronger than Nanao because she is more well-rounded and has had battle experience. Supplementary material states that the fifth division was trained in all arts because Sosuke was a master of all forms of combat. Really good shunpo, Zanpakuto expert, and unique takes on low and mid-level kido (stated by Toshirou to be a master of kido) Other than that Im pretty fine with the list Momo seemed just a little under Kira in Soul Society arc.

Verrrrry pleased with your placing of Rangiku in this list, she is brilliant, she'sproven herself against many enemies and even other Lieutenants from time to time. Her unwavering loyalty to her Captain stabs me in the heart every time, her and Toshiro are family and no one can take that head canon away from me LOL She proves it when she stands up to Gin to help Toshiro. Like I think she is the only one that ever survived the Reiatsu stealing experiments, most of the victims died from that since it takes all away your reiatsu. Rangiku isn't a pretty face, it's more the curvature of her body & her personality that attract admirers. Rangiku is quite strong for a VC & I want to see Haineko's Bankai during the Hell Arc. I agree that Squad 10 Always seemed like Family & then TYBW made it canon that they were an extended family to Ichigo with Isshin being their former captain. Before the Blood War, Rangiku seemed maybe 5th Strongest VC behind Renji, Rukia, Chojiro, & Shuhei. She's stronger than Ikkaku in my opinion, if you consider that Harribel considered her almost Captain Level as she singlehandedly was fighting her Fraccion, even if she was no match for all 3 of them at once.

I agree, Nanao really has no combat readiness as Tommo himself admitted. Momo, while holding a certain Leeroy Jenkins-level snap reaction--jumping in without thinking--you can't say she isn't lacking confidence or suffering from too much fear of battle, even if she was shown to prefer 'not fighting' as well...in the Academy, it was Momo, and not Renji or Izuru, who moved to help Shuhei against the huge hollow that was attacking their class, with little hesitation. She was driven by grief, but even so it's a mark of confidence that she would attack Gin and Toshiro to avenge Aizen, Captains obviously far more powerful than she is, and, of course, even trying to get Bambietta. Nanao had a sacred treasure tailor-made to help her semi-defeat one of the most powerful Stern Ritter, but Momo showed far better ability in combat and, even if it was mostly just as an emergency medic, she did quite a bit behind the scenes in TYBW--more than Nanao really did.

Without her zanpakuto she put up a barrier strong enough for Jugo to compliment and before he even broke her first barrier she had another one up which he said he'd have to get violent to brake.. She was handed a weapon that was designed to be super-effective against him both offensively and defensively, still got almost killed, had to have her captain back her up even to have the resolve to face him, and still didn't actually defeat him even so (since he fell to the Seireitei below, having lost his wings and halo but otherwise being just fine). True, constructing two barriers to help protect against Jugo was fairly impressive, but he still chided her for it as much as praised her because it did nothing to help the other shinigami fight back or even survive against Quincy, just created a little stalemate. Very nice Kido, but in combat, outside of that one moment against Lille with a Deus Ex Machina cheat item, she did little. What did Momo do in the final arc? Only perform live-saving emergency treatment for two captains that got them back into fighting shape, and OBLITERATE an army of Soldats with a few shots of her Tobiume in order to save Omaeda & sis and Soi Fon. True, it wasn't much, but it was still much more general usefulness than what Nanao did, and Nanao, remember, did NOTHING of any actual note in any other arc of Bleach. The question is, who is the more combat-ready and prepared lieutenant? If I'm going for fighting one particular god-like Quincy or sitting around protected and uninvolved for long periods of time, sure, I'll call Nanao. If general fighting or healing or anything else needs to be done, I'll take Momo, thank you very much.

thinking now, Kubo clearly didn't want Ikkaku to do much during the second invasion, otherwise he would go to Ouetsu as well to get his zanpaktou reforged and become stronger. I mean the other people close to Ichigo were taken, so why not him as well?

I think Hisagi is the best vice-captain. The only reason imo Renji is higher is because he got stronger in the last arc unlike Hisagi but in terms of personality, characters and mindset, Hisagi is the best vice-captain.

@@Rhekon it says a lot that his Bankai earned the respect of Yamamoto, and that Yamamoto charged him with guarding the Barrier's exterior in the Fake Karakura arc. Should Aizen have had other Arrancar in reserve and attacked the barrier from without (as they were unaware of the details in Aizen's plans or how many Arrancar he even had), Chojiro alone would have had to hold them off. Ichigo taking him out in arc SS arc isn't a testament to how weak Chojiro is, but how important it is to keep up spiritual pressure. Ichigo made the same mistake against Kenpachi: he let up on his spiritual pressure for a single moment... and Kenpachi effortlessly pierced his Zanpakuto and damn near killed him. There's no way someone who's been officer class for 2,000 years, making him the oldest living Soul Reaper aside from Yamamoto, even older than Unahana, could possibly be weak. He became captain class before Shunsui and Ukitake even began training as a Soul Reaper.

Great video…I don’t disagree with this ranking, but I’m just a little confused with the double-standard when you use Momo rushing in to attack Bambietta to defend/avenge her fallen Captain Shinji as a main example of what her issues are, yet you praise Renji for his loyalty when he attacks As Nodt after the latter defeats Byakuya, who takes the recklessness to another level when he uses bankai in spite of knowing that they can steal it, like you say

I like the ranking, however I would personally put Hinamori above Nanao, because Hinamori knows how to fight and is also a kido master. She may not be as intelligent or as calm as Nanao, but she would likely have far more combat experience. So I feel she should at least be above Nanao.

I like to think he was supposed to get his moment against Mask de Maskuline. Fighting side-by-side with Ikkaku where they'd both use Bankai. They'd beat the snot out of Mask only for his cheer amp to allow him to break free of Hisagi's Bankai and take down both Ikkaku and Shuhei. That's how he knew about the little guy being Mask's real power. But since the end result was still the same and Kubo was rushing as all hell, the fight was cut.

Renji wasn't supposed to be Vice-Captain at this point, even Rukia was promoted. Resurrecting Byakuya was one of the worse decisions Kubo ever took in Bleach, it's the last arc, everyone can die with no repercussions to sales or merchandise.

Well your ranking is pretty solid! It’s based more on feats and showings and that’s dope. However I feel that Vice Captains are not really suppose to be main fighters. They are essentially like the secretaries of their squads. Alot of them rely on their Zanpaktou heavily and aren’t well rounded or are specialized in one area. I think the main guide for how strong a Vice Captain is should be in their leadership ability and character. Going down the list (by squad) 1. Chojiro was Captain level and had a bankai but we never see him do anything.. 1. Nanao was definitely a non combatant but had skills in intelligence gathering and kido plus was a strong enough leader to convince individuals like Kenpachi to focus on the task at hand, 2. Omaeda was an oof but was the patrol corps leader a position I doubt he obtained without some leadership ability. His lack of skill in combat could be due to times of peace. 3. Kira was one of the stronger Vice Captains.. having excellent leadership skills, being well rounded in combat and support roles and having a useful Zanpaktou. 4. Isane was another non combatant being a in a squad that is mostly support. Her healing ability was said to be rivaled by Iemura and inferior to Seinoske. 4. Kiyone was probably a good leader taking on the responsibilities of a Vice Captain and Captain as a 3rd Seat but is another non combatant, support specialist. 5. Momo was one of the more combat oriented Vice Captains with her abilities centered around kido and her Zanpaktou. She may have had to step up as a leader in Aizen’s absence despite being traumatized by his betrayal. 6. Renji is amongst the strongest Vice Captains and potentially the strongest being completely combat oriented. He seems to be a natural leader probably more so than his Captain. 7. Iba is implied to be a strong Vice Captain and is well rounded as far as being a leader enough to earn the captains promotion. 7. Iemura is a support specialist but has been shown to have leadership ability and rivals his superior Isane in healing ability. 9. Shuhei is probably the strongest Vice Captain overall. He excels in leadership, combat and support. And he was able to defeat his former captain something the other Vice Captains like Renji were ultimately unable to do. 9. Mashiro is purely combat focused and seems to lack leadership skills however this may be due to her childish disposition. 10. Rangiku is implied to be one of the stronger Vice Captains being able to defeat Kira in battle, and was shown to be a competent leader amongst the other Vice Captains. 11. Ikkaku is a strong Vice Captain being one of three who currently know their bankai. But is completely combat focused. 12. Akon was shown to be a competent leader amongst the scientists and took on many of the Vice Captain’s duties as a third seat. 13. Rukia alongside Shuhei and Renji is one of the strongest Vice Captains being well rounded in combat, leadership and support. she defeated an espada masquerading as her former superior and an enemy who defeated her brother.

I am very glad you ranked Matsumoto above Kira, although they are similar in skill she is definitely a bit stronger IMO. Had quite a few arguments where people try to say that she isn't very strong and bring up her losing the fight vs the three arrancar, even though it was three on one. So many people were trying to argue that Kira outclasses her which makes zero sense in my mind, not only is she a lot more confident in her won skill, but she beat him head to head on a couple of occasions. Let's also not forget that her own captain Hitsugaya places a lot of faith in her, coming from him that means quite a bit! My only other issue with this list is not placing Ikkaku at the top, if you are going by pure strength head to head or on the battlefield, none of the characters can match him, I really don't think it is close. I mean there is even a scene where Renji asks Ikkaku to train him in order to master his bankai. When they sparred Ikkaku never lost and always seemed to win rather handedly. When they were finished training Renji mentions Ikkakus bankai specifically and admits that he has the strength to be a captain in his current state and basically admits that in comparison to himself Ikaku is on a totally different level. Not sure if you will ever see this, but would really like to get a response as to why Ikkaku is not number one, or at least ahead of Renji who he one hundred percent beats when it comes to head to head power.

The ranking is at what they Lieutenants level at TYBW arc. At that point Ikkaku's bankai is broken while Renji went up and mastered his Bankai that puts him above a lot of the current captains.

Much respect for Ikkaku, I'm glad to see he ranked this high. I was disappointed that Ikkaku was literally the *only* other character that suffered the consequence of having his bankai broken in the series. Ichigo obviously just gets his own fixed, so why not Ikkaku as well? Its a different story if Ikkaku was one of a handful. Having a broken bankai however, is still an interesting concept, he didn't need to get it fixed but it would have been nice to see how Ikkaku would have adapted to his circumstance.

During SS arc he is still not captain level. At Aizen arc he somewhat close, and after the time skip, yeah, he is totally captain level. That's what so great about Renji, like he said in the video. He is the perfect number 2- both in mindset and raw power.

Like they officially offered renji a capatin position when a position is open after the Aizen arc. If he accepted it he would be already a captain. Just look at Tetsuzaimon he is probably the weakest capatin by far but he is still a captain. Like a lieutenant's strenth may vary but most is still on the same category of rei grade in the grand scheme of things if they don't have a bankai yet. If you are a candidate you already meet the minimum required to be a captain thus you are already captain level. Also after the training at 0 squad renji is already way stronger than most of the Captains, like he would be stronger than byakuya if Byakuya did not have training in the 0 squad too.

Sure, ikkaku and renji have met the requirement of being a captain but they weren't captain level. As in, power, skill, expertise, etc. There was nothing about renji that actually gave you the impression he was captain level until he ACTUALLY got to that level. Renji doesn't ACTUALLY become captain level until the fullbring arc.

Tommo do you think you could make a video on top 5 candidates for possible Head Captain after Kyoraku. So Byakuya, Toshiro, Shinji maybe even Kisuke(If he chose to come back to the soul society), how you believe they would fare and perhaps how they could develop their Bankai as well as other key abilities. Also I just wanted to add on Momo, Hisagi and Kira. Momo should likely have more focus on mental fortitude after the timeskip similar to Toshiro and how he wanted to become level-headed and create a real bankai. As for Shuhei, you said his strength was his ideals as a soul reaper but in CFYOW this changes. Despite making threats to kill Aura and other characters initially, he now wants to avoid killing if necessary and he did not seem to gain offensive abilities for Kazeshini, merely defensive ones. His abilities prevent his opponent killing him in shikai based on his remaining reiatsu and his bankai keeps him and his opponent alive indefinitely until they both collectively run out. Kira could be 3 or probably number 2 when he is revived by Mayuri as he has been fused with multiple shinigami souls that increase his powers to that of a captain, to the point that he was able to take down Shaz Domino, a sternritter with relative ease. Later on, when he is completely restored, if he keeps those souls he could even rival Renji if he acquired a Bankai.

For what it's worth, Kira practically has his own filler arc (Amagai arc), showing more of his skills with his shikai. Wouldn't change the ranking but it's fun to note. I also feel like Rangiku should get bankai. She may not be captain level, nor have the exact work ethic for it that status, but I think she tends to enter states of personal reflection and consistently performs well against tough opponents that I think she deserves one. Finally, just so we're clear on how tough Hisagi is, it took Yumichika (a vice-captain level fighter) unleashing his true shikai to beat Hisagi using only his fists at the time. Ikkaku got destroyed by a non-released (but granted, very powerful) fraccion despite using shikai while Hisagi wipes the floor with his opponent, and his shikai gets more broken as the story goes on, to say nothing of his bankai.

Because, it is obvious Mashiro is far more powerful than her as she was essentially a Vice Captain under Kensei back in the Pendulum and got her former post reinstated. But I agreed with your decision to put Rangiku above Mashiro because her mental readiness for battle where Mashiro is clearly theatrical.

Rangiku is one the oldest Vice-Captain, most of the Vice-Captains currently in place weren't there when Isshin was Captain of the 10th Division, aside of Iba and maybe Omaeda. Lisa, Mashiro and Hiyori are definitely above her, even without Masks.

Supposedly Byakuya is next in line to be Head Captain after Shunsui & it is likely that Renji will become the Captain of Squad 6 at that point. For some reason I see Kensei as most likely to die during the new arc & suspect Shunsui's time as Head Captain to be incredibly short compared to Yammamoto. You have to wonder how likely it is for a Captain to be promoted to 0 Squad?

I really enjoyed your list and the reasoning behind it. :D It is really nice to see some appreciation for Renji. I always thought of him as an interesting character and seeing his growth throughout the series. I think that Byakuya and Renji's relationship is so interesting seeing the changes and the trust built between them. I feel like Renji is staying as vice-captain is somewhat through loyalty. But, I think that Renji and Byakuya have developed this bond with one another. I think the series ending with Renji as Byakuya's vice-captain is fitting even though people know he is more than capable of becoming a captain. I just wished we were able to see more of the relationship dynamic between the two but it's understandable being with the time etc

I thougt Renji is the Lieutenant of 13th company by the end of Bleach. You can see him standing next to the door when Rukia enters during the ceremony, since all Lieutenants stand behind their capitains. What are your thoughts?

I thought he was just there as support for his wife . Renji did not want to leave the 6th and if he had it would be for the 7th or the 8th who had noone

I almost wonder what the fights would have looked like if Ichigo fought a different vice captain instead of Renji in the SS Arc. Like how would the battles play out if he fought like Momo, Rangiku or Hisagi? I feel like Izuru and Hisagi would have won those battles to be honest. Probably Rangiku too.

Beating Ikkaku is already a great feat though since Ikkaku is definitely one who has high mastery of swordskill, especially against a shinigami who don't have Hierro like arrancar or blut vene. Ikkaku's shikai techniques are lethal if you don't have any abilities that make your skin impervious.

Yep ichigo was very lucky . He fought ikkaku who did not use bankai in seireitei. Then renji who has no hax unlike rangiku or kira and did not use kido . Then very lucky to battle kenpachi, the only captain he could defeat with just shikai and finally byakuya who was conflicted and who ichigo could fight at full strenght ( he would have got stomped by the stronger captains , those with hax and would have been holding off vs soifon and hitsugaya and lost )

There's a big difference between strength and worthiness. For worthiness, I would rank Nanao a lot higher. She's not particularly strong, but she's very good at administration and realistically that's probably most of a lieutenant's job. Especially during peacetime. By that metric Renji, Rangiku, and Ikkaku would all drop way down the list. However, for the former two, their division really doesn't need more administrators: Byakuya probably does most of his division's paperwork and we already know Toshiro does his. I'm still trying to figure out why squad 11 doesn't just fall apart. Maybe Yumichika does it in secret or something. Overall, a lot of the Captain-Lieutenant pairs function better as a unit. For Nanao particularly, she's Shunsui's wrangler. So, in that sense she's probably the only reason her division gets anything done at all.

Question! I know her younger version at the end of the manga isnt technically a vice captain anymore, but where would you have put Nemu on this list had she 'survived'? I feel like she had a good showing in the final arc, especially compared to most vice captains!

I'm curious as to what her powerscaling is compared to the other Vice-Captains. Her fight with Pernida wasn't her actual ability as (IIRC) she was burning her lifeforce to become so strong, pushing her body beyond it's limits. It was like when Might Guy used the 8th gate in Naruto.

Great list but in my opinion Akon should be above Momo and switch Ikaku and Kira (And Kubo confirmed that Kira has a bankai even though we don't see it in the manga I think It should be somehow considered)

I feel like Hanataro Yamata would have made a great vice captain (Lieutenant) for the fourth division. I don't get why Kubo would make Hisane's sister vice captain😢

Kiyone was so loyal to Ukitake... Maybe she felt that she had nothing to do in the 13th division when he died ? And I agree Hanataro is so underrated.
