Ranking the Hoenn Gym Leaders Weakest to Strongest

So a few times now I’ve gone and ranked all of the Gym Leaders from certain games like Red and Blue and the Johto series, so I figured I would revisit the concept once more today and tackle the gym leaders from Hoenn in Ruby and Sapphire. Usually with gym leaders there is this idea that they get progressively more difficult as you move through your gym challenge, but that really is not always the case. I’m taking a few things into consideration when I rank these leaders such as the Pokemon you’ll be up against vs the selection of Pokemon you have available to you at that point in the game, as well as the moves available to you vs the moves on their Pokemon. Even if a gym leader has Pokemon over level 40, that doesn’t exactly mean they’re harder to beat than an early game gym leader with a level 14 that might just be pretty tough for that part of the game. Let’s get right into things and see just what kind of challenge Hoenn has for us.

@@edmg7 xatu always sets a couple of calm minds, claydol is really bulky, lunatone screens cut by half the damage and solrock can use sunny day. So, spamming surf might not be the best option to deal with Tate and Liza

edmg7 He literally just mentioned that Lunatone keeps putting up Light Screens, which, despite the advantage, makes your special moves like Surf do fuck-all regardless. It doesn’t help that Claydol destroys your Rock/Electric type that’s supposed to deal with Xatu with Earthquake + is inherently bulky, Xatu may as well be in the competitive side of things with it spamming Calm Mind, Lunatone setting up screens making special attacks hit as hard as a Pidgey to a Rock-type, and Solrock sets up Sunny Day, weakening your Water-type attacks and allowing it to destroy your Water-types with Solar Beam.

Which is really not what you want to do against tate & liza because before you know it they've boosted their defenses to ungodly amounts and they'll sweep whatever is left of you team. idk what it is about double battles in pokemon, they always trip me up. the ace trainers before veilstone in diamond/pearl, the ones with the gyarados.... unbeatable. and raihan in swsh was pretty difficult too, especially considering the rest of the game was easy as piss

Morty suffers from the fact that there was only Misdreavus & Gastly Family back in the days of Gen 2 for Ghost Types so he shouldn't count. Half of Wattson's Team in Emerald is native to Hoenn as he uses Electrike & his ace is Manectric. As for Fawkner, I guess they thought the familiarity of Pidgey & Pidgeotto would be good for players just starting out. Still they could have had him start with Natu then use that level 15 Pidgeotto. As for Bugsy it was probably considered too soon in the game to have the player encounter Scizor, although it would have been interesting if his team was Spinarak, Beedrill, & Ledian instead. Chuck had no excuse not to use either Hitmontop or Heracross on his team.

I found a good strategy for it use a Gardevoir with skil swap after you kill the Xatu skill swap the solrock and Claydol with earthquake you are immune to it and Solrock is weak to it

Yeah Flannery leads with a Slugma which is ridiculously easy to set up x attacks/boosting moves with to sweep through. I usually use Mudkip so its kind of a joke. Wynette is much harder unless especially cuz of Altaria being neutral to electric and packing dragon dance

It's really crazy just how much they amped up the gyms for Emerald and honestly I think it improves the experience because you have to be legitimately prepared for every single gym and it clears up some of the glaring weaknesses that some of the leaders had before

Honestly Emerald is my favourite 3rd game. Don't like Crystal cuz you can't get Ampharos. I don't like Platinum because you can't get Murkrow until late game. And yellow is a close second.

Can't say I agree with most of these choices for three reasons. 1. Simply having a balanced team (not even an intrinsically researched one, just a good variety) gives you coverage against most of the powerful moves and annoying stats. 2. If you have tanky Pokémon on your team that really changes how you battle against some of these leaders. Most of what you said only applies if you have a team of sweepers. 3. If you take the AI into account, some of the leaders with impressive moves become a lot more tame.

1:15 - You're completely wrong in saying you can get every other badge before you fight Brawly. You can initially skip Brawly and fight Watson and Flannery first, but you have to fight him before you can fight Norman. Norman will only let you challenge his gym when you've got 4 badges, i.e. when you've beaten Roxanne, Brawly, Wattson and Flannery. You can't bypass Norman because you need the Balance Badge to be allowed to use Surf outside of battle, and you need to Surf to cross Route 118 so you can actually get to Fortree City and fight Winona.

Yeah, I remember the difficulty spike I'm some of my early casual playthroughs. Thanks to multiple copies of RSEORAS games, I was able to build a better team with Pokemon I don't use as often but still to greater effect and it wasn't AS bad, given the boosted EXP the Traded Pokemon get. Sadly, I had played Emerald, which means they actually had more pokemon. Tbh, fighting Manectric was somewhat hell. Not to mention, Tate and Liza was given Claydol and Xatu, which somewhat makes it more difficult. Luckily, I did have a Manectric on my own, two water types, as well as a Mightyena to counter their Psychic type. And norman is given a Spinda with Teeter Dance, which was darn annoying.

Focus Punch is an awful move for ingame trainer battles usually as they unless programmed otherwise will usually just attack. While if you encounter an opponent who uses a Pokemon that uses it you can just attack them to prevent them from using it. Just imagine how scary Slaking would be in Double Battles if Skill Swap was used to give it Huge Power.

What I remember most playing omega ruby is my Torkoal of all Pokémon swept Stevens team and Steven is suppose to be one of the hardest champions. You might think my torkoal was over leveled, nope she (I had a female torkoal) was level 51 and Stevens pokemon was level 53 I think. My torkoal tanked through Stevens Mega Metagross’s giga impact and two shotted it. I will never forget my beloved Torkoal

I also used some withdrawal and I pulled this off because I knew Steven was going to start off with Skarmory and use spikes so it was a free withdrawal

I used a Male Torkoal on my original Emerald playthrough back in 2005 and it was sensational absolutely destroyed Glacia with it in the Elite Four and it helped me defeated Tate & Liza.

About Norman, you can get any pokemon with Protect/Detect to cheese out the Slakings. PP is an issue that comes to mind, but if your pokemon hits decently hard, you won't have to worry about it (at least for Protect).

A pokemon you missed Mystic is Zangoose (if you have pokemon Ruby). It learns Swords Dance and Slash by level up, which makes for a terrifying combo in a play through. It's also decently fast and can take enough hits to get a boost or two. Later on you can also give it a combination of Aerial Ace, Shadow Ball and Brick Break to make it even more devastating (recommend the last two tbh). It does really well against basically all Gym leaders. With a double Swords Dance boost I've found that you can even power through Winona's Skarmory. With Shadow Ball you annihilate Tate and Liza and Swords Dance + Return or Slash devastates Wallace as well. Only thing you've really gotta watch out for are faster pokemon who can kill it before it sets up or prey on less-than-high health.

My trick in fighting Winona in the past is that before i challenge her, i will go straight to the abandoned ship and get myself TM 13 which is Ice Beam and use it on Swampert. With that, i'd have an easier time defeating her Altaria since it's 4x effective against it.

Roxanne's my Hoenn Gymleader Waifu, although Flannery was also really hot looking back in the days of Gen 3. Can we agree that Hoenn has the most attractive female gym leaders of any region we've gotten so far? Not only that there's also Emerald's Frontier Brain Girls Anabel, Greta, & Pike Queen Lucy. Also May's RS & Emerald appearances were attractive as well. I think my biggest regrets for ORAS are as follows 2)Battle Frontier was completely absent, 1)Giving May a childish looking redesign without any Trainer Customization options. Supposedly the reason Battle Frontier wasn't included was because it was believed not enough players would enjoy it because of it being too difficult. If that were the case they could have just made the challenges easier. At least Anabel appeared in an awesome new redesign for the Gen 7 games.

Um, for Watson, I think you have access to Geodude, which at Level 16 learns Magnitude, and is immune to his electric attacks. That's usually how I deal with him if I don't pick Mudkip as my starter.

This is my opinion but based on Emerald, from easiest to hardest. Roxanne Ex: You can simply catch Shroomish, Lotad or have Treecko/Mudkip as your starter. You can aslo overlevel Torchic to evolve and use double kick Wattson Ex: Marshtomp destroys it with Mud Shot. Or have Geodude with Magnitude learned at level 17. Combusken has double kick, we mentioned Marhstomp, Grovyle does struggle though. But as I meantioned, you can also beat it with Geodude. Norman Ex: Now I know what you are thinking, how can he be easier than everybody else. Three words, Sableye and Poison/Burn/Leech Seed. You can use this statuses to chip him down and switch ro Sableye, the earliest ghost type to be dealt 0 damage and chip both down. Yes, one unit may die from facade, but when you switch out, you can revive them since you have passed by Flannery where you can buy revival herbs. Juan(The replacement of Wallace in Emerald): By now you should have a solid team and there are many counters: Manetirc being the best, Magneton, Ludicolo quad resisting water, and anybody like Crobat who has Giga Drain. But he has high levelex pokemon which is why I think he is harder than norman anyways. Also Norman gets countered by Protect in the first turn. Brawly Ex: Surpriing but while Tailow can be a counter, you can get surprised by the higher levels of his pokemon if you decide to fight him at the moment. I actuallyhad two pokemon die to him which says a lot for the point in time in the game. He even used a non very effective attack to kill my Ralts. Flannery: She actually has a Camerupt and Numel instead for having the extra slugma. Torkoal alone is a challenge due to how attract and a sunny day Overheat can easily kill. It's also very bulky so it can survive many hits and just restore the Hp easily. Also, you can compare it with Miltank except as the child of Miltank that Whitney has with attract. Winona Ex: The first time I whited out in The game. Once Altaria has set up plenty of Dragon Dances, she can sweep your team if you haven't teached anybody Ice beam but she is much higher leveled at the time. Also you can't just use double team or something since she has aerial ace. I barely beated her by chipping her down with toxic on Crobat and healing. But just like Mystic has said, unless you are ready, the fight is very hard. Tate and Liza Ex: If you have played Emrald you know you just can't spam surf on Swampert or something when they have a well set up team with sunny day and solarbeam, flamethrower and the bug type as we know sucks and is weak to rock at the times. Dark types have low speacial defense and unless you had an overlevel ed Bannete or Dusclops, the battle is very hard. Also, everybodyy is iimmune to Earthquake and they have four pokemon. This for anybody if tthey want to know about Emerald. Thank you for reading.

A little recomendation for norman's battle. Pelipper learns protect at a very early level and it is probablly the best counter there is to his entire team if you don't have any fighting types

My favourite region, Hoenn instantly took the top spot and has held onto it all these years! I prefer the storyline in which Wallace becomes Champion because Steven prepares to die in the final battle against Team Magma and Aqua. But I can easily see Mystic's point of view of Wallace being able to become Champion because of his awesome team

I used my starter only in Emerald so I overleveled my Sceptile relatively quickly and got through all the gyms with ease

You could also have a Geodude (which learns Magnitude at level 16 and could hold a Soft Sand, obtained on route 109's beach) by the time you face off against Wattson If I didn't have a Marshtomp, that was always a go-to for me

I just got Torchic, evolved to Combusken while keeping peck. Pretty much ran through the first 3 badges, had to use something else for Flannery but then Combusken or Blaziken wrecked Norman.

I found the flying type leader very easy, but that was mainly due to incredible paralysis luck from my manetrics (spelling might be wrong) spark on the altaria. I also found the fire type leader easy because I had a gardevoir that was level 30 and the normal type was extremely easy because the last slaking kept using focus punch, nothing else and the fact my gardevoir was extremely strong. The hardest for me was easily The electric type because I was very underlevelled and didn’t want to grind

Honestly, I feel like game freak should put a dragon trainer for the first gym since it feels like a waste that the big dragon trainers are in the last few gyms or elite 4. The first gym is so easy since there is always a grass or water type to use or just a coverage Pokemon in general.

My first playthrough on Ruby though, Brawly was some tough BS. I tried to have Ralts spam Confusion, but it wasn't enough! I had to find a Makuhita and hopefully beat him, because Arm Thrust was BS. To me at least. I maybe should've caught a Tailow...

One simple way to counter Norman’s Slakings is to bring one of your Pokémon knowing the move Protect and using it whenever Slaking is about to use a move. Unfortunately, the TM for it, 17, is not available until you reach the Lilycove Department Store; so you will have to rely on Pokémon that learn the move naturally. Dustox learns it at level 17, Pelipper at 25, Volbeat at 29, Torkoal at 27, and Anorith at 31

Norman's Slakings were hell to beat. Even when using fighting type moves against them. They withstand so much damage. Wallace's Milotic was annoying too.

After I fought flannery and nearly lost to her, I got stuck in the game for a while because I wasn't sure what to do, so when I finally realized I needed to battle norman most of my team was about level 40, so I was a god for the next two gym battles.

For Watson and you started with Treeko, make sure to get a Makuhita and evolve it into Hariyama. Evolves at level 24 and is one thick boy.

For the twins, grass type Pokemon or dark type Pokemon or moves will also be just as good... so 2/3 starters are good against it, and even without a grass or water, a dark, steel, ghost or bug type would also work well against it...
