I did some more research. Turns out the childhood friend was called "Sabra" Here's an excerpt from the interview: "When it came to naming Sabrina I decided to name her after a woman I recalled from my junior high school days ... who was very active in school affairs, and who assigned a number of us to interview prominent people in the media. In addition, the woman's name had a New England ring to it. Some years later I recalled the woman's name was not Sabrina, but actually Sabra Holbrook."

Fun fact:Claire's name in japanese is Ibuki,that can be roughly translated to breath. When she gives the player the TM for dragonbreath,she says "No,this has nothing to do with my breath" though,this was changed in HG/SS and so as the TM given out,but she still makes a small reference to it before being embarassed. Their names are Dent, Pod, and Corn, which are all types of corn, continuing the plant names, however, if you put the prefix tri on each one, they become a seperate word, Trident, Tripod, and Tricorn (a type of hat) which is because tri means three and they're a set of three gym leaders.

tl;dr: Well yes, but actually no. It's not nearly as simple as that. Rome had a distinct mythology of its own long before they syncretized their religion with that of the Greeks. They had a habit of doing this thing where when they conquered a region and saw similarities between the Roman gods and local gods, they would sort of synthesize them together. It's why Mercury (the god as well as the planet) isn't just associated with trade and travel, but also with knowledge, craftsmanship, and creativity; traits he picked up when the Romans synthesized him with the Celtic/Germanic sun god Lugh (or about a hundred other names if you want to dive into that; I don't) and with Odin, of all gods. Venus is an especially interesting case, as she seems to have occupied more of a mother/nature goddess role before syncretism with Aphrodite from Greek religion seems to have somewhat overshadowed that. Aphrodite herself wasn't native to Greece, but it seems she was sort of transmitted to Cypress from the Phoenician traders who worshiped a goddess of love and war known as Astarte, who in turn is descended from Inanna, the Babylonian goddess of love, war, political power, and various crafts who they called "The Queen of Heaven and Earth." This happened a lot in the ancient world. You would get a pseudo-state religion with a pantheon that could be expressed myriad different ways in local folk religions until you got a thousand different versions of what can seem at first blush to just be half-a-dozen, maybe a dozen deities. Additionally, when two cultures wanted to ally with each other, and saw similarities between one god or goddess and another, they would syncretize their religions as a way of burying the spiritual hatchet. I love all the work that was put into these names, and the work you put into decoding them! I've been working on a small Pokemon project myself, mostly just for fun, and I have the Gym leaders all worked out, although their names don't have as much thought put into them. I also have some Gym puzzles, although a lot of them feel fairly similar of "Push thing to place to make thing happen" First is Simona, the Normal gym leader. Her name comes from Simple, another word for Normal. I typically see Normal as a stand in for Change or Potential, seeing as Pokemon like Porygon can change their type. She runs the local Trainer's school, and is often the first challenge Trainers face. Her gym consists of answering questions about battles, like how Held items work, and then you have to do a battle against a trainer showing that idea off, like their Pokemon holding a berry. She gives the Knowledge badge. Second is Amy, or Amythest, the Rock leader. Her name comes from the gem Amythest. She's similar to Roark in that she's a miner, although she mines for precious gems like her namesake. She's known for being fairly happy-go-lucky too! Her gym puzzle involves pushing minecarts along tracks to weight down platforms so that you can continue. Third, we have Rainer, the Water leader. His name comes from Rain, which is also his battle strategy. He's an older leader, known for being very traditional, and being an avid fisherman. He believes in stillness and patience, like fishing on a still lake. His gym puzzle involves rotating aqueducts to power waterwheels, opening gates. He gives the Tide badge. Fourth we have Delilah, the Grass leader. Her name comes from the flower Lilac, or from Lilly. She's the leader of the Pokemon rangers, and talks elegantly, or uses "Flowery" language. I'm not sure of her puzzle yet, but I'm thinking rolling large logs to make paths. She also gives the Grotto badge. Fifth is Ace, the Flying leader, coming from the term for a talented Airplane Pilot, Ace, although he isn't a pilot. Instead he's an Acrobat who constantly wears a wingsuit, and is known for being quite over the top. His gym is basically a vertical wind tunnel, with a fan at the bottom that you can turn off and on with switches to rise to the next floor or slowly fall down, so you can navigate the floors. He gives the Horizon badge. Sixth is Nina, the Dark leader. Her name comes from Ninja, as she is one, and I always thought Dark was more fitting for a Ninja than Poison, as Ninjas are known for moving through the shadows. Her gym is a trick Ninja dojo, requiring you to find sliding or rotating panels in the walls to continue. She gives the Shade badge. Seventh is Bruce, the Fighting leader, coming from Brute, or even the fighter Bruce Lee, although he's more MMA. His gym challenge is simple, it's a gauntlet of trainers, similar to Norman's, allowing you to choose various challenges, but there's a Caviat, you can't heal between fights until you get to Bruce himself (So you can prepare for the final battle against him). No tricks, no gimmicks, just an endurance test. Finally, Friseur the Ice leader, coming from the word Freeze. He's a cold-hearted and callous mountaineer who grew up in the icy heights. He's so disinterested he has his back turned to you the entire fight! His gym puzzle is navigating icy one-way slopes to climb a massive mountain, similar to other ice puzzles. Upon defeat, he (Begrudingly) gives you the Frost badge.

Wulfric's name, specifically the "wulf" part could be in reference to the wolf of nordic mythology fenrir and is seen as a symbol of strength and stamina, which you kinda need to endure the cold. I think Piers’ name works as a reference to Peter in other ways too! In the game he actually helps you out a lot more than you might expect from a punk, especially near the end (I won’t give specifics due to spoilers). He also holds quite firmly to his beliefs, much like Peter. He’s the only gym leader in Galar that refuses to dynamax his pokemon, even when he has the opportunity to, because he believes in being strong without having to rely on that. Also, it works with Marnie since, as you pointed out, their town is close to the sea. So, it’s like a pier you would find on the shore.

An interesting fact that he brought up about them is that their names put together make the word levitate. I find this to be quite interesting because their Pokemon that they use, Lunatone and Solrock, have this ability and are immune to ground type moves; taking this a step further, in emerald, they add a Claydol (which also has this ability) and Xatu (which is part flying type, and therefore also immune to ground) to their team as well.

Piers name could also be in reference to his character. He's trying to get people to see dark type Pokemon in a more positive light, and is also trying his best to be there for and support his little sister Marnie, even if his methods were a little skewed. He's also the only person, other than Hop, who comes to your aid in the post game when Sordward and Sheilbert start committing acts of terrorism. So in a sense, he is in fact the best good. Also a "pier" is another way of saying "dock", and Spikemuth is right on the water.
