From Russia with love is a contender for my favourite Bond movie. So many things I love about it however, it is obviously quite slow paced with minimal action so I completely understand people finding it dull. Quantum of solace is unwatchable to me. I have noticed an increase in love for this film and that's great but I have seen it twice now and it does nothing for me. Whilst I do like Casino Royale and understand people putting it at their number one, it's not a film I gravitate towards whenever I want to watch a movie. It is great though. My guilty pleasure is Diamonds are forever. I understand why so many hate it and my love for it is mostly based on the pure nostalgia of it being the first one I ever saw.

Interesting takes. I'm with you on No Time to Die, what a great movie to bow out with for Craig! (the best 007 for my money) I also share your hate for Moonraker, an awful cash-grab that has aged very poorly. But man, From Russia With Love is a great Bond film! The pacing is slower than usual but I love the atmosphere and the amazing villains, and Connery is at his best. Anyways, respect your choices.

It’s good to see a non American/Canadian ranking the series. It’s odd that you seem to not have seen the movies that many times. As an older fan in Britain I would have expected you to mention seeing Moore and Connery movies often as a kid. My ratings 7 - top class absolute favorites- go to films with so much I enjoy. 6 - special ones which maybe have a minor quibble or two 5 - definitely entertaining but have a major negative which is overcome by the overall experience 4 - generally above average experience vs other movies 3 - flawed but watchable 2 - touch and go. Only will watch for a marathon 1 - will not watch again. Fortunately nothing here 26. DAD - 2 of 007 25. Spectre - 3 24. NSNA - 3 23. NTTD - 3 22. TMWTGG - 3 21. AVTAK - 3 20. QOS - 4 19. TND - 4 18. I am not a particularly dedicated Bond fan - I like the films well enough and have seen most of them at least twice - but still seem to consume a bafflingly large number of rankings videos. The only universals I've observed are the placing of Never Say Never Again at, or near to, the bottom, the 2006 Casino Royale as everyone's favourite and, until I saw this offering, the Craig duo of Quantum and Solace and Spectre as reliable mid-20s material. That you have them in your top 10 can only be tribute to your liking for Craig as Bond which shows that you have a great deal more tolerance for his insufferable ego than I do. Spectre I don't have any strong view about one way or another; but I do remember that Quantum of Solace was the only one I saw and thought immediately was the most awful trash and vowed never see ever again.

Connery was dating both Lana Wood (Plenty O’Toole) well reported during Diamonds and St John! The two Bond ladies have a feud even now over sister Natalie Wood’s death with St John still married to Robert Wagner. That’s Hollywood! I also read that St John dated George Lazenby too which makes her one of the most accomplished Bond girls off screen!!

You know something funny. I was introduced to Bond very early in life, but I think was shown lesser ones so it turned me off the franchise for years. The first one I was shown was Diamonds are Forever I think around age 5 or 6. So yeah, kind've a dull one to begin I think from what people say(still haven't gone back to it). Then about 7 years later I was shown Live and Let Die. Not big into voodoo stuff either so another turn off. Strange how I was never shown any of the classics. So that put me off of it for years and years. Then last year I said I would give it one more chance. So I picked up Casino Royale and Goldeneye. Saw Casino Royale first, and to this day it's still my favorite to what I've seen so far. Goldeneye is good but just not as much for me. Love Sean Bean and the director quite a bit, but yeah. Picked up Skyfall pretty shortly after. And then decided I will eventually go through all the Bonds, but as it stands right now, Craig is looking to be the favorite. Just got back from No Time to Die, first time in theaters since 2019. And yeah, so so good. Might like it more than Skyfall if I'm honest, but need to see both again to be sure. As it stands, my second favorite bond and such a good send-off, and extremely relevant(though unitentional at the time it was written and made). Have a few gripes here and there but overall excellent film.

Goldfinger is not the best overall Bond film. But it is the most iconic and classic. It set a standard. I very rarely watch it, but I know what it means to the franchise and how it is an absolute classic. For me, I prefer From Russia With Love. To me that is true James Bond because of how much more believable and down to earth it is compared to all the others. In my opinion it is Connery at his absolute best. From Russia with love way at the back with dirge like Spectre and Quantum near the top? Yeah I think it’s safe to say we’ve got different standards for bond films. Goldfinger, On Her Majesty, From Russia with Love, Spy Who Loved Me, Casino Royale. Connery is in a different stratosphere than the others. Not linearly, but exponentially greater than the others. It would be like designating a Ferrari as second tier to a Lexus to rank his films under others. I simply can't pick a movie in my top Bond which doesn't include him. Second, part of the joy of Bond is the historical appreciation of the way things were in the sixties. The suits, the thin ties, the cars, the dress, the hotels and the music. So for me, even On Her Majesty's Secret Service is classier and more deserving to be in my top 5. Brosnan is my second favorite Bond, although I didn't like any of his movies. Spy Who Loved Me also makes my top 5 . And Casino Royale is number 6. . Best of the Sixties always come first. I find Craig and Dalton so lacking in humor, so brooding, depressed, and less attractive that I only make room for one Craig in the top six because the movie was strong (but depressing). Saying Craig or Dalton films is better than Connery is like saying a modern version of “It’s a Wonderful Life” is better than the original. Blasphemy. It’s not just the story and actor, it’s everything nostalgic and historical.

Fantastic ranking there, after 2 viewings of NTTD I have to say it beats Casino and Skyfall (just). Also great to see TWINE getting some love too- such an exceptional Bond film also. I would say that I think you can still be a big Bond fan and not like Goldfinger (shock), any time I have introduced Bond to people, this one seems to get ranked lower, but I do agree with you on Dr No- by far one of the best Connery films and definitely better than FRWL and GF :)

I appreciate all Bond fans and their ratings, but I might suggest that recency bias might be swaying your opinions a bit. Here are my ratings. A Films 1. The Spy who loved me- Moore at his finest, a great spy film with perfect pacing, just the right amount of comedy and Jaws. 2. From Russia With Love - Connery’s best film, probably the closest to an actual Fleming novel, beautifully paced, a true spy thriller film. 3. Skyfall - Sam Mendes purposefully tried to pull the franchise back from the disaster of QoS, he made the first real Bondian film of the Craig era. 4. No Time to Die - Great villain with an actual lair, modern plot, real stunt work without tons of CGI that have plagued several of Craig’s film. Again a Craig film that oozes Bond. 5. License to Kill - Dark, edgy, vindictive, and a great Bond girl. This is the revenge film that the franchise needed 6. Goldeneye - Iconic Bond with some of the greatest scenes, damn jump, tank chase, etc. Brosnan scores greatly. 7. A View to a Kill - Bond is old, who cares, and the film itself is a gem and has some real nail-biting moments (elevator scene, finale). If you forgive Moore’s age this becomes a quintessential Bond film that is loads of fun to watch. 8. Live and Let Die - Proved Moore could be Bond with a great change of pace, it was funny, fast moving, had a great song, Solitaire was a great Bond girl and the awesome stunts (alligator run, boat chase) B Films 9. Thunderball - Connery’s best acted film, the plot was awesome, stunning locales and the underwater fight scenes were incredible. 10. The world is Not Enough - A corrective to TND that brought back a more Connery-esque style film with spy craft, double crosses, etc. 11. Dr. No - If released today it would be considered a art house flick. Shows how real spy/espionage was done. 12. Die Another Day - The first half of this movie is the best Bond movie ever made, it then has the purposeful tonal shift into sci-fi territory that doesn’t work for everyone. FYI this movie was the highest grossing Bond film of its time and was generally well received. It’s only recently that people have started dumping on it. 13. Octopussy - Campy but still enjoyable, the actual plot is one of the best of Bonds. 14. For Your Eyes Only - I enjoy trying to figure out who is the real villain but it’s slower pacing brings this down into the B grade films. 15. Diamonds are Forever - Nails 1970 Las Vegas where the mob still controlled huge parts of it and how over the top Vegas actually was. The film also has the best dialogue of any Bond film making it fun to watch and Connery is back on his game, well rested and a twinkle in his eye again. 16. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service - Great story although it drags in the middle, awesome cinematography but unfortunately Lazenby’s acting drags it down to this position. 17. The Living Daylights - This has some great scenes but for some reason they don’t come together very well which is a shame. In this instance the parts were greater than the whole. 18. Goldfinger - The rape scene is terrible, it’s a poorly paced film and Bond actually doesn’t do very much in it. Yes there are some iconic lines and the villain and henchman are top notch but what I mentioned above and the all of the edits from actors working in the US to those on the English Soundstage drops it down to this position. C Films 19. Casino Royale - OMG how I wanted to love this film, it has some great scenes and then some very poor scenes that drops it into the C category. Bond invading an embassy would have gotten him fired PERIOD. Who unveils a new airliner at night? And why claim it’s Miami when it’s clearly a European airport with European airliners and cars in the scene? Vesper was way too young (23) to hold such a high position. The Arron Sorkin like dialogue between Bond and Vesper was a letdown. The sinking building in Venice was groan worthy fake, I could go on and on but people seem to ignore all of the faults in this film so they can agree with everyone else (authority bias). 20. Tomorrow Never Dies - A completely generic 1990 action film. It was well shot, acting was good but you could have Jean Claude Van Damme play Agent Brandon of the CIA and nothing would have changed. 21. You only live twice - I remember watching this as a kid on TV and thinking that this is the corniest Bond film ever and Connery seemed bored and irritated in it. They turned Bond Japanese, made a slow boring commercial about come visit Japan, the head of the Japanese secret service has a slide to get into his office, little Nellie was silly and a volcano lair, holy crap you have an Austin Powers movie. 22. The Man with the Golden Gun - The world’s best assassin uses a midget to lure other assassins to his circus fun house to kill them. Oh and something about a laser. Christopher Lee, Moore and Herb V. were great in it but the script/plot was not the best. D Films 23. Moonraker - A schizophrenic film, it has some of the darkest scenes of any Moore film (a lady is hunted down and killed by dogs) with some of the corniest/cheesiest parts. It’s part Noir Thriller mixed with a juvenile comedy (double taking pigeon). 24. Spectre - Slow, loaded with fake CGI scenes and of course it literally copied a parody film. Bond is now making a parody of a parody, this is a joke. F Films 25. Quantum of Solace - From the seizure inducing Frenetic editing to cover up the hundreds of goofs, to a boring villain with the lowest stake plot, to all of the fake CGI stunts and a hotel fight scene that was copied from Bourne (they had 2 unit directors from Bourne directing the action sequences.) This film is not a Bond film at all, it fails in quality, action, plot, villain and it copies almost everything from other movies.

I appreciate the wide differences of opinion that Bond fans have as well, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the complaints about Casino Royale, while praising No Time To Die. If CR has holes, NTTD has craters. I don't have Casino Royale as my 1 because other people say I should; it's there because I enjoy it the most. The tiny details you mention, to me, are frivolous, and if that's what ruins it for you, then I can't honestly see how you enjoy any of these movies. But again, though we disagree, I love the different opinions--what a great fanbase. Cheers.

Die Another Day may have killed the franchise and should be the bottom of the barrel. BUT Octopussy is just so bad in EVERY WAY…including the degrading name! Casino Royale was a great reboot, but is overrated: it’s a better action movie than Bond movie. The best one IMO is Goldfinger, and even though it might feel dated in a few ways, Connery is my favorite Bond. And even though for most of the franchise, the Bond girls had ridiculous names, they didn’t take Pussy Galore too seriously. Not every aspect has aged so well, but it deserves credit for giving the franchise all the staples. My favorites include Goldfinger, Goldeneye, Casino Royale, Skyfall, Dr. No, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

My list is constantly changing, here's mine as of right now (sorry I've basically written a book): 26. Never Say Never Again- Connery can't save this at all. Too cheesy even for Bond, all the familiar characters except Bond just seem like parodies. Even though it's inauthentic, it didn't have to *feel* inauthentic--but it does. Even more headscratching is this movie had a decent budget. 25. No Time To Die- It's the only Bond film I watch and I don't want to *be* Bond. For a guy who watches these for fun escapist fantasy, this movie does not deliver at all. Great cinematography and acting cannot save a bloated mess of a plot, not to mention the cheap copout ending. Bond dying is not a brave choice; it's the writers throwing in the towel and clearing house after writing themselves into a corner for four movies straight. Terrible villain with no clear motivation, unceremonious deaths of legacy characters, plotholes the size of a Great Lake... 24. On Her Majesty's Secret Service- An elegant restaurant, table with a wonderful view, 5 star service, accompanied by a hot date, all mean nothing if the main dish is awful. Likewise, if Bond sucks in an otherwise great movie, it's a bad Bond film. OHMSS needed a true leading man to pull it off, and Lazenby wasn't that guy. I'm not sure if I necessarily agree that it *should* have been Connery, but at least Sean would've been a marked improvement. 23. Diamonds Are Forever- This movie ran on a limited budget, with Connery demanding an exorbitant salary--and it shows. Way too kitschy, Las Vegas as the main locale for the movie is not nearly exotic enough. Really cheap feeling throughout, including keeping takes that should have absolutely been re-shot. The missle "explosion" effects were terrible even for 1971. 22. Live And Let Die- It's very obvious, more than any other actor's first Bond movie, that Moore hadn't figured out his Bond yet. It's an okay movie with a pretty good cast (the villains in particular), but I just find this movie falling short. Also largely set in the US, the locales just aren't Bond-level exotic. And Sheriff Pepper... ugh. An obvious cash-grab of the blaxploitation era. Moore's suits were on point, though. 21. A View To A Kill- my complaints are pretty much shared with most people--Roger Moore is waaaay too old in this movie. Tanya Roberts (RIP) is just not that good as a Bond girl, the SF Bay Area as a main locale is good for a Dirty Harry movie or Bullitt, but not Bond (I guess the theme is, Bond should largely stay out of the US...?). Walken and Grace Jones are good, but I do think Dalton should have taken over at this point. 20. The Man With The Golden Gun- Upon every rewatch, I like this movie a little bit more. It used to be my least favorite Moore Bond, but I actually downright enjoyed it last time I rewatched it. Yes, JW Pepper is in it again, not to mention that goddamn slide whistle during the car jump... definitely drags this movie down a lot. I like Christopher Lee as the main baddie. 19. Die Another Day- Everything from here on out I actively, thoroughly enjoy. That being said, this one ends up at the bottom of that list. Terrible CGI, yes, way too outlandish in almost every aspect. I don't like Halle Berry in this film, nor the main villain. Theme song sucks. But it's fun--I'd rather take a bad fun Bond film than a good un-fun Bond film. 18- Moonraker- Basically tried to reproduce The Spy Who Loved Me, to mixed results. Also very outlandish, trying to cash in on the recent Star Wars phenomenon (they did a lot of trend-following with the Moore films, it seems). Middling Bond girl, pretty creepy villain, pretty cool locations and good cinemtography, it's a plate-full of alright with a side of okay. 17. License To Kill- This one has fallen dramatically in recent years for me. I absolutely love Dalton, but the plot, cinematography, production, everything else makes it seem like a made-for-TV action movie. An objectively more interesting movie than Dalton's other go as Bond, but I'm frustrated by the wasted potential in this one. 16. The World Is Not Enough- This is my comfort-food Bond movie. Not necessarily the best, but I can pop it on, not pay too much attention to it, and be completely entertained. I love Sophie Marceau, I don't mind Denise Richards so much. Brosnan is awesome as always. Tear-jerking send-off for Llewelyn's Q. 15. Goldfinger- Hear me out: this is a very important Bond movie. It established the franchise in many ways, and is quintessential Bond. I just... I don't know, the last half is just a little boring to me. I love Gert Frobe as Goldfinger, the golf scene in particular is a lot of fun. 14. Octopussy- I know this is an incredibly high ranking for this movie, but I really enjoy it. The Bond girls are lovely, the villains are varied from subtle to outlandish, I like the locations. Teeters on the edge of the sillier side of Moore's Bond, but there are some dark spots in it as well. A very well-rounded Bond film. [Continued in comments]
@TimmyTantrum
@TimmyTantrum 2 жыл бұрын
13. Tomorrow Never Dies- More Brosnan comfort food for me. I was a '90s kid, and Brosnan was my Bond growing up. He's perfect in every Bond movie he's in (even if the movies themselves aren't). I agree with others that Paris Carver should have been Sylvia Trench instead. 12. Quantum Of Solace- Ranked way higher than I thought it would, it might be higher because I always watch this one right after Casino Royale as a two-fer. It's not as good on its own obviously, but I do agree it is very underrated. It's heavily inspired by the Bourne franchise clearly, but it's a quick punch of a movie. Maybe could have benefitted from a little more length, more breathing space. And toss those damn stylized location cards, worst part of the movie by far. 11. Thunderball- Yes, yes, the underwater scenes drag ass, there are too many characters... but it's beautifully shot, the lifestyle aspects are fun, gorgeous Bond girl, I'm always taken for a great ride when watching this one. One of Connery's best performances in the role. 10. Dr. No- This one used to be way lower for me. I used to think it was boring. But the last few rewatches, I really, thoroughly enjoyed the journey. It's basic, simple Bond--no, the tropes aren't all there yet, but because of that, there's a certain charm to it. Connery comes out of the gate cool as hell, proving he was built for this role. 9. The Spy Who Loved Me- Objectively Moore's best Bond film, though not my favorite of his. The ending is a little weak, but absolutely excellent overall. The main villain is a tad unmemorable, but Jaws is classic. Moore finally found his footing in the role. 8. Spectre- This one has fallen a bit for me, mostly due to No Time To Die. The plot of this never used to bother me much, until I realized how much it set the next film up for disaster. I maintain that serializing the Craig Bond films was a very poor choice--at least beyond Quantum of Solace. Even so, they could have ended the arc here, and let Craig bow out on a stand-alone adventure. An incredibly sexy film visually, fun lifestyle moments. Yes, a bit dumb, but if you let that ruin Bond films for you, you wouldn't be a fan. 7. You Only Live Twice- I don't care if Connery acts like he doesn't want to be there the whole time--I really like this one. One of my favorite things in movies are when there are romanticized portrayals of Far East locations. Aki is great, Kissy not so much, but still a great ensemble cast. The climax alone is worth the ranking. The cheesy, poorly aged moments are far outweighed by everything else for me. This actually was my favorite Connery Bond for a while. 6. For Your Eyes Only- Peak Moore, for me. Quite literally brought Bond back down to Earth, and back to being a darker Bond. Cool car, Gorgeous Bond girl, great cinematography, excellent villain-turned ally and ally-turned villain. Also, one of the best car chases in the franchise. It honestly, objectively, probably has no business being ranked so high, but I love it. 5. The Living Daylights- Again, I don't care if the plot or villains suck. Dalton is incredible in his first outing as Bond. Visually, this is one of the finest Bond films, great direction and cinematography. Great locations, I always enjoy this one. 4. Skyfall- A movie that brought Craig's Bond back to the heights of Casino Royale. This one is an excellent argument for why Craig's Bond shouldn't have been serialized. It works as a standalone movie, until it was retconned into the overall arc by subsequent movies. Fantastic visuals, competition for the best Bond Villain ever, great locations, bangin' theme song... this one really has it all. Could have done with a leading Bond girl, but I guess in a sense the Bond girl was M, so fair enough. 3. From Russia With Love- I don't find this one boring at all. Some of the best spycraft in all of the Bond movies, gorgeous Bond girl, Klebb and Red are brilliant villains, more lifestyle elements that I love, the train fight was awesome. I'm not very familiar with Hitchcock's work, so the apparent plagiarism doesn't bother me. A very procedural Bond film, which I love. 2. GoldenEye- I can throw this one on literally any time, and I'll be in the mood for it. Absolute pinnacle Brosnan Bond, right out of the gate for him. He looks the part, he acts the part, the role fits him like a glove. I can't say enough good things about this movie. I like Boris, adds a little bit of needed levity to a rather dark film. Famke Janssen is over the top (Onatopp?) in a good way, Natalia is a great Bond girl, Joe Don Baker returns in a much better role than he played in Living Daylights. I love this film. 1. Casino Royale- For me, it couldn't be any other movie at #1. The Bond film I've watched more than any other. A near perfect Bond girl in Eva Green, lifestyle moments galore, great action, pacing, acting, directing, cinematography, not one but TWO gorgeous Bond cars, a fantastic villain. This movie has absolutely everything you could want in a Bond film, and I say that knowing it's lacking a Q and a Moneypenny. I'm not sure any of the others can top this one for me, ever. This list might change tomorrow, but that's where I sit. I really, truly am entertained by any one of these from 26 to 1, even if I can find a lot of faults with some of them. Oh, and I haven't watched Casino Royale '67, nor do I plan to.

After Casino Royale (my favourite Bond film) I just didn't really like any of the new Craig films, perhaps it was the time or the fact that I stopped watching them in the theater, up to that point my childhood friend and I used to always go and watch the new Bond in the theater. So the last one I saw in the theater was Casino Royale and I had to leave after about 40-50 minutes, since I was sick at the time, it was still a great theater Bond experience. The worst deal in the franchise, I think, can be found in those Dalton's films and mainly because they seem to age really badly at least for me. For example when watching, License to Kill some time ago I had to admit that it was totally not what I remembered. Basically I thought I was looking at a bad episode from Miami Vice and I turned it off. One could of course argue that Moore had some really awful films/moments, Conner too, but he/they had some of the best ones too, so Moore is definitely higher on my ranking than Dalton, plus he is my childhood's Bond so there is the nostalgia factor which can't be denied. After Dalton Brosnan was a good choice to play Bond, but I think Craig was the right guy at the right time to helm the franchise - the proverbial Jackpot, if you will. With Craig's Bond, though, I still find that his Bond became a bit too generic or too "Jason Bourneish", which was not something I thought would happen based on Casino Royale. So excepting Casino Royale, his other films were more like games, where the generic NPC Bond had to clear the level, which was the film and even though, this could be considered the normal Bond formula, I think Craig was not at his best in those situations. With Connery and Moore in such generic game type of adventures, they could fill the screen with their charisma and carry whatever nonsense, but with Craig, I think he really shined in Casino Royale where he had a great character arc and had to step out of that superman/game character mode. So in a good Bond film I would take Craig's Bond, but in a more generic Bond film I'd rather watch Moore, Conner or even Brosnan, because they seemed to have more of that, " I can elevate a bad film just with my presence" quality to their Bond. Having said all of this I still like all the Bond actors even Lazenby - they all brought their own flavour to the character!

Call it what you want. I saw every Bond film multiple times as a kid. The first one I truly liked was Goldeneye. The first one I truly loved was Casino Royale. Calling it 'recency bias' just sounds like a cheap way of dismissing my opinion. It doesn't get to the heart of what it is about the more recent movies that works for me. Namely, the fact that we have an overarching story where Bond grows as a character over time through great story telling. You could just as easily call it 'story and character bias'.

My vote is for the next Bond movie to be directed by Sheldon Lettich starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Not sure why you go thru a long explanation of why or why not NSNA should or shouldn't be in a Bond ranking list just to immediately trash it because of the circumstances of its origin. Knowing there are several of the installments that are way worse in quality than that film pretty much told me your list was trash so stopped watching at that point. Curious what was the point of the inclusion in the 1st place!?!

Nice list. I agree with much of your list. I'd flip Skyfall and Casino Royale, but as you said, it's splitting hairs. I do not agree with No Time to Die though. The ending is unforgivable to me and it's just got a bit too much going on IMHO. I'd flip GoldenEye and The World also and I have The Spy in my top 10. But I liked virtually all of your points. And thank you for keeping it clean. Blessings.
