I think my favorite aspect of Franky's comedy has been lost to time. He had this one gag in Thriller Bark where he did spontaneous carpentry, like building a flight of steps on the fly or building a bridge. I always found that absolutely hilarious, and why Oda never kept that aspect of Franky's humor and instead changed it to tons of, "I am Franky-Robo! See my new weird features," I'll never know.

For my Berry, Ryunosuke climbing into Zou is one of the funniest things in all of One Piece. Any other series would have just gone, "Here are some planes or suction cups to get us to the top," but not OP. No, we get a poorly drawn dragon who isn't very good at the task he was created for, struggling to bring them all to the top in an extremely slow fashion. And by the time they are getting close, everyone is cheering him on as though he's become the main character of his own Shonen manga. Then at the top, everyone is confronted with the painfully ephemeral existence of Ryunosuke. Half of them, like Robin, have a semi-existential but tearfully bittersweet goodbye, while the other half, like Zoro, find the whole thing ridiculous and pointless. There's just so much unexpectedly unnecessary pathos and humor in this otherwise story-specific mechanism of getting them into the next arc that I can't help but adore how extra the whole sequence is.

Jinbe as the straight man is a pretty solid choice. I think one of his funniest moments, also Wano, was patiently waiting for the banquet while everyone else was off partying. Pure heart of gold Jinbe. I think a lot of Franky's humor really plays off Robin, and vice versa. Like, his shtick is probably mostly about him getting on her nerves, and her taking him down a peg, like Pirate Docking Six on Thriller Bark, and Chopper-Franky on Punk Hazard. Individually they may not be the best (though Robin deserves really high marks from her dark humor), but together they're almost always hilarious.

I actually don't think any of them would make good stand-up comedians. -Brook's...already trying, and that's more or less due to the shape of his personality. He's had decades of time as a skeleton to bone up. -Zoro is a little too serious for stand-up, but it's not like he can't say anything funny. I'm legit cut in half over the idea that his primary punchline is that he's late to the stage because he somehow ended up five blocks away from the venue and started trying to tell jokes wherever he thinks it is. -Luffy. Oh, god. Luffy would be more able to laugh at jokes than actually make them, but he *might* have some funny stories to tell. He definitely has some great ideas for being "funny", but that makes him more of a clown than an comedian. (Is this why him and Buggy butt heads so much?) -Usopp is a *bit higher* than Luffy, he's more able to tell jokes and funny stories and not simply bust up from trying. -Nami, Robin, and Chopper don't really have the mind or experiences for stand-up. Out of the three, though, Robin has the best chance. She's able to read people almost as easily as a book, and I'm sure that she'd be able to put a surprising amount of quiet practice in such a field. -Sanji has charisma, but I don't know how well he'd be able to function as a comedian. Most of what people know him for is being a cook and a strong fighter. Never know what he could be hiding! -Jimbei! With that uncle energy he's got, he's probably hiding a dictionary of dad jokes under his belt of Fishman Karate. His tone is almost perfect for gag delivery because he's taking some things more seriously than he needs to, which can make even mundane moments sound funny. It's a toss-up, I think, between Jimbei, Brook, and quite possibly Usopp for top stand-up among the Straw Hats. Sanji and Robin would be trailing in 4th and 5th, but it's hard to tell which would be better.

Usopp is canonically the best storyteller but would ruin the jokes by trying to make himself look better, Franky has a great personality for it and could do insane physical comedy and Brook knows how to work a crowd and has an entire dictionary worth of skeleton jokes. Nami would tell one joke and then demand money for the next one, Robin would say some out of pocket dark humor stuff and shock everyone except one guy laughing his ass off, Luffy wouldn't get out a single joke because he's laughing too much at his own ones, Sanji would just flirt, Zoro would end up on a concert stage telling jokes about cutting people, JInbei only has fishman dad-jokes and chopper doesn't know what a joke is.

Usopp will always be the winner for me, in any anime. Only because of the Perona scene where he just screams. "You can't make me negative! I already AM super negative!" And just... weaponized depression! The first time I saw that, I suffered from deep depression myself, I was already so invested in Usopp's journey as I really felt like his character managed to reflect what I was going through... and I laughed my ASS off. I was laughing so hard I actually cried. Here I was, deeply depressed, unable to do anything, and crying from laughter. A decade or more ago, I never forgot, Usopp is my hero. Thank you so much for not being a creator that focuses on power scaling and focuses more on the narrative, because like you said, I personally find Oda focusing on the characters, narrative, and comedy so much more entertaining to discuss. I think we need a “Post Time-Skip Straw Hats are Hilarious” video. Franky became ridiculous. Nami and Robin got inflated like Dig Dug attacked them-with Robin getting the added bonus of going from Nico Robin in the cowboy hat to generic. Brook became late stage Prince with an Afro. Zoro became Popeye. Luffy and Usopp got ripped. Sanji’s subtle twirls reversed. And chopper became an Ewok.

Jinbe is literally the Kazuma Kiryu of the crew. He's one of the most badass and strongest when it comes to fighting. He's a bit stoic but also is able to cut back and have some fun with the gang. He was an orphan himself who grew up and took care of other orphans. And he can really pull off that Hawaiian shirt look. If it existed in the universe, I could totally see Jinbe doing some Pocket Circuit racing.

3:16 i agree and i think you should make that happen. you can start with a strawhat open mic where each of them do like 5 minutes and it's moderated by buggy and you can do roast battles (don't do akainu vs ace though xD). Maybe this only seems like such a good idea because i'm as high as the golden bell, but one piece characters played by goofy doing stand up seems like a content gold mine

Im a lil disappointed the Robin gag from Punk Hazard didnt make the cut. Her telling Franky (in Chopper's body) to stop making faces or doing anything at all really, with such stone cold deathly seriousness, is one of the best gags in the series. Gets me every time

Zoro is the funniest to me because most of his humor is unintentional. The people around him are so insane that as a serious guy, his reactions to them are super funny and relatable in some ways. He also can be very funny on purpose. He also has a very sarcastic and dark sense of humor at times which can be a lot funnier than the goofiness of other characters. Zoro can be terrifying and hilarious at the same time which is unique. I really relate to zoro’s personality when dealing with annoying people. I love seeing the serious zoro get humbled by being put into absolutely ridiculous situations and he’s just there seething like he’s disappointed in himself for putting up with the absurdity of the one piece world. The zoro gets lost gag is probably the most perfect running gag I’ve ever seen in an anime. It absolutely never gets old. It makes it even funnier because zoro takes it so seriously when people tell him he’s going the wrong way. He also never learns to get better at directions after all this time. I’ve always said that to me, luffy is the funniest character in all of anime. Even though he’s a wild and crazy crackhead there’s sort of a sophistication to the way oda writes luffy as a comedic character. Small stuff like luffy singing that stupid song on skypeia, or when he put the zombie back in the ground. I think that luffy does a lot of moronic things as a joke on purpose because he just has a really strange and ridiculous sense of humor and life is just a big joke to him. It’s like luffy is just always laughing at himself. Luffy is genuinely a dumbass but I think he plays up his stupidity sometimes because he’s self aware enough to realize how funny it is. It’s almost like his sense of humor is a representation of what the audiences sense of humor is. That’s not even taking into account how insane luffy is and that’s the best part. He’s just so ridiculous I love it.

I am at 3:07 and I paused to say that I think Usopp is the most consistently funny character of One Piece because he does the work of both a straight-man reacting to jokes and also being the butt of many, many jokes. Nico is second because she appears to be the least likely to joke around, but when she does think/say something funny or cute, it's always a whiplash for me and it gets me real good!

I feel like Jimbe would absolutely KILL at stand-up, mostly because my uncle does stand-up up and he is very NOT funny during his regular day-to-day life. He saves it, writes it down, and that becomes his stand-up. Jimbe would fully use the straw hat shenanigans as his material, and he'd deliver it with the best straight face ever.
