In the early days Angel Witch were a four piece with an extra guitar player. I was there the night they became a 3 piece. A club just down the road from the old Marquee Angel Witch headlining the venue. About 20 mins into the set, a flash pot went off on the front of the stage as the guitarist leaned over and it nearly totally took him out. The gig was held up for a good while and post that night they were a three piece. I think that was 78 though, I'm going to have to plead a Rowley-Birkin on that one, as i was a teenage student and burning the candle from the middle out in those days. Ironically, Pete Gordelier was in the audience that night as well as me and Pete, Spencer Holman and I ended up working together in the early 90s.

Kevin Heybourn is one of the greatest songwriters of Metal. He has a special talent.. Even he has only 5 albums ( plus "Resurrection" which is a compilation) , he has created many TOP songs with great ART! He has two GREAT albums ( the First classic "ANGEL WITCH" that is the FLAG for NWOBHM and it is an insurmountable Album forever, and the " US ABOVE SO BELOW " which is the other GREAT album, and maybe the greatest COMEBACK in Metal history. As for " ANGEL OF LIGHT" is a Very good album. Screamin n bleadin and Frontal assult are good albums. I am waiting for their next album.. Kevin go oooooooooonnnnnnn!

Angel Witch sounded very good and that was before they recorded a new record with the reformed band.Kevin is a talented guy and very cool, nice guy too. 1.Angel Witch 2.Loser/Dr.Phibes single 3.Flight 19 EP 4.Screamin' 'N' Bleedin' 5.Frontal Assault

I think that “10 favorite NWOBHM albums” could start off a cool new top 10 variation. Shows that look at specific genres/eras as a whole. Top 10s of stuff like 80s thrash metal albums/songs, 70s prog albums/songs, 70s metal albums/songs, thrash guitarists, heavy metal vocalists, prog guitarists, prog keyboardists, prog instrumentals, etc.

Lucha Libertaria so yeah I just checked and he has done some, like he has some “favorite albums” shows, so maybe those have been covered, but I think the ones about musicians of a scene would be cool because he hasn’t technically done them. Like he’s done a top 50 guitarists show, but it’d be cool to see what his top ten thrash guitarists would be. He’s got a show about his favorite keyboardists, but I think it’d be cool to see what his favorite of a specific genre (like prog) are. Narrow the parameters down to a specific genre. But again, maybe he would consider these topics as already been done

True, but not as impressive as the debut of Angel Witch and forced in the same niche because of the name perhaps ? What's interesting, I think, is the fact that both bands/singers were into the occult and knew very well what they were singing about. Today it is easy to let Google loose on the topics of their songs, but back then you had to go the library and actually read a book to know who or what Baphomet was, who exactly The Divine Victim was or what Nadir was and why you'd be leaving it. Like: intelligent metal. Witchfynde's second album went a bit too poppy suddenly, but still great album.

You guys are all over the place. You started taking about Resurrection and changed to As Above, So Below. And then saying that the production is not good, but As Above So Below is easily the best produced AW album. Probably my favorite AW record. A close toss up between that and the first one. I would rank Angel of Light #3. I don't find the balance in the mix to be that good. Guitars sound buried at times. Also, i think the sings drag on a bit. The first record is great, but I think As Above, So Below is the heaviest. But you guys should have talked about Resurrection more. It's just demos, but great stuff nonetheless. Probably #4 for me. Anyway thanks for doing this.

@Martin Popoff . Regards, you've produced some incredible work. Absolutely wonderful - but you can't be right about everything, fair enough? 'Course liking albums is very subjective and we should all agree on that. However, I was there during the NWBHM and Iron Maiden was one of the albums that I really took to but I'd heard Angelwitch as well, on the Friday Night Rock Show ( a must listen then) and at Reading. I only really appreciated the 'Angelwitch' single - which was an anthem and should have done better as a single. For me, every track on Iron Maiden is a classic. Each track incredibly exciting, anthemic, poignant of the era, magical slow elements, progressive, a step forward from previous metal/hard rock, Di Annio's - great voice, the raging twin guitars. 'Angelwitch', for me, is no comparison - although a good album. Iron Maiden were so fresh and so new and everyone around me seemed to agree. Killers is also great but IMHO second to the first album in ranking - I don't feel all the tracks, as a collective, are as powerful as the first. Lastly, and this probably has something to do with our stances, I'm more of a prog fan than a 'heavy metal fan'. Rock on.

Fortunate to have been a ‘teen’ (with money!) in 1980 - and to have owned both ‘Iron Maiden’ and ‘Angel Witch’ debut releases on vinyl - along with the half decent ‘Head On’ album from Samson. Then in 1981 Legend released their self-titled debut and that, together with ‘Killers’, relegated the 1980 releases for a considerable time. Nice to see that the spirit of NWOBHM is still alive and well and that long standing bands, who have survived by releasing independently over the decades, are still around - both Soldier and Legend being notable examples. @@unchattytwit Remember owning Tank’s first vinyl release in 1982 - favourite track was always ‘Who Needs Love Songs’. Mr. P. (SoT) once described Tank as heavy metal for numbskulls in one of his earlier Questions & Answers shows so I guess he’s not a fan, though he appears to like Motorhead who appear similar in many ways. Black Axe, as you mentioned, showed promise but (despite a record contract and name change to Wolf) were short lived. I own their only album ‘Edge Of The World’ (1984) which is certainly more melodic than Tank. Unfortunately, the songwriting is not great and the album’s ‘underwhelming’. Found similar issues with another ‘forgotten’ NWOBHM band Alkatrazz (from Kent) - not to be confused with the more famous English-American band Alcatrazz. Great live band who released a promising first album ‘Youngblood’ (1981) but their second (and final) release ‘Radio 5’ (1982) was disappointingly ‘U.S. AOR’ rather than NWOBHM. @@arthurprice603 Top work Arthur. Can't see how the chorus of 'Angelwitch' is any less numbskull than ' I fell in love (with a stormtrooper)? In fact it's much more 'numbskull' with the chorus repeated 10's of times with a football chant effect. And Mr P rates the Angelwitch album greater than the first Maiden album! Oh well, it's all subjective of course - we can like what we bloody well like. Have you written anything on NWBHM if not, go for a book!. Yes, forgot that Black Axe changed to Wolf. Lot of listening to catch up on. I also liked TOPT and Saracen. But the NWBHM exciting edge and inventiveness sadly seemed to disappear pretty quickly to me anyway. As you say not commercial enough. I liked Twelfth Night in the same period and the classic 'Live at the Target' - that's how I wanted them to stay, forever. But no before you know it they've got a cranky singer, cut most of the instrumentals out and buffoned their hair. A disaster for music. Though then came neo -prog - Marillion, IQ, Solstice, Pendragon, etc which also pretty soon lost its majesty although they still produced excellent work after the initial frenzy.

It's probably that I've heard too much of it over the years, the clean vocals (Fates Warning), the familiar chord progressions, the dual guitar attack (Merciful Fate and King Diamond.) I'll take heat, but I'd rather listen to early W.A.S.P. for the fun factor than clean-vocal, proficient bands doing doom metal. Ghost would be the exception, but mostly from the standpoint of novelty. Celtic Frost To Mega Theron was the turning point--but that's just me.
