Being lucky enough to have been growing up in London just as the NWOBHM was building and peaking, I can confirm you are absolutely spot on when it comes to poor management being the #1 reason why this amazing band never made it. I can tell you their gigs were hard-core mayhem - even more so than those of another London band, Iron Maiden. I distinctly remember seeing Kevin’s Dad, sitting there at the merchandising table in his sports jacket, shirt and tie etc. Lovely guy, but bless him, clearly no experience of the music business. So whilst Smallwood took Maiden on to world domination, Angel Witch tragically slowly sank from sight. The loss of Kevin Riddles was another blow for whilst Heybourne was the centre of the band with his song-writing, vocals and guitar-playing, Riddles was a fantastic front-man in the live environment. Exhorting and leading the crowd both in between and within songs, he was at least the equal of Dianno and then Dickinson, his loss to the band was massively underrated. Unfortunately terrible management and advice seems to have continued to have plagued the band to this day with gigs (such as they) being poorly publicised, if at all. Yet despite everything, as someone lucky enough to have been there in London at the time, when I see or hear the term NWOBHM, the first band that ALWAYS comes into my head is Angel Witch!

Diamond Head suffered the same fate. Singer Sean Harris's Mother mismanaged them right into relative obscurity. She held out for nearly two years before signing the band to a major label for thier second album. By then the race had already started and Diamond Head were dug into a deep hole.

Wow! I can imagine how amazing that must have been! I was a 16 yr old in Texas when AW and Maiden released their debut LPs. I remembered them both from Metal for Muthas. My band covered that version of Wrathchild. To me, they were equally powerful bands at the front of the NWOBHM era. AW should have gathered as much notoriety worldwide as Maiden did. It's a shame they didn't. I think they could've been a huge influence in the course the genre. I love their music to this day. I hope Kevin keeps bringing Angel Witch to the world. We desperately need quality Metal.

In my humble opinion their debut was the best NWOBHM album, killer riffs and vocals a true metal classic. Got to meet Kevin Riddles and Kevin Heybourne some years ago and they are truly nice guys. Heybourne is a rare talent, a shame he never got through recognition he deserved. Incidentally the As Above So Below album is almost a follow on from the debut back to the old days. fascinating histopry of Angel Witch. I loved the first album - was one of the very first metal albums I bought and for me at the time it was one of the truly defining albums of what metal should sound like - heavy, melodic and dark in places with otherworldly or occult lyrics and imagery. They were very influential on what came next in metal. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth for instance quotes them as a definite influence and Onslaught did a great cover of "Confused." I kind of lost track of Angel Witch after the first two albums, over the years, so great to hear this history and I will definitely be checking out the albums I missed!

Great video! I don't know if metal fans who were born after 1980 can fully understand how groundbreaking the Angel Witch debut album was. Some elements of the music were firmly rooted in the 70's, but the rest was so far far beyond anything that was going in at the time. Thrash, doom and even black metal can all be traced back to the album.

I saw the original four piece with Rob Downing on rhythm many times in local South East London boozers , The Dutch House and Saxon Tavern, back then they had a couple of Black Sabbath and U.F.O. covers in the set. Great live band , really exciting and professional production with dry ice, flash bombs and, lighting for an unsigned band back in 1978/9 playing pub back rooms. So glad someone gave this amazing band a proper retrospective. Especially since there doesn't seem to be a lot of documentation and they don't do that many interviews...not as far as I know. They're kind of mystery band. Some of what I had heard that hurt the band was drugs (but I don't know how true that was and I don't want to start rumors) and I heard that Kevin had a side job as a tree surgeon or something like that. Anyway, it's a real shame that they didn't have more success than they did,but I sure am glad that they're still around and hopefully we won't have to wait too long for another album. One thing that you missed is the "Resurrection" comp that collected the demos from the American version as well as a few other versions of the band. It's super heavy and the guitar tone is more in the fuzzy 90's Metal style, closer to Exhorder and Pantera than what they're known for. And ,of course, the production is murky, muddy and bass-heavy but overall it's pretty killer. Thanks again for this retrospective,it was well done. Just like the ones you did before. Keep up the great work, dude!! 🤘🤘

I have it in a frame.Anyway, that's the kind of person he is. Very approachable and polite. I think he is still great and always has a good band backing him up. Angel Witch's latest releases are amazing! Still very worthy and vibrant. Remember, this is about "music" not fame. Take fame and shove it! It's really up to us not some money grubbing record companies or promoters. The good news is that independent is where it's at. You are allowed to make your own money. Imagine that.
