Fran Tarkenton was amazing. He held all the NFL passing records at the time that he had retired, and made it to 4 Super Bowls. And he was the original "Patrick Mahomes", as he would extend plays for 15-20-30 seconds at a time, and do figures-eights and reverse figure-eights in the backfield, while throwing the Football downfield with precision on the run. There was not a single pass that Tarkenton could not make, and he could also beat you with his feet. In terms of pure QB talent, Fran Tarkenton was at a level that redefined the range of the QB position. He is often overlooked, but deserves to be in the top 4 or 5 of ALL TIME.

@bryanjones44444 ай бұрын
Well done bring up Fran. I have created a formula that compares all the great quarterbacks since 1947. It is the most comprehensive analysis of a quarterbacks career ever created using 16 different statistical categories. It is based on finding out how far above the average quarterback in their own era that they were. When you run all the Hall of Famers and today's greats through the extensive process Fran is not only top 5, he is #1. The farthest above average of any quarterback since 1947 and it is not that close. Rounding out the top 5 are Manning, Brees, Unitas and Rodgers. And if you are thinking that the championships are not taken into consideration you would be wrong. Brady comes in at #7 and if not for the championships would fall to the mid teens.
@DianeLake-sw3ymАй бұрын
Tarkenton is very much under rated as a great qb. He was so dominate and seen in his time as what today we would call the GOAT. He really was a great qb and it's way past time for a re-assessment of this man's career and stop being overlooked. He needs to be remembered and given a little respect today. I like Mahomes being on the list. He is really what they call a baby Goat. Young and an up and comer but, already one of the great qbs.
@bryanjones4444Ай бұрын
@@DianeLake-sw3ym Strangely he was not seen as a great quarterback by many when he was playing. He didn't get the respect that he earned because at that time it was looked down on when he extended plays with his feet. A quality that we value very highly today. It was not until he held all the passing records that he was talked about as being very good in most football circles. This feeling was emphasized when he was not elected to the Hall of Fame until his third year of eligibility. It was an absolute disgrace. That disrespect still follows him around today when you see top all time quarterback lists and Fran is ranked in the high teens or twenties. When in fact no quarterback, since 1947, has ever played as high above the average quarterback of their own era as Fran Tarkenton did.

No Elway or Marino is crazy imo, Elway never had great individual stats but that's primarily because he had the worst teams around him out of any all-time great quarterback ever. He was (justifiably) known for being clutch as hell and brought his Broncos to five Superbowls and won two despite the rest of the team being terrible for three of those Superbowl runs. Marino can be criticized for shrinking in the playoffs and having no rings, but his sheer production cannot be ignored. He had one of the greatest arms in history and his (regular season) numbers are still great by today's standards which you can't say about any other quarterback from that era, not even the illustrious Joe Montana. I disagree. Winning games, especially in the post season is part of being a hall-of-fame quarterback through leadership and clutch play. I find it difficult to place any QB in the top 10 without a championship but in reality it is only tempting to do in one case and that is Marino. I would argue that all personal stats are team stats if you make the argument about wins. There are plenty of players at any position who had the talent but never put up huge numbers because of the team around them. Ironically some players like Marino may have put up huge stats because they were trying to carry their whole team on their shoulders. Dan would have never had so many passing yards if he had a good running back and defense.
@bryanjones44443 ай бұрын
@@robertvirnig638 Very good points but I don't think you can have it both ways saying all stats are team stats and also saying that no one but Marino gets top 10 consideration without a ring. No player makes it to the Hall of Fame without their teammates coming through for them. Statistics are kept for a reason in all sports and generally are a good indication of the play of the individual. Especially over an extended period of time. Just to give you one example to consider, most pundits seem to think that Tom Brady is the GOAT and with the way you feel about championships it seems you may be among them. But you also bring up leadership and clutch play. Would it surprise you that Kirk Cousins average playoff game is better than Tom Brady's average playoff game even though he was sacked 3 times as often as Tom?. Tom's teams have enjoyed 7 championships and Cousin's teams have won only one playoff game. The answer lies in us realizing that a quarterback has only about 6-8% of the responsibility for winning and losing. That is more than twice any other player but still far less than most pundits would admit. There are 53 players and lots of coaches contributing but most pundits seem to think it is all about the quarterback, it is insulting to all the other players on the team.
@landongray86873 ай бұрын
@@robertvirnig638 I get where you are coming from, I do believe it is the qbs responsibility to lead the team to win, but he shouldnt be credited for all of the teams success nor should they be accountable for all of the teams failures. A qb can only do so much, like look at the 2010 super bowl, colts saints, Manning was leading a game winning drive and he was supposed to get the ball out quickly to reggie wayne. Instead of turing quickly for the ball, Reggie Wayne runs a slow route and tracy porter picks it off. For some reason people blame peyton for that, and then the next drive peyton throws the ball over the center and his TE drops it, he manages to get in field goal territory, throws the ball again and another reciever dropped it. Theres nothing he could have done there to help his team.
In no particular order: - Tom Brady - Peyton Manning - Aaron Rodgers - Drew Brees - Joe Montana - Roger Staubach - Otto Graham - Johnny Unitas - Patrick Mahomes - Dan Marino Honorable Mention: - Brett Favre - John Elway - Steve Young - Fran Tarkenton - Ben Roethlisberger

So with all due respect you can take your winning argument and toss it cause it amounts of all of 2 cents in this discussion an that's me being generous. The fact your argument has to focus on a team accomplishment rather than how brady actually played speaks volumes. On any given year the best quarterback in the league will win league MVP. Yet before Mahomes last year no MVP had won it since 1999, and out of the 38 times a QB has won mvp, only 6 of those ended in a SB victory. Think back on the greatest QB seasons in NFL history. 1984 marino, 2007 brady, 2011 rodgers, 2013 Peyton, 2018 mahomes. What do they all have in common? No rings. At a certain point it just become obvious, the best QB rarely wins wht sb, so why does winning it the most make brady the best of all time? It doesn't. Brady ain't the GOAT. Like I said. Brady's had a ton of games just like rodgers did in 2021. So that stance doesn't even help you. We're talking about thee ultimate team sport here. Absolutely, but he wouldn't make it a season if he played in the 70s or 80s. In those eras, Bountygate was basically the defensive playbook. The defense's job was to take out the quarterback, and if he walked away at the end of the game, you weren't playing hard enough. Manning went to 2, defeating Rex Grossman the first time and then riding his defense to the next. Bad list.

I have created a formula that shows how far above the average quarterback of their own era all the greats were. 16 different categories are judged which makes it the most comprehensive study ever done. I am amazed that you bring up the name Kirk Cousins. Kirk is perhaps the most underrated quarterback of the last 40 years. Kudos to you. In my formula he does not make it to the top 10 since 1947 but he does make the top 20. I have not run Dak though the process yet. Kirk is ahead of Graham and Farve and Mahomes has not played long enough.

Farve won 3 MVPs in a row! He was better than Rodgers and Mahomes. Why. Everybody on the list except for Mahomes & and Rodgers to some extent played TACKLE FOOTBALL. In 2018, Bodyslmming QBs was outlawed, that was Mahomes first starting season.
