There was a season way back when Rassie coached the Cheetahs or Freestate or something. He'd sit on top of the stadium roof with coloured lights, and flash fake (?) signals to his team, and the opposition were so concerned about this that they were watching the lights and not the game. Genius.

Totally right about your Rassie been Director of Rugby interpretation. Don't know if other countries have such job title. Rather newish in SA (last 8 to 10yrs) Fancy name to keep a senior coach and give him more percs and maybe a little less time next to field. But in case of Rassie & Jake White (Bulls) they are very hands on and are the de racto coaches. Even at press conferences the players/journos look at them when tough questions are asked. And they politely try the actual coaches to answer it ....

Galthié's genius is on analysis of the game, his players and his himself. He knows that he's not a good manager, that's why he choosed Ibañez as manager. Also his capacities to get a very strong staff is impressive. Everyone is talking about Edwards, but the truth is that Vlok Cilliers and Thibaud Giroud are more important and impactful to France's team than Edwards. Also, Garcès is very important, he turned France into one of the most top 10 team penalized, in one of the less penalized in a very short time

Rassie' 65% win rate is due to the initial period when he just took over, where the springboks were outside the top 5 in the rankings. They lost to Italy, they also lost 57-0 to the all blacks.. most senior players retired, like Matfield, Botha, Burger, Habana and many more.. He had to start from scratch. So to go from that, inside 18 months to winning the RWC, B&I Lions tour, the URC trophy and most other games is remarkable.

Good list. I'd like to know NH ppls opinions regarding Gregor Townsend. He seems to get some fantastic performances out of the Scotland team, but I'm not sure what his credentials really are. Scotland play a lot more "heads up" rugby under Townsend than they did with Andy Robinson, Scott Johnson and even Vern Cotter (who I think was the better coach if I'm being honest) so they're now a much more exciting team to watch...but struggle mentally and can't easily convert pressure into points. A lot of their tries come from breaks and questionable opposition defence. Van Der Merwe's try against England and their loss to France in this year's 6N are the best examples. His contract is on the line I think in France...their pool is tough but technically I think they're capable of beating SA (but not Ireland) as their pack has actually been very good. But I think their attitude is still a case of "beating this team will be an outstanding achievement, but if we lose valiantly there are lots of positives to take" rather than "we can and will win the tournament".

Great video and commentary. Now I'm thinking about my own top 5 ... In no particular order: Robertson, Farrell, Galthie, Jones & maybe Gatland. Only reason I don't include Rassie is because as the Director of Rugby he is not technically an active coach but as you say, it's debatable how much influence he does or doesn't have. He and Nienaber actually met when they were doing military service a couple of decades ago! How about all-time greatest coaches? From a South African perspective I'd have Rassie, Kitch and Mallet as my top three with Jake White and Ian McIntosh completing the five. Queue angry comments about leaving certain other people out!

@@uggy Gatland probably gets a bit of a raw deal from us in the southern hemisphere because of his personality and the more pragmatic approach we've seen from the Welsh and Lions. But so be it! Not sure on the Mallet choice. Yes, he reached those 17wins in a row, but he also left SA rugby in tatters and his tail between his legs when he resigned and went to Italy such was the damage he did subsequently thanks to that destructive ego of his. Everything broke when they lost that 18th game and the house of cards came tumbling down spectacularly.
@frontrowrugby
@frontrowrugby Жыл бұрын
@@matthewvanrensburg3824 Yes quite right, things did fall apart after we lost to England at Twickenham. Mallett made mistakes and that's what caused the wheels to come off. I'd say that is something that has happened to most coaches. You have to learn from those and to his credit he did apologise to Gary Teichmann for example. One of the problems with the national team job is that often one mistake can be fatal and you don't get another chance. For me the 17 consecutive wins and an overall winning percentage of ~71% plus winning away against Australia and New Zealand stands out.
@matthewvanrensburg3824
@matthewvanrensburg3824 Жыл бұрын
@@frontrowrugby Mallet was a solid coach, and that 71% is good, but then, he also resigned before seeing out his tenure and risking damage to the stat, choosing to run away than go through the trial of steadying the ship. It took Mallet a long time to rebuild his reputation after that. And while there is room to debate he may have become a better coach afterwards, learning from his mistakes, that 'improved' coach isn't the coach the Bok had. Mallet for 4th, I can see, but I don't see an argument for him being above the 3 WC winning coaches.

hard to take you serious, Jamie surely has to be fourth equal and i think you should coach a national team or have to be a elite, scotty without a doubt is very good but he too has had a average year record wise been beaten twice by the same coach by a record @ home with his biggest losing margin, and that coach in my opinion was made to look silly by Brad. By far the best rugby played this year was that heineiken cup quarter final id kick the yarpies only any good at home and made to look average that top 14 is a decent comp. i hope you watched these game, i do cause super is crap and dying even the slow addle brained currie cup is better.

There isnt a better coach as rassie,he even make players springboks even if not so good...onther reason is it is the most difficuilt team ans circumstance to coach(poketics,differ race ethnic groups etc).....and to take a team out off a deep dark hole and win the ab's ,and the wc in 18months....it speaks for itself...

With Eddie’s record of failure (he has almost never been successful anywhere for more than 2 years, fired by wallabies 06, reds wooden spoon in 07, let go from saracens and England) and living off previous coaches work means I can’t take him seriously as a “top” coach

A coach that has not coached in South Africa cannot be counted. In South Africa we have political dictatorship which has cost us world cups in cricket and has cost our top coaches their jobs. Mallet , White , etc. Rassie has the diplomacy to work with these odds. Few could. Dont mistake my comments for being against black elite sportsmen. Im very much for them and support and proud of them. Its our defunct polititians that are incapable of building our country but for some reason arround elections threaten teams as well as the Springbok emblem. Rassie has to work against or with that mentality. Eddie would not last a week in SA . He to blunt and doesnt tolerate bullshit. 😅😅

I've watched women's rugby for about 20 years. Agree that they're really pushing it and probably linked to the woke stuff, but I reckon they're also pushing it for gambling purposes. Partly because they want more women gambling and also, generally speaking, recreational sports punters stick to the sports they know

I think it is really impressive, in this day and age, that you are willing to admit that you are intimidated by women who are faster, stronger and more skillful than you. Well done 22grena.
@jestersage8700
@jestersage8700 Жыл бұрын
@Opal Miner it's not being intimidated it's acknowledging the truth. They push it and exaggerated it. If men were playing the same level of rugby it'd be called trash and no one would take them seriously but because they're women they get a pass I'm sure eventually the rugby will get to a good enough level but as it is now it isn't. Whether they'd be better than him isn't an argument. I just hope it isn't as bad as the nba where they take from the men to support the wnba and still result in a $10m loss never ever having made a profit after 20 years

All this Rassie talk, good coach but awful human being. Has brought the game into disrepute on numerous occasions! Flashing lights into opposing teams from stadium roof, making disgusting videos, abusing refs face to face and online... There are 3 top coaches currently, Gatland, Farrell and Galthie. Jones has now gone 4 games without a win lol Gatland is undeniable, and maybe turning Wales into something special again...
France's Top 14 is so far ahead of the world...
