My personal theory for Leon is that he is Lisa's blood relative, but on the side of the family that didn't own the hotel. He must have also had some forethought to his vampire plan as he would first need to make sure Lisa is suspectable to hypnosis; hypnosis doesn't work on everyone in real life, but even if we go by cartoon rules, he would have had to implant the hypnotic suggestion in her mind that a specific sound triggers the vampirism. Anyway, I'm glad you pointed out how dark and fucked up Leon actually was, 'cause even as a small child watching this episode, it was something I picked up on, and it made this episode one of my favorites

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned that The Three (ish) Vikings' outfits weren't apropriate for the weather. Sure, they might have wore a full insulated bodysuit to appear bulkier, but from what we see there is a lot of exposed skin in freezing cold temperature. Also absolute classic at this point - they couldn't have operated their ship with only 3 pairs of hands. If we go the 'Worst Case Scenario' route and assume that Leon murdered Lisa's parents and possibly another person we should give him an extra point for... well commiting multiple murders which weren't connected to him for 18 years. After so many episodes and series we can see that most of them seem to be assembled from bits and pieces of both script and assets. It's like Hanna-Barbera contracted the artists for a whole batch of characters and backgrounds in advance and then asked scriptwriters to make plot for them. And like 15 episodes with enough material for maybe 10. So yes, they have a hard time counting beyond two or remember minor plot points. Or entire characters. Or they find out at the end that they don't even have a second suspect so they have to add some random rude and intimidating guy. Regarding the screen captures from Patreon - I would call it an improvement! The faces are ridiculous, Vamp is huge, but I don't see any missing limbs, invisible drivers, empty signs or warped backgrounds. Ignoring the behind the scenes and focusing purely in-universe: Scooby and Shaggy may have access to pocket dimension, but I have an even better theory. They are speedsters akin to Flash. During those few seconds when the bad guy catches up to them they manage to run as far as needed to gather all the props, come back, assemble the whole scene, get changed and discuss the entire plan. It would also explain their unending hunger - an energy cost of moving hundreds of times faster than human is enormous. They could have easily escaped or beat the bad guy (not even mentioning Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme (btw. I hope you will adress it at some point)) but they don't to not spoil the fun for Fred. i would love to see a special video discussing the greatest and most absurd feat in each series. Inhuman strenght, teleportation, reality warping... the person in cactus disguise in 'New Scooby-Doo Movies' transcended humanity and deflated themself to ascend to higher plane of existence. Those are only a few thoughs, I will keep the rest for following videos. Now when I started commenting I hope I will keep it rolling. Thank you for making those amazing analyses!
@JoeGoesOver8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the nice comments! You're right, I completely missed how the villains should have been freezing to death wearing outfits that didn't cover the majority of their bodies! However, I'm also leaning toward them wearing muscle suits because when they're tied up, the don't look anywhere near as jacked as they did dressed as the Vikings. I'm willing to set aside the lack of crew to control the longship as they were only using it to go back and forth on the lake and not the choppy high seas. If I was more certain that Leon had murdered Lisa's parents, I absolutely would have scored him higher. As it was, there was too much ambiguity as to what happened to them, so it wouldn't have been fair. In the days before computers when sets (even animated ones) had to be created by hand, it was common for a show's producers to re-write scripts to utilize existing ones to get as much use out of them as possible. To sell shows to networks prior to being greenlit, it was common to show concept art or produce test footage. Leave it to Hanna-Barbera to save a dime by incorporating those assets into the finished product. Then again, in their defense, the early days of Scooby-Doo were long before the concept of home video, when at best a series would be syndicated and viewers would see the show maybe twice during the initial run and once or twice again in syndication. They wouldn't have a chance to dwell on production mistakes or reused elements. For myself, the more I spend on these videos, the more I'm coming to recognize when animation gets reused. I'm constantly noticing when members of the Gang are taken from the first season of 'Where Are You?'. I HAD to include the giant Gramps the Vamp. It was ridiculous how they drew him literally more than twice the size of everyone else while hiding in that small closet! Hah! I like your Speedster theory! That would explain the increased appetites! On one hand, I think you give them too much credit not to simply run away because they didn't want to disappoint Fred and the others' love of mysteries; on the other hand, though, it would explain why the boys are always doing what they're asked, like splitting up to search spooky locations or acting as bait for the monsters. That's not a bad idea for a video idea and one I wouldn't rule out doing, but currently I'm focused on the Ranking videos and simply don't have the time and energy to devote to much additional video topics. In addition to my usual content, I'm working on a couple of other projects for my channel that may end up delaying my usual content for a week or two. As it may be a while before those get completed, I won't say much more than that at this time. Thank you very much for watching and supporting my channel!

I'll go full on tin-foil hat mode here to explain the appearance of the Scooby-Dooby bike-a-copter: There has been that silly fan theory that Shaggy is actually some sort of magic practitioner, with Scooby being his familiar. This on account of all the super-human feats the two have. Plus Scooby being so long-lived/a talking dog. Perhaps the reason the two need to devour so much food is that their inherent powers take a lot of calories to utilize? They have displayed magical powers before when they got their hands on the spell book in the ghost of Ebenezer episode, and didn't seem too fussed about turning themselves into monsters momentarily.
@JoeGoesOver8 ай бұрын
An earlier comment theorized that Shaggy and Scooby are able to access the fabled "Speed Force" of the Flash comics, allowing them to move faster than the eye can see to gather their props and disguises. Shaggy being a wizard and Scooby his talking familiar makes as convincing a theory. One of the 'Be Cool, Scooby-Doo' episodes breaks the fourth wall slightly by bringing up this very point of their eating habits and Scooby's ability to speak. Thanks for watching and commenting!

If one looks closely in the backdrop of Coolsonian Criminology Museum you can see the Viking Ghost statue next to the Rambling Ghost, Warrior Queen(I don't ever think she had an episode rather as a background prop), and Finnyan McDuff. As for Gramps the Vamp we had the VHS of his episode, one thing I do love about this Vampire is the focus more on hypnosis as his signature Vladdian trope. Though in most depictions of Vampires the thing is they can't hypnotize other Vampires, let alone if their wearing contacts so that could've been a flaw in his scheme. (Hotel transylvania 1 and 2 pointed this out). That and what should've gave it away of him not being a real vampire is him shown in photograph, as then again Vampires usually don't appear in reflective imagery.(Granted this rule is more vague cause in Hotel Transylvania they can video chat themselves and be seen, and in Jojo Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders Dio being a Vampire, can be pictured through Hermit Purple)
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
Vampire lore has about as many discrepancies as 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' had off model animation and production mistakes. Having said that, when it comes to control, the idea of a vampire "bride" is reasonably commonplace in many stories like this, with the idea of their female minions being under direct control which isn't too different than hypnosis. It DOES add an extra creepy factor in this episode with the idea that Leon appeared to be making his niece his "vampire bride". I didn't touch on it in my video, but it felt like a slight hint of incest was in the episode, particularly how Leon held Lisa's waist when he was introduced. I'm sure it wasn't the animators' intention, but that's how it almost looked to me. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I do like your theory about him possibly being a spy from the unknown corporation that potentially helped Hansen and the Geologists build the underground mining operation. Side note, the Viking Leader that stares in through the window behind Scooby at 5:19 freaked me out as a kid, it's his unnaturally red eyes, massive beard and horned helmet, not to mention his unnerving death stare. As for Gramps The Vamp or "The Skull Island Vampire" as I like to call him. He too creeped me out when I was young, but not as much as Lisa when she becomes a vampire. Those green eyes, fang teeth and the growling (which I always wondered about why a vampire would growl and snarl like that). Also yet again, I never realised that Leon was intending to have Lisa locked up in an asylum, that completely flew over my head until I seen this video. I always assumed Leon was just wanting to have her arrested like every other Scooby villain or just keep her locked up in one of the coffins. Anyway, another excellent video Joe. Thank you very much for the kind words and for watching! On the one hand, it's just a goofy kid's show from my childhood; but on the other hand, it's fun to theorize as a grownup the hidden motivations of the villains or other aspects of their schemes that would only occur to adults with too many years of experience of dealing with other adults. In these comments, I'm definitely seeing two camps emerge with who they find more frightening, Gramps or Vampire Lisa. I've got some of the preliminary work on the Pterodactyl Ghost episode completed, but the script hasn't been started yet. Right now, my next video is shaping up to be a Ranking the Villain but NOT from 'The Scooby-Doo Show'. Hopefully when it's complete, it won't disappoint too many who were expecting an immediate continuation of this series. As I said, I'm definitely heading toward the next two episodes of season two, but there will be a slight detour. Barring any unforeseen delays, you'll get to see Milo Booth before the middle of April!

I think the reason so many of the villains don't take the gang seriously is their age. Like they aren't official detectives and are nineteen years old at most. Maybe the police never admit the gang helped solve the case out of embarrassment. Then from the villains prospectives they would think 'how cute, these brats think they can stop me. Might as well scare them for fun' or something like that.
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
That is one of the odd things about the Scooby-Dooniverse that doesn't get addressed enough. In general, at the end of every episode when the sheriff is there to pick up the bad guy, they are almost always appreciative to the Gang for their help. It wasn't really until the 'Mystery Incorporated' series that we saw an authority figure really get annoyed with them for butting in. This is particularly unusual when considering that in real life, police are often the least appreciative of anyone pointing out that they're not doing their job correctly. Thanks for watching and commenting!

"The Curse of Viking Lake" -- The quasi-Viking outfits, the automated subterranean base of operations, the fiddling around with materials or potential doomsday weapons... I know this was HB's intention, but this gives me a nostalgic feeling for King Kull the Beastman, one of the rogues gallery from the classic Captain Marvel comics. 11:30 -- If this has been a JONNY QUEST episode, I'd opine this was a real Viking ghost who would deal with Hanson and his cohorts by the episode's end. 18:00 -- Every family has an "Uncle John". If it doesn't, then you're probably that uncle. "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats" -- Maybe Uncle Leon's schemes had nothing to do with the resort, and instead he wanted to claim the power of Castle Greyskull for himself? In all seriousness, though, perhaps his plan was the kill Lisa, but one that required her apparently developing a psychotic obsession with vampires. we see him as the "Gramp the Vamp" placing Lisa in a coffin... perhaps his intention was for her to asphyxiate due to this bizarre new habit?
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
You make a good point. Why DID he have her lay down in the coffin? He wasn't trying to kidnap her. Maybe he just wanted her kept in there so when the orderlies arrived from the asylum, it'd be easier to prove she thought she was a vampire? Fortunately the two or three Uncle Johns in my family took themselves out of the picture long before the rest of us had to kick them out ourselves. And yeah, Jonny Quest LOVED to kill their bad guys at the end! That show didn't screw around. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

To be fair it was created in the 90s (with ones of the best polish voice actors back then) not in the 70s, but it's slightly more mature in moments like this.

In defense of the men Dressed, as Vikings. I can understand why they would want to wear the outfits when they kidnap uncle john. After all even if it is nighttime there's a good chance that someone could still be around and maybe see you kidnapped them. And in that case , you definitely don't Want them to see your face. So I imagine that reason they had their costume still on were just to make sure if anyone did see them they wouldn't know who they were.
@JoeGoesOver8 ай бұрын
That's a very good point and likely the best explanation for their behavior. It's just interesting that we literally see no other human beings in the entire episode other than the Gang, Uncle John, the sheriff, the three villains and the mysterious fourth Viking. That's a common issue with Scooby films and episodes (and to be fair, animation in general): the lack of background characters where you would normally see them. Like how the streets of San Francisco were practically deserted during the car chase in 'Mystery Mask Mix-up'. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@TrocaTheNero8 ай бұрын
As a Swede, I'd say Viking Lake takes place either in Newfoundland or somewhere in the northern Midwest like the Dakotas or Minnesota, as a lot of Norwegians and Swedes migrated there in the mid-19th century to early 20th century. Interesting that the only Viking ghost to actually hold a weapon (a sword) was the mysterious fourth one who is never seen again, you'd think three ghosts of Viking warriors would have some weapons on them. I also want to point out that while Vikings did raid, pillage and do some human sacrifice, not all of them sailed to different places to invade, but instead to trade. Also, most scandinavian people during the Viking Age were not Vikings who sailed the seas, but rather typical medieval peasants and such. The Viking costumes were nothing too special, but honestly in my heart I see these as the true first Viking monsters because the previous one was a mannequin and also not as cool-looking and also from TNSDM... 12:56 I believe the words you were thinking of there were "F***ing 1970s..." Leon is one very evil Scooby villain with that plan. Even out of disguise he just looks very shady. His vampire costume was nothing special but like with the Vikings, better and less generic than the previous vampires. Considering Gramps looked like your typical Dracula, could shapeshift and also partially mind control someone, it seems his disguise was likely a Tzimisce. God would he be scarier if he had Vicissitude... oh and also I guess Leon could use the vampire rumors and the story of his niece going insane and thinking she's a vampire as a way to market the hotel after his plan had succeeded? Great video as always, Joe!
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words! Good catch on the mysterious fourth Viking being the only one armed. This may lead credence to the theory he was keeping an eye on the other three to make sure they didn't screw up the plan. You don't give a henchman a weapon if they're likely to turn on you! And no disrespect meant to those of Nordic heritage. EVERY culture has some awful moments in its history. I just always get a kick out of shows that are meant to be lighthearted or whimsical containing people or characters known for violence. Like how in the first Bill and Ted film, most of the "historical figures" suffered terrible deaths not too long after they met the boys in real life. Yes, indeed. F****** 1970s. As a bald guy myself, it hurts to admit that Leon's hairline makes him look very questionable. He would be ahead of the times if he was to market the hotel based on its problematic background. Businesses back then were more interested in hiding their itchy pasts than exploit them. If the first 'Ghostbusters' film took place today, the snooty hotel concierge wouldn't have called the scientists to exorcise Slimer, but would have charged even more for rooms on that floor to people hooked on the supernatural. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

I think "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats" is my favorite episode. I've had it on VHS "Scooby Doo's Spookiest Tales". As I grew up I also came up with the theory that Uncle Leon killed Lisa's parents. However, I think that Uncle Leon might as well be Lisa's paternal uncle. Being from Serbia, the episode was dubbed and Leon's full name was translated to Stric Leon ("Stric" means paternal uncle in Serbian). My theory regarding the hotel and why would Leon easily use his father as a scheme is that perhaps Leon was estranged from the family until Lisa was born or Leon's father left the hotel to his other son, Lisa's father. Angry, Leon killed Lisa's parents and took a role of her caretaker.

It's always fascinating to me how people localizing media from other countries occasionally (and likely inadvertently) introduce plot elements that took the show into another direction that wasn't intended by the original writers. It really says something about these episodes as a whole that, despite watching this show on a local station daily as a kid, I remember neither of these episodes at all. My personal idea for how the grey viking showed up when the gang were with Hansen is that it was one of the geologists in the the grey beard and wig to keep the gang from noticing that the grey viking tended to show up on his own and always when Hansen wasn't around. It's also possible the villains had spare costume pieces somewhere, which they could've used to create the impression of they're being more ghosts, and that's where the mysterious brown viking came from. As for why Hansen abducted uncle John in costume, I'd wager it was to avoid being recognized should someone see him on his way back to the mine hideout. After all, the cops are far less likely to catch you if the only description of you a witness could provide is that of an undead berzerker. I can't help but wonder if early in the development of Mystery Inc., the writers looked through older Scooby shows for inspiration and partially based the mayor Jones twist on uncle Leon. It's not very likely, but it's possible.
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
It would be difficult to say if the 'Mystery Inc' writers found inspiration from Uncle Leon, but I wouldn't rule it out, either. After all, that entire series was a love letter to the franchise. In Dooniverse, I could see the three villains having a pile of costumes that they just grabbed at random when needed, except disguises work best when made to fit the exact face and body type, so it's not a good idea to swap. Let alone wanting to put on some other guy's outfit that they were probably sweating and breathing in for hours at a time. Yuck. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@JoeGoesOver I thought that be the case but wanted to shoot the idea anyway. There's something else I want to bring up. Does the value of the villain's plot also be determined by location? I mean cost of living could make a difference from place to place and make the scheme seem more worth it.
@JoeGoesOver7 ай бұрын
I focus on inflation more than anything because that seems to remain a constant, and while cost of living could be a legitimate factor in determining value, I can't imagine it would vary enough between the poorest and most expensive parts of this country enough to make much of a difference. Granted, these days if you wanted to retire at a young age, even a million dollars wouldn't be enough (that's literally just 13 years or so with a median household income), but if you were to find a third-world country where the average monthly salary was $100 or less, you could easily live like a king on your ill-gotten gains. That's likely just asking me for more supposition than it's worth for my videos.

The mirrors are used to split the light coming into the camera so what hits the film also comes through the viewfinder. In cheaper cameras, the viewfinder is literally just a window. This usually isn't an issue as long as what you're photographing is far enough away, but the closer you get to the object, the greater the difference between what you see and what will end up on the film. For example, if you take a photo of someone fifty feet away, they will appear more or less the same on the final print. However, if you get a couple of feet away, what appears on the film will be lower and to the right to what you thought you were photographing.

Actually Leon picked a good night in one way. Having all the coffins there gave a reason for a vampire to have been delivered instead of being someone already inside. Helps sell the story of Gramps finding them. Also, if Lisa was hypnotized & didn't remember her actions only the witness from her friends would convince her it was happening which means she could be pressured to sign it over based on uncertainty or resign to being comitted based on friend testimony. However, by those friends also seeing the "actual" vampire it feels like it wouldn't be on her but the vampire who was turning her. I think his biggest mistake was dressing up. Better to just hypnotize and let her act that way in front of friends with no other vampire in the picture to truly sell her losing it.

[yes, I'm making a Rick and Morty and a gravity falls joke in one turn] although a guy might probably buying from Vikings is a lot easier than trying to find a crashed UFO! And ironically enough again another case of you would make more money and not risk getting in trouble if you just realized what was your secondary part of your plan! [I mean just look at Greenland & Iceland how much money that they're making from selling their geothermal leftover energy to other countries!] also we all know the real reason why they went with Vikings instead of dwarfs they're all too tall!

You make a good point! So often the Scooby villains suffer from pathological tunnel vision they can't see the real way to fame and fortune is their disguise or operation itself and NOT the criminal aspect! Bluestone the Great's illusions were good enough to be headlining a show in Vegas, but instead he's schlepping around a foggy island castle in the middle of nowhere! All uncle leon had to do was just ask to have the hotel/to buy the hotel

But his niece probably wouldn't have agreed. She seemed fairly eager to gain control.

For the vampires bats and scaredy cats that episode makes you feel fear that the gang could become vampires themselves though that does get debunked later because Daphne had no repose to the bells but yet you can still feel terrified of them possibly being turned into vampires but the big question is when did uncle Leon hypothesize Lisa (btw I am from Iowa)

I assume Leon would have been sneaking into Lisa's room at night when she was most vulnerable to perform the hypnotic conditioning. It stands to reason as we saw how easily he crept into her room when it was being used by Daphne and Velma. This, of course, adds an entirely new dimension to Leon's creepiness that we should probably not dwell on. Thanks for watching and commenting!

That vampire gave me nightmares so many times

I've heard that a lot now in the comments! I still think Space Kook was worse, but I can see why Gramps the Vamp would be in the top tier as well. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

As someone who has not seen most of these episodes since the early 2000s it amazes me just how cheap and messy hanna barbera was.

It's weird just how much the quality can vary between episodes or even within the same one. The more I work on these videos, the more obvious it becomes as I'm scrubbing through footage that the best animation happened in 'Where Are You?' and when there are good bits in 'The Scooby-Doo Show', it's likely because they reused cels used from the earlier series whenever possible. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Probably to make up for the Witch's Ghost video taking an extra week. This next one will probably get us back to the usual two weeks.

You're not wrong. I'm in the middle of doing a couple of other KZbin projects (two Scooby, two non-Scooby) and they're cutting a bit into my script writing schedule. One of the Scooby ones is nearing the point of filming my narration, which starts the editing process. For various reasons, it's slightly more complicated than usual, but it will be another Villain Ranking video. It's safe to say that, barring anything unforeseen, my usual schedule is likely to remain "every other week" on average. Thank you for watching and commenting!
