Before I retired as a naval architect and marine engineer, people would ask me how I could keep my design practice open since hull shapes can be so similar. My reply always included an explanation of how everyone has a different idea of what the ideal boat is and that's why there are so many designers and variations you see at boat shows. Even then, boat designs intended for the masses are always a crap shoot, and never please everyone. That's where custom options come into play and re-designs during re-fits. Whenever someone would ask me what I do for a living, I would tell them I'm in the business of selling dreams! If you find a boat design with a size, hull shape, and general interior layout you find reasonable, you can always fine-tune the vessel to fit your specific needs. Of course, you can have just about anything and everything you want providing you have a very thick wallet! All the best in your search, and I'm looking forward to finding out what you decide on.

The last boat ( Diana60) looks pretty well thought out even that you didnt show much of it. A positive: a narrow galley, big windows, dog house (HUGE!), cutter rig. The negative - is a skeg rudder but you can live with that, its a lot better then a long keel boat from the last video.

Good lord that 57 footer you looked at in the last episode is looking better and better. The Diana 60 is the clear winner this week - general condition, quality of construction, cutter rig, furling main, doghouse, great internal layout, good galley, good value - use one of the rear cabins as a utility/storage/spare cabin. Lots of good points - I’ll take it! Though at 60’ it’s getting up there... Of course there’s no perfect boat. It’s just a case of where and on what you compromise and finding the right balance for you. Happy hunting.

Keep looking. The Diana 60 is the closest to what you wanted in a cruising boat, but it is a very big boat, much bigger than what you said you wanted. You know what you want. Don’t settle or feel pressured....Everybody that’s pushing the one with a door to the engine room doesn’t understand living on a sailboat and cruising. Just because you can stand up in an engine room is not a reason to buy a sailboat that doesn’t fit the rest of your needs any more than picking the prettiest colored boat. How much time are you going to spend in an engine room? You need a boat that fits your live aboard/ cruising needs.

Hi Marlin and Johan, the Diana 60 is a fine yacht. Big aft deck and a salon with many windows to look outside. Good cockpit hardtop. The 57 feet ship from last week had a very small cockpit. And the deckhouse is to small and to slowly speed. You need much more fuel. Best regards Michael

I sailed on the hallberg rassy kismet in your video. We were delivering it from the Netherlands to Lefkada in Greece. There were a number of issues with her on the passage. Then when making our way towards the Gibraltar straits, we had a serious interaction with a pod of orcas and spent two hours with them bashing up against the rudder. The damage meant we had to leave the boat in Gibraltar. I flew back to the Uk and out to Greece to my own boat instead. I think you made the right choice.

Congratulations again. Correct choice in my opinion for a real full time home. I also noticed this Diana in the listings, I like it, but lot's of narrow tunnels and can't touch the OVM, for spaciousness, livability, Film-ability, natural light with butterfly hatches for meters (important for your videos) and simple charm and old world high class. I hope to see you out there some day! I will recognize her from 2 miles.

Two comments if I may. One, soon you will be sailing/traveling with three, safety should be a key consideration in layout. Two, before you write off the HR (aft cabin) I’d schedule a visit with the yard and discuss modification options to the aft cabin. HR is not far from you and would be worth a day trip to meet with them. I’ve personally seen what they can customize and they do outstanding work. Note: I am biased as I own an HR 48MK II but they are so great to work with - and their Parts Dept will have anything you ever need for your boat :-). Best of luck whichever direction you choose.

I am very glad to see a couple able to view a boat with a critical eye to their own needs, and not be persuaded only by fine woodwork, or some small feature that will be forgotten after the first week of ownership. Given the layout of the first boats, the Diana 60 would be the preferred boat among that group. How could it be otherwise, since the Diana is at least 11' longer and no telling how much wider than the rest, plus priced lower? For me, none of this group 'floats my boat'. I am surprised that this couple is limiting themselves by not checking out catamarans or trimarans in their price range - no more heeling over in a brisk breeze! Live life standing upright, or laying down on a level surface - like gravity meant humans to live!

For me the Van Meer knocks spots off these 4 boats, I think she is beautiful, the layout is superb, more traditional and far more like a home than a boat. The walk in engine room is a great feature and a bit special with the enclosed cooling system and other equipment. Also the build of the hull which is very heavy duty, I think she would sail as if on rails in heavy weather. I would feel very safe crossing an ocean in the Van Meer. Its your decision though not mine and I wish you well with whatever you decide on, good luck.

Great to watch your boat hunt. I see a lot of similarities in mine....like platform, material (no steel!!), sturdiness.
