Heard Sabbath, Zeppelin, Quo, Deep Purple, Yes etc etc for years and got in to NWOBHM and Thrash and little bit of Death and lots and lots and lots of Black Metal but I have no problem with Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Sound Garden and Stone Temple PIlots, I was in college back then and I listened to those bands and got shit-faced drunk with my friends and it was a great time. Nick, you should check out Pantera's old catalogue from the 80's. Sounded completely different than they did in the 90's. Also, I'm sure you've heard the song Hooligan's Holiday from the John Corabi version of Motley Crue. It was huge in 1994. Lastly, listen to Pearl Jam's version of "Black" live and unplugged from MTV. It is incredible.
