The other thing that is putting me off is the amount of makeup used to practically change a person's complete look. Have you seen some of these 'catfish' makeup shorts and tutorials? You start to wonder who the real person is underneath all that spackle and paint? It's nothing but an illusion, imo, and very deceiving. Who a person is inside has always been what draws me to a person, not how "pretty/handsome" they are. I've known too many in my life that were beautiful to look at and empty inside. 😔

Such an apropos rant on filters. My partner and I were just discussing this morning how we are taught by marketing (and social media, but we are old and learned all our wrong skin information from marketing and ads) to view every skin anomaly as something to “fix.” I recently realized I was trying to fix things with my skin that weren’t really broken, so I’m backing off and relieving myself of that duty. Besides, I’m 60 years old, and my skin is still doing its job. It’s about time I just thank my skin for all its hard work and not try to force it to look perfect. Looking good for its age is a decent goal.

Dermatologist Dr Natalia Spierings discusses this in her book Skintelligent. Cosmetics companies do a lot of harm by trivialising skin conditions such as acne etc. and making people feel bad about themselves. Skin problems are a medical problem and not your fault and are not fixed overnight. As Dr Dray has explained too, normal skin has varying texture and colour on your face, it is not like it appears in those filters.

I used to work in a public library, the moment I turned 16. Worked for 3 years. Only quit cuz of overloaded college schedule. During high school, worked couple of week nights and Saturdays. When I went to college, hours varied. At our library, it opened at noon, but I started work at 8am..with shelving, checking in returned books, sorting out new books, preparing for crafts for children and pajama story time. I enjoyed all of it.

One library was just asked why they need their catalog and can't just use the State Archive's software... (They are completely different and serve different purposes.) Lots of politicians and schools also say that libraries aren't necessary because internet. Curation and fact-checking matter, as does actually loving information and inforrmation policy.

ESPECIALLY when they alter their children in the photo, which to me is the same as telling them that they are not good enough the way they are. What I notice most in older movies is that their natural tooth color is not white or not the "chicklet" white that we've become to know and love.

Not sure if you're ever discussed this or if I'm completely off but as someone with ADHD, this video spoke to me!!! (leaving things out rather than putting them away so you don't forget they exist, having next to no recollection of a book/tv series/movie you know you consumed, being tempted by impulse purchases/feeling the need to look at everything, heightened sense of empathy/justice, not wanting to deal with people, and the sheer amount of tangents in this video). That aside, I appreciate you sharing all of your knowledge/advice with us! I have definitely struggled with feelings of insecurity due to my face not 'living up' to the filter's rendition of my face. I already put on a full face of makeup nearly every day as it is, and filters definitely contribute to the warping of how I believe my face _should_ look, which makes it much more devastating when it doesn't.

Im 32 years old and definitely am a little bit self conscious about the fine lines on my forehead and the lines around my eyes when I smile, but I completely agree with you about the filters. Its bizarre that more and more everything you see on the internet and in real life is artificial. Everything seems fake and no one can live up to these fake standards. The vanity that has taken hold of society is exhausting.

I agree about the filters!! I had used a filter once that showed half your face with the filter and the other half without. Used it on my dad, and he could not believe the difference!! It's going to get to the point where people don't recognize themselves in the mirror because they're so used to seeing themselves filtered.

The danger of filters on apps and AI, that’s different from make up and cosmetic procedures, is that the end result is inherently unachievable in real life. A beauty standard that is not compatible with real life is dangerous because we’ll be forever chasing it with no end in sight

Just because somebody wrote something doesn't mean it belongs in a library. Or in a bookstore or should be published. Some books were written to show how pedophiles can go about grooming vulnerable children. This goes back decades. KMart was a huge 100+ yo, iconic store chain but refused to pull a few books like that from a bookstore chain they owned so a boycott was started - and even in the face of that (& especially the egregious books that triggered the boycott), they refused to pull the books. They lost many of their loyal core customers and started having financial troubles over time, ultimately going out of business years later. Grooming vulnerable kids via weirdo books and the latest bizarre, grotesque story hours is horrible and should not be facilitated. People have every right (obligation even) to protest their local library making available much less promoting tools of groomers.

@@barbieblue3336not sure what your experience was, but I loved books as a child. I remember going to the library and wanting to check out a book that wasn’t in the stacks marked for teens. The librarian called my mother and asked if I should be allowed the check out the book. My mother said, yes, and I took out Quo Vadas. I didn’t understand it all so some parts went over my head. I am ever grateful my mother let me read whatever captured my interest. The library opened the world to me.

I remember watching a British TV show with two middle aged women who had wrinkles, not incredibly skinny, sagging skin, etc. I came away feeling so much better about myself, knowing that I was normal and that I was really being sucked into that culture of perfection that is not real - despite being very conscious of it. The filters and photoshopping really does infiltrate our brains because it is EVERYWHERE. I would love to see more media with normal, aging people!

Librarian here. Being a librarian has a lot of upsides. Calm and quiet are not among them in a public library. I loved my work at a public library because I got to help people and because it was always interesting, always something new happening. I have broad interests and am curious, so the intellectual stimulation was great. Downsides: even with a masters degree, low pay, low pay, low pay.

@@msk-qp6fn ouch! I’m old enough to remember lots of librarians who were seemingly uninterested in helping a child. I’d like to think the field has changed and grown since then. Where I’ve worked, the librarians have been exceptionally open and kind to patrons. Most librarians I know don’t approve of being “grumpy” with patrons. Very much of that could get a person disciplined or let go. It’s not ok.

This is the first time in years I haven’t had that incredibly tight feeling after cleansing and haven’t needed to put on moisturizer. I will be using it as a body wash as well so hopefully it can remove the tight feeling I’m having on my back for many months now (been moisturizing daily so I know it’s not that).

I also find social media filters really off putting. I appreciate this channel over so many other dermatology/skin care channels, bc of Dr Dray’s focus on health over unrealistic beauty standards. In my experience, getting skin care advice from a derm with a full face of makeup is just as unrealistic and emotionally damaging as AI filters.
