The greatest tragedy of KyoAni is that they gave up doing all the Key visual novel adaptations after Air, Kanon, Clannad. I can't imagine what ReWrite and Little Busters would have been like under KyoAni. And now we'll never know.

I agree, didn't play Little Busters yet but it would be awesome to have a good adaptation of Rewrite by them.

I can understand that from a fan's perspective but from a studio's perspective, popularizing a property and then the most lucrative profit (the merchandising) going to the rights owners must make you feel bitter inside.
@Tohlemiach5 жыл бұрын
John Smith not to seem like a dick, but that's the whole fucking point of the video. Yes, got it chief, I do understand that. I'm saying despite that harsh reality, it disappoints me specifically because they stopped doing something that I really liked. Repeating Digi's point doesn't really add anything here.
@Gooong5 жыл бұрын
@@Tohlemiach I mean it just sounds like a problem that could be solved with new copyright reform to reflect work put in instead of the power being solely on rights holders. If copyright reform can distribute profit based on work put in it then studios would be searching for great source material and problems with publishing stuff internationally with different rights holders between games and anime like with Macross would be solved

I personally find KyoAni exciting to watch evolve! Not that I even really enjoy a lot of their newer stuff. It's just neat seeing how each studio changes their identity over time. I think for me the one that was the most dramatic was Ufotable going from wacky, insane, over the top shit to taking more sterile and polished approach with their projects.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I could have clarified that I did enjoy Violet, Liz, Koe no Katachi and more of their dramatic stuff. @reyairina50455 жыл бұрын
@@mizto3291 Do you have brain damage? Yes it won the kyoani award but that novel had been rewritten. It's not the same novel. Also not being published at kadokawa is not a metric for quality. Kadokawa publish plenty of far worse garbage themselves like Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de for example. Kyoani take big risks in publishing and adapting lesser known or more niche works. Most other publishers are not willing to do this.Their recent show Tsurune was a great archery anime but it didn't sell well.
@mizto32915 жыл бұрын
@@reyairina5045 It doesn't exactly change the fact that it won that KyoAni Award. The publishing of Kadokawa doesn't always reflect the quality and how Kyoani chooses an adaptation. If you're going to argue about quality and other characteristics that KyoAni adapts and puts out then I don't think this conversation will get anywhere. Kyoani has had it's fair share of success and I'm quite sure the risks they take can lead greatly. K-ON for example was a shit manga but a great anime, or Beyond the Boundary and etc.

I wonder if part of it is what directors they are using. Back in the day, Takemoto did a lot of their popular stuff. Ishihara was also big, but he isn't as good, and besides Haruhi, he mostly did Key stuff, and at least Kanon and Air are pretty bad. Later we got Yamada, but the only anime by her that fits well within the old era is K-On. In the recent years, Takemoto has been a lot less common as a director. The only stuff he did was Amaburi and Dragon Maid. Ishihara still does some stuff, but Yamada mostly does movies which are less major events in anime community than tv shows. Many of their recent anime are directed by new directors that weren't active back when Kyoani were at their height. I think that may be part of it. Thier only consistent directors, Yamada and Takemoto, have become less relevant and don't do many tv series anymore

To me, Kyoani has been leaning on creating content primed for women's tates such as anime with shows lesbian undertones and fan service for women. Nothing wrong with that at all but most of which is not my immediate preference, I think thats why a lot of us feel left out. I really want them to do a hard sci fi series at this point in time.
@hui-an-xin5 жыл бұрын
KyoAni is a hit or miss for me, when they do things well they really do things well, when they pick up the wrong project, everything falls apart and feels like a tremendous waste of energy, talent, and potential. My major issue with KyoAni is how reluctant they are with representing lqbtq characters, for example with Violet Evergarden and Tsurune, they went out of their way to tone down bisexual characters or homosexual relationships. KyoAni is not a champion of yaoi or yuri, I don't know how people keep saying that, and I cannot believe people misread Hibike in such a wrong way, when that show very clearly establishes who is attracted to who, and what degree of attraction that is. Violet Evergarden is a mismanaged mess, the source material is slightly above average at best, but the anime is overdone, with terrible anime-original arcs and rewriting. Tsurune is pretty and decent, but forgettable and cliche. Liz to Aoi Tori is the only thing I've liked in recent time. Maid Dragon is great, just not my kind of show. Free is oversaturated, while it still has decent things to say here and there, it's not as refreshing or new. Phantom World, Hyouka, and Amagi Brilliant Park were poor experiences.
