About the autism thing, I think I figured it out. The entire series was created on the basis of Yuji Naka's 'tism of playing through mario levels over and over again to see how fast he can get through them. Almost every single Sonic game has a learning curve. They all have levels to memorize, different play styles, or at times just shitty controls. The reason why autists love these games more than most is because they're more than willing to over come these learning curves and master these games.

Sonic has been ruined as a character over the years. Originally, him being cool was a result of his apparent personality traits; Impatient, full of himself, one track minded, protective, free spirited, direct. I could say that about most of the older characters. But nowadays, being "cool" is his personality. Of course, this is mostly due to trends and the team getting pretty terrible writers over the past few games, but it can't be that hard. I feel this way about the entire franchise. The idea of what a Sonic game is has gone from speed being a product of your ability to traverse the worlds and it being a reward for skill to "look how fucking fast this thing is". It's shallow and I hate it. It's like they got caught up in their own advertising. I still consider myself a fan of the franchise, but fuck man, I'm feeling the fatigue of a lot of his recent outings

Sonic is basically Dante from Devil May Cry but for kids. Both are loud, cocky, and slightly egotistical but still likable and relatable because they have an innate sense of justice. They're both the embodiment of Aristotle's virtuous individual, who despite not being perfect, are still able to say and do just the right things right when they're necessary. That's why Sonic has been ruined, they've taken away that virtuous aspect of him but kept all of the edge, which is what makes him not work.

2:26 The scene where Gerald Robotnik is being executed and talks about the despair he felt when Maria died and how it festered into a desire for revenge and anger for the military has never left my memories. It's easily the best moment in all of the Sonic games' stories in terms of maturity imo.

Freedom Planet was the closest thing to a Sonic Game that I found myself enjoying since I was a child. The movement options are great and the levels are much better designed and it provides a much better learning curve for getting good. The writing is also not garbage. And the 3 playable characters play very different from each other and it feels almost like playing a whole different game to learn them.

While I disagree with your opinion on early Sonic games (and older hard games in general), I think you nailed it with the problems of modern Sonic; they try to make an spectacle out of every stage with minimal player input, and to reach that point they have to water down the gameplay so much that for the most part it feels like watching a video on a VHS player with a broken play button you have to constantly press on for it to play... or something like that.
@tahj4204 жыл бұрын
Your view of speed is really abstract here. People I'd imagine, enjoy speed because it is broken. Atleast in terms of combat. High speed is both defense and offense. High speed is water traversal. High speed is time travel. The obsession with speed is easy to grasp as to me it seems like being incredibly fast in synonymous with Divinity.

Mania has some of the best level design period. It was designed to reward skilled players and not have speed traps like the former Genesis games, the multiple tiered level design does not lock you out of a route as soon as you fuck up allowing you to easily switch between tiers if you build up enough momentum. 3&K was also like this to an extent. I don't think saying that all the classic Sonic games are shittily designed is really fair, Sonic 1 primarily has a lot of design flaws, but once the spindash was added and Sonic Team got a handle on how slopes work, it was all smooth sailing from there.

I think you need to try Mania out. It harmonises momentum well with interesting level design and is actually pretty great. It's a shame the 2D games don't resonate with you because thats honestly the core experience of Sonic. The 3D Sonic games have always been an experimental underdeveloped rollercoaster of quality with no proper focus.

oh i guess sonic adventure series heroes unleashed colors (kinda) and generations (without classic sonic) are underdeveloped then
@modeseven81004 жыл бұрын
@@vitorhenriquefarias8916 They really are, I'd say the adventure games definately have a bit more going on but they barely develop on their core gameplay and tend to branch out into other forms of play than go full ham and create strong meaningful challenges based on its core design. If you've ever heard of Baba is you, its a game with a simple premise which has the capacity to create more and more complicated scenarios and continuously teach the player new things about its design, many levels in. None of the 3D Sonics tend to do this, they often reach a challenge plateau then kinda fill out the rest of the space with alternating game styles than develop interesting challenges on using Sonic's versatile mobility. Heck some games like generations absolutely lack freeform mobility for a corridored rollercoaster style game. Granted, all those games are surface level fun and can be enjoyed and even played faster and faster with higher ceilings of play but I dont think they nessecarily test the players understanding of the mobility nor challenge it once they grasp it and always cops out by changing the gameplay.
@MatrixTheHedgehog1235 жыл бұрын
FUCK YES! AT LAST THE BEST TOPIC Gotta say I massively disagree with your assessment of the games. The turnover from getting hit and losing you momentum and jumping back up again is typically very short, and the rings system exists to soften the impact of mistakes as much as possible. Generally it's untrue that you need to memorise levels to get good at them, you moreso have to gain an intuitive understanding of Sonic's movement and learn to make split second decisions which consider multiple variables in a more unconscious, muscular way. It's really not that hard if you apply yourself in the same way you'd apply to any platformer.

"the early games can be fun, if you get good at them" Honestly, I think you should try out Sonic Mania. It's like the old games, but it adds a couple of things that help a lot to keep you momentum going, like the Drop Dash, or the really big thing that helps: the game is widescreen. You no longer need to get as good in a level to keep your momentum simply because you can see much farther ahead than you could in the old classics.
