For those who don't know "Why" life has the desire to continue living and reproducing; it's as simple as a lifeform without it would be highly unlikely to survive, propagate, and by extension, currently exist

the meaning of life is worship we are constantly doing it whether we admit it or not we set up little shrines in our homes to the things that make us happy and gives us meaning we have things we put faith in whether we like to admit it or not you could be the most hardcore atheist and still you do this so the only real question is why we do this? why are we constantly in a state of worship? why is that built into us? or if you believe in evolution why did that come about as a means of survival? is that a part of survival?
@saucepirate89705 жыл бұрын
We are insistent on perpetuation because our perpetuation provides us our existence. If it wasnt for my ancestors instance I wouldn't be here and the genetics that inform that perstistance exists in myself. It has nothing to do with some evolutionary goal to reach us as a higher species. We are just at an intelligence level where we are capable of thinking such things. But as a social species, our existence and with that our desire for resistance extends beyond ourselves and to our social unit. Through the increasingly expansive social connectiveness of our world, we are able to consider all of humanity in our desire for persistence. That is what you are observing and why we attempt to push the limits of science.

When it comes to why life exists at all, I think the the first forms of life might be just a random thing that happened from the chaos of the universe, and from there life decided to grow. I dont know why life happened to be built to reproduce or why life strives for it, so I dont have any theories for that, but I guess my stance would be that there is no reason for life to exist, it just happened. But when it comes to people wanting to have a meaning/reason/purpose for their lives, they can create that meaning. It's usually informed by people trying to figure out how to make their own lives better, and what people think would make their lives better can vary widely based on who the person is, as well as their environment/what resources they have available to them. The different "meanings of life" that people can come up with and the different flavors of similar ones are pretty interesting to me.

It's not really that complicated, we're here to breed and pass on our genes, that's it. The only reasonable way to look at the world is through a naturalistic lens. Any other philosophical notion of meaning is just a social construction as a means of avoiding the fact that we as a species are too smart for our own good. Embrace the existential dread that is life, or feel liberated by it. I think it's fucked up that people feel that we can only derive meaning from a spiritual influence. It doesn't have to be the case. I think the idea that there is no divine being dictating how we live to be very liberating. It is your responsibility to find your own meaning in life. Though, I was never raised religious, so the idea of seeking through religious meaning is still very foreign to me. Perhaps I can only think this way because I was never institutionalized into a cult.

The reason creatures strive to survive and reproduce is because if they didn't they'd die out. Randomly some would feel the need to prolong their species while others wouldn't, the ones who do end up passing that instinct to the next generation while the ones who don't stop existing. I don't know what initially started life but the reason humans are the way they are is just due to a massive amount of time in which beings that survive and reproduce do so and the small changes that occur each time they do while beings that can't/don't die off. Life is a fucked up game where the only way to continue on living is by causing pain and taking the lives of others and no matter what you do or how much you achieve you can lose everything in a second due to a random occurrence. My meaning for living is just to enjoy life and be happy and what brings me those things are drugs and media. We're so incredibly lucky to be born into this period of time with so much to comfort our lives, how frequently humans of the past suffered unimaginable pain from illness or brutal torture for being themselves by ignorant religious societies is horrifying so let's be thankful for the world they've built for us and continue our attempts at improving the quality of life for those born after us.
@mortesilenz22985 жыл бұрын
@@heart4179 I don't think people have a personal responsibility to improve society I just think people should be encouraged to do so so that hopefully society will keep improving. Also I didn't say doing drugs and living a leisurely life was the right thing to do just that it's the kind of life I personally find to be fulfilling, ironically drugs are what caused me to see beauty in life and to enjoy being alive when the vast majority of my life prior to that I was severely depressed, different drugs effect people differently and can be bad for some while good for others. I don't find any meaning in reproducing just for the sake of reproducing and for the most part don't care about prolonging our existence. I place more value on improving the quality of life for living beings than ensuring their survival. As for religion all I said about it was that the ignorant ideologies they spread and forced onto people are responsible for a large amount of the suffering people faced back then at the hands of others as well as holding back the advancement of society, I never claimed they couldn't possibly outlast others.
@mortesilenz22985 жыл бұрын
@@heart4179 Yep I agree with you there, I definitely think religion can be a good thing and have benefits on people's lives and teach them important things unfortunately it can also do the opposite and a lot of the dark and brutal parts of humanity's history were due to evil people using religion to control the masses as well as the prejudices taught in those religions. I only brought up the negative aspects of it because I was talking about problems that people in the past had to deal so I didnt see the need to mention that it can have good aspects as well, sorry if I was misleading.

It's not very hard to find the meaning of life. The meaning of life is to live a good life. If you want to go biblical, then looking Genesis to where God makes a covenant with Abraham. God tells Abraham that he shall have many descendants, as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sands on the beach. That these children shall form Nations. God tells man to be fruitful and multiply. I believe Digi is agnostic, but even he recognizes that people just like animals want to live and to reproduce.

And what's that for? I wish you defined the word "meaning" clearly, as it seems to be a word that everyone uses because they can get away from leaving its 'meaning' vague, so they don't have to think hard about what they are actually referring to. The idea of meaning (purpose, reason, significance (value, worth, etc.), etc. combined) and/or the meaninglessness bothers me because I have been and am being forced to do things that's ultimately and subjectively fucking pointless and aren't worth any attatchment at all, but I can't just pull the lever and stop this experience of pain and agony-either by stop existing or by changing myself in a way that I will no longer feel like this. It bothers me that "I" am apparently trapped in this stupid fucking body and mind, being surrounded by brain dead stupid humans who never question why they keep breeding new humans forcing them to live and die, yet I have no fucking body to blame this pointless torture, for there is no one person that caused everything by itself without itself being caused by something else. Parents? They were fucking assholes who never thought that the kid they were going to force to live could be a pessimistic nihilist who will hate everything just because they want fucking kids for they stupid selfish drives, but they didn't choose to become assholes. God? I'm agnostic. As for "escaping the planet" thing you mentioned, I HATE the idea in a way. I don't think doing something that has no objective purpose or value (the idea of "objective purpose/value" makes no fucking sense to me, because they cannot be not-subjective given how I and many others seem to define these words, but whatever) is a bad thing. But I HATE it when people think it's ok to force others do the worthless thing that they like to fo; i.e. procreation and living life. If you want to go to space and live in the mars, do it. Just don't think of populating the planet by making a bunch of kids and increase the amount of potential suffering. Cause, perhaps, just 1 person out of 100 might be unable to ignore the ever-so-obvious meaninglessness of this whole thing. That 1 person will suffer for nothing. And the rest of them might as well experience varying degree of suffering for different causes. Huh? What about happiness? What about the sense of acomplishment? You don't need them unless you do. Those are painkillers. If you don't need them in the first place, you will not want them. And there will be no one who needs and wants to be happy, if you don't make the person who needs it. It's just you wanting to satisfy the stupid sex/procreative drive. There's no one who asks you to create them, when they don't exist. When someone's born, they are forced to be born without their consent (cause "someone" who doesn't exist, let alone a little baby) cannot consent to anything. Some say that the idea of consent doesn't apply here because consent is for those who already exist, but then, why do you even value consent in the first place? Isn't that to prevent a situation where someone's forced to be in a situation they didn't ask to be in? Ugh. Morning has come. Time for bed.

I'm reading through this comments section and it's filled with edgelords that fall back to sociobiology, pseudoscience, and pseudo philosophy. If neither of those 3, then nihilism is the alternative. Genetics, and biology as a whole, is not an adequate explanation for life's meaning, nor should it be; if that's your answer, it rests on a devastatingly unprincipled categorical error. Keep the discussion of meaning and human experience outside of the realm of science.

@@SleepyMatt-zzz Because naturalism should be distinguished from the naturalistic fallacy. Ascribing purpose to natural processes and surrendering our conscious selves to them is detrimental. As far as metaphysics and ethics go, taking naturalism to its furthest end, separate from viewing it as a philosophy used to discern qualities about the natural world, is one step down the path of nihilism.
