The point of this video, in combination with my other Shaolin related content, is to attempt to paint the Temple as what it is: A complicated place with a nuanced history that's facing a lot of challenges these days. Although the internet isn't the best place for nuance, at least I want to try. There are people on one side overly idealizing the Shaolin Temple and on the other side you have people who don't know anything about it, slamming it endlessly. Look for people who dont oversimplify is all I am saying. 10 Things I Miss About The Shaolin Temple ►► kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3XWY2V3msmco8k My Life At Shaolin Temple ►► kzbin.info/www/bejne/jovYfIiGgtWWraM

To be honest, if you’re not Chinese, you likely won’t get into a real Shaolin temple just because of that fact. They do not like foreigners because foreigners (Most especially westerners) have been Abusing the generosity of the Monks for so long that these days they block the majority of foreigners no matter who they are. If you’re not Chinese, born in China, and you don’t speak fluent Chinese, then you likely aren’t going to ever be a part of real Shaolin. There are better people at better places though who will train you with more personal and individual compassion than the Monks too

It's normal to romanticize the past but it's important not to get trapped by it. Like you said, there were some experiences that weren't so good during those times that, upon further reflection, had you reevaluating your feelings towards it. BBC and the rest get it twisted because, as Ranton said in a different video, they don't outright lie to the media, but the monks in charge put on a bit of a show. Educational with Shaolin and hilarious/informative with game reviews. This man child is fantastic.

@@steelbear2063 yea, but in asia it goes to the point of being harmful Like if you have business you employ family and promote them regardless of their ability and it could be really harmful to other employee or just the business as a whole. Or police/politician or any other people in power give special treatment to criminal I'm on the receiving end as well so I can testify, I get ticket from ignoring traficlight as teenager, don't even have license. But I went basically with just a slap in the wrist, because I have aunt and uncle working for the police. I paid like 10 USD fine and didn't have to do anything else like going to court and the like. I also got my driving license easily once I come to age without any test cuz we bribe 50 USD lmao. I would imagine getting your license would be a nightmare as someone with some record no matter how light, and the test also take a long time as well on top of having to wait weeks to get the license ready, I got mine in 3 days, my friend took half a month to get his. Small stuff like that is fun as someone who benefit, but looking back and especially knowing it happen everywhere at any level it is quite concerning. This means a lot of people did not have the qualification necessary so the rate of accident or something going wrong is higher than it should be and so on. If a nobody like me could get away with so much, imagine what people with actual power could. Sad stuff
@rwsmith76384 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the honesty. I'm glad to hear that many problems aren't those with the temple itself and a lot can be blamed on modernization and 'progress' of the surroundings that has leaked to the temple as well as the unbelievable number of tourists. I think that the 'who knows who' is a serious problem, but if there were not such an influx of strangers, then nearly everybody would know more about who was who and it wouldn't be as much of a problem. Unfortunately, it seems that the Temple has to try to cope with this invasion/occupation in order to survive. I also think that trying to experience it for 'fun' is a mistake though a lot of us would like a peek.

Just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos. Love your game reviews, so f*cking funny. And I love the Shaolin videos because you give a view that's rarely seen and I myself love martial arts and wish I could have had the opportunity as a young man to train in some form but being a young black man in Tennessee, the dirty south, was not easy and I was a focused basketball player until very bad decisions took me to living the street life. Now I'm about to be 40 and have a 9 year old son and a 2 year old daughter. My son actually loves to watch martial arts movies and videos with me. My son has hearing loss in both ears, left ear is almost completely def. My question is can he still train and learn martial arts even with that disability, and I hate saying disability, so I call it an obstacle to overcome. I need the opinion of a expert, only if you have time. Thanks for all the amazing content and Happy Holidays to your family

Lots of people probably think the Shaolin way is the only way to reach a higher state/ highest state of "being" in all aspects of human ability physically and mentally/ spiritually. But it's all within you, I'm nowhere near it, but mentally I use to be. And that's when I had nothing and nowhere to be. And in having nothing and nowhere to be I found myself extremely grateful with what I DID have and then build upon that happiness and gratefulness by going places that would clear my mind even more and remember many moments where I would think to myself "I wish everybody felt like this" It's the Most random babble comment I know but Shaolin monks have their way and it combines all aspects of a higher level of being if that's what you are there for, but you can have your own way, too. :) Love your channel though man!

Although I chose music over martial arts 🥋 , performance anxiety was a big issue for me too. It’s easy to perform my best by myself, or w/ 1-2 close friends. With singing, if you add an audience into the equation, my skills declined significantly. My friends were often frustrated & disappointed. I eventually overcame it though, & performed 3-4x in front of 100-250 people.

With the exception of the first point, which is something I usualy experience due to living on an island, almost every other point very identical of my army training in the infantry, to a frightening extend even. As for the toilet thing...I feel you and I'm sorry you had to experience that. Great video, one of the most relatable. And thank you for giving me some closure on that chapter of my life, I feel like I needed to hear someone with similar experiences say that as well.

The dislikes are from the gweilo who could not get inside the Shaolin temple
@BlackSteel1205 жыл бұрын
The *stupid gweilo... As it is rather easy to get in touch with the temple to train... The only issues I see are money or health related... In 1 day of time I could get in touch with Mr Wang, a really nice guy, who answered in the same day I contacted him, answering all my questions and giving me the process to follow to enter the temple to train. He only asked for a generic medical report in order to know if I would survive the training...

As a Muslim I can assure you that isn't the case in my regard. And Zen Buddhism is certainly a "religion" that weaves its ways and practices into the fabric of the cultures in which it is assimilated. That's a huge reason we all admire it, as well as Kung Fu flicks. The reality of Kung Fu is even MORE interesting than all the movies made about it, both good and bad.
