Rap Critic I’m not sure about the ass shaking portion part. It could have been a beat switch up without the words. I really don’t like songs that actually tell you how to dance. It’s like brainwashing through auto tune.

I see what your saying about the misplaced Lauryn Hill simple but maybe the Lauryn Hill sample is the girl he’s talking to and he’s trying to convince her to let loose through the song. So if you look at it this way it fits pretty well.

Not really, esp. when the sample is saying the two lines over and over again. I love Lauryn but the sample is pretty repetitive. Not as bad as Started from The Bottom.

Let's be honest. This was meant to be a club banger. The "ass-shaking" breakdown at the end was a "call to action", and the chopped lyrics are common in the bounce genre.

Just to be clear, Drake did not produce the song. Murda Beats made the beat and then drake added his lyrics. So any clashing between the beat and the lyrics is a little more understandable. Edit: All I’m trying to say is that contrary to what RC seems to be claiming, Drake didn’t make the beat, so he might not be fully aware of the context of the sample.

Curtis Beardsley I didn’t say it was understandable, I just said it was more understandable. Obviously Rap Critic and Murda Beats are both very informed about the sample, but if Drake hadn’t studied the sample, it would be easier to make a mistake like this. RC kept blaming “Drake” for the clash between the beat and the lyrics as if he had also created the beat.

I see what you mean about Nice for What and wishing it was something else. I'll admit, this was the first Drake song in awhile I actually liked, but you're completely right about how it's a little try hard, and why it just doesn't work overall. Personally, I wish the song actually dealt more with the theme of women being nice... but you know, for what? Like why are they being nice, Drake? What sort of society do we live in that forces women to be nice? There''s a big answer to that "what" question and... well, Drake it's kind of because of you. My biggest issue with this song is that it doesn't even really tackle his past songs and expecting women to be nice and drop everything they're doing for him. And, yeah, I know. That's a huge ask, and we should critique things on their own merits and not what they could be. And this is one of his bests in a long time. Thanks RC! As always, your views are nuanced and greatly appreciated.

I had a love-hate relationship with this song. I love the sample, but at the same time I hate that he used it. Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor" is one of my favorite songs of all time and part of me wanted Drake to keep his grubby hands off of it. The sample is easily the best part of the song and almost completely carries it, and yet there's so little effort put into its usage. The only alterations made to the original was to pitch it up a little, and then rather than sample one or a few chopped up parts to make a new experience, a large chunk of it was just allowed to run on loop. The situation is almost a complete repeat of the sample of "Mary's Joint" by Mary J Blige for "Weston Road Flows" off the "Views" album. Meaning what incentive do I have to listen to this when I can just go listen to the original song, which is a vastly superior piece of work anyway?

3:45 I know the Wu-Tang references probably have no deeper tribute or meaning for them, but they're cooler than most people give drake for. The song is about how his love belongs to a woman, and so in the chorus he says "It's Yours". That section of the song than samples vocals from The Wu-Tang's "It's Yourz". The sample continues on "Own It". Also, the chorus of Pound Cake is a chopped up vocal of Timberland mumbling the lyrics to C.R.E.A.M

See, I think Drake keeps one-upping himself. First there was the best track off of More Life, Portland, simply because of the beat (but being the best track off of ML isn't exactly that hard of an accomplishment), and then God's Plan, which was decent, and then his verse and hook on Look Alive were pretty much awesome, as he carried the track (because I'm not sure why it's a Blocboy song), and here we are now. Nice For What is probably the catchiest song I've heard in a long time from this man. And then he released I'm Upset, so.. now we're back at square one. Anyways, nice review for a good track, RC.

It would seriously take some of these rappers just minimal time to research the choruses that they purchase for their songs to see if the lyrics actually have anything to do with what they're rapping about. Haha! This problem of artists or producer, just buying a chorus and tossing it in there when it has absolutely nothing to do with the actual content of the rap lyrics is an issue I've seen over and over again for ages. It's usually the producer saying, "That's catchy" or "That's nostalgic", "That'll be a good hook! It'll be an earworm!" but the hook has nothing to do with the content of the song, and in some cases is contrary to it. But in my opinion, it really... makes the artist look shallow and not very bright if they have this thing going on in their song that just... isn't the purpose of what the song is supposed to be saying. It's like if you were writing a poem about some subject and someone comes along, writes in several parts about a totally different subject that your poem isn't even about, and you publish it. It's jarring.

Perhaps the juxtaposition of the sample IS the message. Think about it: The song he sampled is sort of slow and somber, but here it is played faster and with a brighter tone, as well as a fun beat. The woman has gone from being in her feelings to being more fun and carefree now that she's over her breakup. That's why the lyrics of the song are OVER the beat. But I could be making a slight stretch here. Was going to also include something about a faster sample meaning moving on faster or something but I think this explanation suffices.

2:00 I will point out that those aren't Drake's lyrics, and it doesn't feel like he intentionally sampled the lyrics for the lyrics. He sampled that song to make a beat out of it, not necessarily because the chorus related to what he wrote about.

I thought that the sample at the beginning was to symbolize how back in those days women were always pining for the game praying for forgiveness. And when the beat kicks in it's like and now here's today where you have women who aren't afraid of being who they are and don't have to sacrifice their being as a person to keep up with the society.

Bruh. The Lauryn Hill part is by far the best bit. Maybe it doesn’t match with the lyrics but the sample is better than the lyrics.

The Big Freida and Lauryn Hill sample maybe it's contradictory but maybe it's the best way to describe real contradictory feeling. I see it like that...

Was that Letitia Wright in the video at one point? I know that one woman levitating at the end was Michelle Rodriguez, but I thought I saw Letitia in there. Also, was another woman in this video Jackie Tohn from that NetFlix show GLOW?

I love the idea of the women twerking as showing their sexuality to be one part of their complex personality, and not a reason to be looked down upon/labeled as "easy", "slutty", etc. It's so often assumed that women are "objectifying" or "exploiting" themselves when showing off sexuality, when really, the woman doing it may get off on it, lol. Agency. Yes.

The lauryn hill intro reminds me of a song by The Avalanches. "When i left you", i think. Not the first lyrics of LH, the ooo aaah part.

He did "Gotta make that jump" because it's reminiscent of New Orleans bounce music and how it's choppy and makes the song more "bouncy" for lack of better terms. And I'm guess they cut ass out because then the same vibe would be felt in the radio version instead of having 2 cuts in the phrase. However this is just a hunch. My best friend player N.O bounce all the time so I'm use to hearing this.

I get that, but I always thought that yes We love L Boogie, but I feel like they took a song that women relate to as a sad song of conflicted feelings. But in this case he switched it to be an empowerment song, first we (women) were singing it in despair, now we are singing it reflecting back on how silly it was to think like that in the first place. Now the Big Freedia sample. That was to pander for sure!!! Great job RC!!! Keep it up!!!
