I kind of think that Hotline Bling doesn't mean phone calls, it's the dinging and flashing notifications on his phone because he's following her social media and gets notified when she posts something like 'inappropriate pictures' or whatever he is ranting about. Still bling is not what it's called - more like blink because if the little flashing light that lets you know you have notifications (and also flashing lights on phones in hotline call-centres / switchboards?)

I love the implication (from 2019) that Adele can't be suggesting Toronto is a town where "nothing ever happens" because Rob Ford (who died in 2016) once existed. Not because Toronto is Canada's biggest city with a population of 3 million, but because Toronto once elected Rob Ford and his magical crack adventure to office. Love it!
@annegrey37804 жыл бұрын
also, random fact about Canada, it only has 3 cities with over 1 million people (there are like 2-3 more with over 1 million if you include commuters from other municipalities, but that's cheating). There are only 2 cities in Canada that have a subway (and they do not connect), Canada's capitol has *never* been in one of those 3 cities, despite Canada just decided to move their capitol city over 1300km one time for funsies (I'm sure there was an actual reason too, but I prefer to think it was for funsies). Canada literally got it's independence by just asking Britain for it. I mean, there were reasons why both sides would prefer that to war...it was more like two sides agreeing to a truce but just being very British/Canadian about it and wording it as a series of polite questions. but still, Canada technically got to be a country by asking.

For me, the biggest shortcoming of "Hello" is actually the lyrics. I think Adele's vocals are strong as ever, and while it starts out slow it builds up and delivers by the end. But I pay attention to lyrics, so it took a few listens to understand why everyone on social media was posting crying emojis and just couldn't even. Because I was initially distracted by banal and awkward lyrics that were sometimes too clever by half. "Hello from the other side"? Other side of what? It sounded like something I would have written when I was 12 cause it sounds like something a grownup would write. The only saving grace lyrically was a part Todd didn't like: "...to tell you I'm sorry, for breaking your heart. But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore." The sheer disappointment and sadness that he isn't clearly torn apart by it while she now is is kinda awesome. i think part of the reason I like it is because i don't think it is supposed to be the same guy as "Someone Like You" so I think he's not married, and instead she still wanted to get with him. The fact that he isn't still torn up by it isn't therefore meant as cattiness, but an admittedly self-centered disappoint that what they had is truly gone. Also, I've been the guy more than once, and subjectively for me it's kind of get a kinda nasty but human satisfaction about her breaking the guy's heart and him now being truly moved on when she changes her mind much too late. It's good for soothing wounds - so long as you don't let it linger. Not withstanding the last line of the chorus being oddly phrased, "Someone Like You" may not have been Shakespeare but I could feel the lyrics a whole lot more. Where "Hello" depends on the music and vocals, "Someone Like You" had a simple but still well-delivered story (and good music and vocals too).
@oof-rr5nf5 жыл бұрын
True! Someone Like You is much better (and still could destroy me emotionally probably). I was thinking the same thing about the part Todd did not like. While Drake sounds _sincere_ in his chiding of his former "good girl" (ughhhh gross), Adele sounds so defeated that it is clear that we are supposed to empathise but not sympathise - she is clearly still the bad guy here. Drake does not seem to be as self-aware.

I'm not so sure that "Someone Like You" and "Hello" are about the same guy (within the context of the narrative). They have similar themes, but I'm not sure they are meant to be the same story. Maybe they are. They could be. But there is also room for differences. For starters, "Hello" makes no mention of him being married or otherwise unavailable. The fact that he doesn't respond is what makes him unavailable. I like to think that it is a different guy and she does actually want to get with the guy, but he has no interest. There's a huge difference between a guy not wanting to talk to his forlorn ex-girlfriend because he's married versus not wanting to because he just doesn't want to get back with her. In the case of the former, he'd have obligation to not entertain getting back together out of obligation, no matter what he felt. But ifbhe is available and still turns her down, that means he really just does not want to be with her. It's a true and genuine rejection. It's much more poignant and dramatic. While "Someone Like You" doesn't really have a sense of emotional closure, it is where closure starts. He's married now, she says a bunch of nostalgic stuff, and its delivery is incredibly full of emotion. That can be the start of getting over him and healing. It works as a song about her still being hung up on her married ex. But if she's still calling 1,000 times the same, still married ex, now years after "Someone Like You," it's just embarrassing. It works much better as her trying to get back together with the guy and him shooting her down with silence. Of course, I like better as song doesn't itself say what the truth is. If wishes were fishes, facts don't care about your feelings, etc. But I think there is something to be said about it being more likely that Adele wrote a better song than not, so there's that ;)

I have to say that I still have feelings for somebody who I broke up with four years ago now. I was going out with her for six years and thought I would end up married. I'm reminded about a line in Citizen Kane where a character says he once saw a girl in a white bikini and now he probably thinks about her every day even though it's years later. It's not like I've tried to contact her, actually I think she got married a year after we broke up and lives thousands of miles away. Also I'm in a relationship at the moment that's making things better, but I can still totally understand where Adele is coming from. I'm just guessing Todd has never really had a relationship that felt really serious fall apart, which is lucky really.

You should all listen to LIGHTS' cover of this song. She has quite a knack for covering Drake songs acoustically. Actually, you should all listen to LIGHTS in general. She's a Canadian synthpop artist who never really broke through in America even though she really should have. If you want upbeat, creative, lyrically-sound, vocally-impressive, good-quality pop music, LIGHTS is honestly your best option.

The only thing that could save Drake's lyrics is if they were about a girl friend he cares deeply for that has fallen into serious substance abuse. However, I don't think Drake has the ability to have girl friends, only girlfriends.

funny that he uses "cop killer" to illustrate bad messages when that is morally and ethically the only correct thing to do

No it isn't. It's "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas.

0:56 - ngl, coming from 2024, I think when people complain songs “send a bad message”, it’s probably more that they think the message is “I, the literal artist who is performing this song, genuinely and sincerely think and feel these things” and nobody likes supporting terrible people (at least, if they really believe it’s terrible) But I digress
