I kind of think that Hotline Bling doesn't mean phone calls, it's the dinging and flashing notifications on his phone because he's following her social media and gets notified when she posts something like 'inappropriate pictures' or whatever he is ranting about. Still bling is not what it's called - more like blink because if the little flashing light that lets you know you have notifications (and also flashing lights on phones in hotline call-centres / switchboards?)

I love the implication (from 2019) that Adele can't be suggesting Toronto is a town where "nothing ever happens" because Rob Ford (who died in 2016) once existed. Not because Toronto is Canada's biggest city with a population of 3 million, but because Toronto once elected Rob Ford and his magical crack adventure to office. Love it!
@annegrey3780
@annegrey3780 3 жыл бұрын
also, random fact about Canada, it only has 3 cities with over 1 million people (there are like 2-3 more with over 1 million if you include commuters from other municipalities, but that's cheating). There are only 2 cities in Canada that have a subway (and they do not connect), Canada's capitol has *never* been in one of those 3 cities, despite Canada just decided to move their capitol city over 1300km one time for funsies (I'm sure there was an actual reason too, but I prefer to think it was for funsies). Canada literally got it's independence by just asking Britain for it. I mean, there were reasons why both sides would prefer that to war...it was more like two sides agreeing to a truce but just being very British/Canadian about it and wording it as a series of polite questions. but still, Canada technically got to be a country by asking.

In the original video I mentioned in the comments my own theory: That "Hotline Bling" is secretly a country song. It's about a guy feeling depressed and drinking a bit about his ex whom he used to have hot sex with about how she travels around and having a bad reputation. Sounds like every country breakup song on paper. A different beat and it would be a good country song.

For me, the biggest shortcoming of "Hello" is actually the lyrics. I think Adele's vocals are strong as ever, and while it starts out slow it builds up and delivers by the end. But I pay attention to lyrics, so it took a few listens to understand why everyone on social media was posting crying emojis and just couldn't even. Because I was initially distracted by banal and awkward lyrics that were sometimes too clever by half. "Hello from the other side"? Other side of what? It sounded like something I would have written when I was 12 cause it sounds like something a grownup would write. The only saving grace lyrically was a part Todd didn't like: "...to tell you I'm sorry, for breaking your heart. But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore." The sheer disappointment and sadness that he isn't clearly torn apart by it while she now is is kinda awesome. i think part of the reason I like it is because i don't think it is supposed to be the same guy as "Someone Like You" so I think he's not married, and instead she still wanted to get with him. The fact that he isn't still torn up by it isn't therefore meant as cattiness, but an admittedly self-centered disappoint that what they had is truly gone. Also, I've been the guy more than once, and subjectively for me it's kind of get a kinda nasty but human satisfaction about her breaking the guy's heart and him now being truly moved on when she changes her mind much too late. It's good for soothing wounds - so long as you don't let it linger. Not withstanding the last line of the chorus being oddly phrased, "Someone Like You" may not have been Shakespeare but I could feel the lyrics a whole lot more. Where "Hello" depends on the music and vocals, "Someone Like You" had a simple but still well-delivered story (and good music and vocals too).
@oof-rr5nf
@oof-rr5nf 5 жыл бұрын
True! Someone Like You is much better (and still could destroy me emotionally probably). I was thinking the same thing about the part Todd did not like. While Drake sounds _sincere_ in his chiding of his former "good girl" (ughhhh gross), Adele sounds so defeated that it is clear that we are supposed to empathise but not sympathise - she is clearly still the bad guy here. Drake does not seem to be as self-aware.

I'm not so sure that "Someone Like You" and "Hello" are about the same guy (within the context of the narrative). They have similar themes, but I'm not sure they are meant to be the same story. Maybe they are. They could be. But there is also room for differences. For starters, "Hello" makes no mention of him being married or otherwise unavailable. The fact that he doesn't respond is what makes him unavailable. I like to think that it is a different guy and she does actually want to get with the guy, but he has no interest. There's a huge difference between a guy not wanting to talk to his forlorn ex-girlfriend because he's married versus not wanting to because he just doesn't want to get back with her. In the case of the former, he'd have obligation to not entertain getting back together out of obligation, no matter what he felt. But ifbhe is available and still turns her down, that means he really just does not want to be with her. It's a true and genuine rejection. It's much more poignant and dramatic. While "Someone Like You" doesn't really have a sense of emotional closure, it is where closure starts. He's married now, she says a bunch of nostalgic stuff, and its delivery is incredibly full of emotion. That can be the start of getting over him and healing. It works as a song about her still being hung up on her married ex. But if she's still calling 1,000 times the same, still married ex, now years after "Someone Like You," it's just embarrassing. It works much better as her trying to get back together with the guy and him shooting her down with silence. Of course, I like better as song doesn't itself say what the truth is. If wishes were fishes, facts don't care about your feelings, etc. But I think there is something to be said about it being more likely that Adele wrote a better song than not, so there's that ;)

I don’t care for the artist or the song, but I think the title is okay. Hotline being slang for a phone (cell phones are personal and are therefore not unlike hotline phones, which exist), and bling referring to the device lighting up and making noise. It’s a little broad but it makes enough sense and I approve.

I have to say that I still have feelings for somebody who I broke up with four years ago now. I was going out with her for six years and thought I would end up married. I'm reminded about a line in Citizen Kane where a character says he once saw a girl in a white bikini and now he probably thinks about her every day even though it's years later. It's not like I've tried to contact her, actually I think she got married a year after we broke up and lives thousands of miles away. Also I'm in a relationship at the moment that's making things better, but I can still totally understand where Adele is coming from. I'm just guessing Todd has never really had a relationship that felt really serious fall apart, which is lucky really.

Drake is the Number 1 artist of the 2010's. I am not talking about if he's your favorite or not. He's like the voice of the generation today. Like how Frank Sinatra was to the 1940's. Like how Elvis Presley was to the 1950's. Like how the Beatles were to the 1960's. Like how Led Zeppelin was to the 1970's. How Michael Jackson was to the 1980's. The way Nirvana was to the 1990's. And what Eminem was to the 2000's. It's just, Drake just represents the 2010's.

Know Your Role Boulevard Mariah Carey was number one of the 90s. And Eminem is not Number 1 in the 200s he only had 2 number ones that decade. Drake is up there but he really only became huge starting with Views. I do t think he’s necessarily the number one artist of the decade
@knowyourroleboulevard7119

@@williamackerman5824 Not everybody has great billboard chart performance you know. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Smooth Criminal, Thriller, Every Led Zepplin song, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc are all great and historically timeless. More people would know Nirvana then Mariah. Hell everyone on the internet says that too. Just search up top artists of the 90's. Everyone almost agrees Nirvana is one. And they never had great chart performance. Eminem is the best selling artist of the 2000's. And he is the most subscribed artist of the 2000's on the internet. Hell he might beat Beibers record. 3 Months ago he had like 29M subs. Now he got 35-36Mill Subs. He was like the 6th most subbed person 3 months ago. Now he beat Taylor Swift and others. And is the 3rd most subscribed person. And he's gonna beat Sheeran in a month or so. And anyone will agree Eminem is the Number 1 artist of that decade. And Drake's been popular since 09. And he has a bigger impact musically on the decade than anyone else. Like how Cobain made it cool to have styles like his hair, grunge, and his oversized clothes, and popularizing ripped jeans. Like how M.J. made ot cool to dress colorful and have "hair" (80's term). And poularizing that Red Jacket. Drake makes it cool to wear sportswear, nearly $100-200 sneakers and making sure everybody has a hairline. And yeah this I have to say too, but he popularized trap and the Hip-pop/R&B with Rap lane of music. And he's the most streamed artist on Spotify. As a bonus he's had the most entries in the billboard this decade. He has the most top 10 hits on the billboard this deacde. He's one hit away from breaking the Beatles number of Top 10 records. Hell he already broke it in decase terms. Cause the Beatles were around in the year 1970. He spent 29 weeks on the billboard beating Ushers 2004. And who is even greater than him really. Adele, naw she represents nothing really. Bruno Mars. He's great but he is more pro 1980's then us really. Rihanna, nope. 90% of her hit songs are with featured artists. And Rhianna lost her edge from 07-12. And was more bigger in the 2000's. Today she's just "one of the other artists". Taylor is much bigger than her but not Drake. She mostly has an impact on girls. Drake impacts everybody. According to the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), Drake has passed Elvis, Eminem and Michael Jackson for total music sales grossing up to $218,280,000 in sales. No other solo male artist has even broken $200,000,000, Elvis is second with 191,000,000 and Eminem is next at 172,000,000. thesource.com/2018/12/07/drake-is-now-the-number-one-selling-solo-artist-in-america-of-all-time/ www.billboard.com/articles/columns/hip-hop/8465374/drake-scorpion-biggest-rapper-ever www.billboard.com/articles/events/year-in-music-2018/8488621/drake-top-artist-taylor-swift-reputation-top-album-2018 www.joe.ie/music/opinion-drake-important-artist-generation-589999 And Drake is one if the most overplated artists on the radio. He's already the biggest rapper of the decade. And Rap/EDM/Spanish are very poular in ths decade. And he's played on each genre as a mainstream headliner. And he just is really when you look years from now. You know the average top 3 musical artists of today: 3. Taylor Swift. Biggest female artist. 2. Maroon 5. Band of the decade.. 1. Drake. Just think about it for a while.

Know Your Role Boulevard Drake is the biggest current artist but again he only pulled away from the pack with views. His previous albums were not bigger than other artists at the time. And a lot of the stats you listed have to do with the quantity of music he releases. For the 2010s decade overall he is easily still behind Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, probably about neck and neck with Adele. Adele would be way bigger if she didn’t take 4-5 years to release. And for the 90’s I’d agree that nirvana is certainly huge but they’re definitely not bigger than Mariah. Like that’s a fucking joke. Everything Mariah releases shot to number 1 for a decade and she wouldn’t have even released her biggest hit yet. No other artist was even close to Mariah. Do you have any idea how many girls listened to Mariah in the 90’s and had her as a role model and inspiration. The 2000’s there was no artist that really dominated the entire decade so Rihanna from 2005-2009 will have to do.

My dad was born in 1965 and only was vaguely aware of Led Zeppelin. He couldn’t even name what songs they did until decades later. This isn’t uncommon either. Led Zeppelin succeeded because they released wide selling albums and toured relentlessly. They weren’t a pop singles act and many people really weren’t paying any attention to them at all. Sure they were influential and define what we think of with the decade of the 70s but they were really a band with millions of fans but not a band who ever really had enormous crossover success. That was enough but I don’t think we genuinely can predict this stuff accurately. Drake is definitely one of the biggest artists right now but I just have no idea how relevant he’ll be one day. Maybe more , maybe less. I just don’t know man
