If i May present an idea as to why 21 may be so monotone in a lot is supposed to show how hes became numb , after being exposed to all the violence drugs and misery that comes with a life in poverty for so that whenever he’s asked about things around that dreadful lifestyle he can only repeat this soulless vague lines cuz even if he wanted to respond in any other way he’s probably lost count of all these things that has happened in his (and many other ppl who suffer in this lifestyle’s) lifes.

I dont know if that was intential, but I think the "tired of it all" delivery of the chorus works perfectly in the context of the lyrics. He been through all of that "a lot" of times so he is tired of it, not caring anymore if the people doubted him, if he lied, if he shot someone etc. But I could be totally wrong, just wanted to throw that out there
@indistraction54145 жыл бұрын
i agree. the tired, monotone flow is borderline anhedonic when you note the utter lack of appropriate affect in referencing the good things that have happened in his life versus when he brings up the shitty things. he just can't muster the proper emotions to differentiate those experience.

The more I watch the music video the more I enjoy the song, also the lazy monotone flow from 21 actually sounds good here. He downplays the hardships he's gone through as he reflects... It makes him seem lime all the issues don't phase him as long as he's still here. Cole definitely is superior lyrically, but the last verse from 21 Savage was well written.

Somebody who is regularly exposed to traumatic situations for extended periods of time eventually becomes desensitized to that situation because it basically causes their basic survival instincts overtake any sort of complex emotionality. The dead-pan delivery of the chorus is actually really effective because it shows that 21 has been involved in so many horrible situations in his life that he can no longer respond to them with anything beyond basic acknowledgment, nor can he enjoy the rewards he has gained from those events. He is emotionally broken.

The song reminds me of a collection of letters from a WWI soldier to his wife (the name of the collection is escaping me). The soldier talks about twenty people being slaughtered in the same way that he might talk about getting a new pair of socks for the trench. The true nature of it isn’t meant to be an upfront bloody representation of war, but rather the mundanity and apathetic nature that it installs in you. By seeing this violence on a constant bases, Savage is just at the point in his life where nothing shocks him to revulsion anymore. That’s why I find this song infinitely terrifying on a psychological aspect.

The monotone voice really works in the chorus, it gives off the feeling he's so jaded by all the bad shit, that he can't even appreciate the blessings now that they've come around. Him using the same tone in all songs makes it hard to appreciate, but in this case, it was cool.

I was really disappointed with this review. I feel like Rap Critic kinda brought his preconceptions about 21 Savage into this song instead of listening to it as it is. I'm no fan of 21 in general, but his deadpan delivery totally fit the tired, exhausted tone of the song. It's the right stylistic choice, and whether it was a conscious decision or just a product of 21's very limited range, it works. Basically, Rap Critic said "oh, it's a 21 Savage song, so I don't have to give it a fair shake." and that's kinda really uncool. I actually agree that this is a 4/5 song, though. It's pretty good, but Rap Critic has a point that sometimes 21's lines aren't totally on topic.

Given what Savage talks about and what's been happening to him (along with, you know, how shitty the government is), it makes perfect sense for him to sound dead inside.
@Hashups5 жыл бұрын
you criticise 21 for having a repetitive chorus, even though plenty of other rappers (like j.cole, kendrick etc.) do the same thing, I feel like you're only bringing this up because you don't like 21 savage that much, but would be happy to ignore it on anyone else's. I'm not saying repetitive chorus's are a good thing but they can work and I think they do here. In the modern day of lyrical rap the chorus does not need to be as complex as the verse and can just show 1 clear message. Also 21 savage is pretty young and has a long way to go (time and skill wise) so I think you need to just give him some time and making overall judgements about him now would be unfair, as he does have some good qualities and may follow them all the way to being a great rapper, but only time will tell.

the nonchalant approach works perfectly in this song. he's been through, "a lot," and when speaking on it we as listeners expect something incredibly emotional and heart breaking, but we don't get that. we don't understand what it's like, hence why we listen to the lyrics for his story, but he's now unfazed by it all. he's seen so much that instead of giving us the expected tone, he delivers it in a way to let us know that he is desensitized to it. hence his blank expressions through the video, this is just everyday shit to him. I thought that was fairly clear the first time I heard it.

I think the monotone goes better with the negativity in the hook. That delivery that says you've been through so much shit that it doesn't even bother you. Like, getting shot, or being betrayed are these huge things, but if your life sucks that these happen "a lot", it just becomes "welp, some asshat shot me and I got blood on my good sboes. Mondays amirite?"

21 is probably the most odd horror style of rap. His delivery sounds like the artist is dead inside and his monotone delivery doesn't differentiate between the good or bad in his life conflating they all feel the same. His music sounds like depression mixed disassociation and that is kinda harrowing.

Eric Salazar True I feel like the modern generation of rap is simlar to Grunge. Grunge was a almost response to the previous era of rock. Alot of the melodic rap inspired by 808s and Heartbreaks is very much antithesis of the bling era.

I think the monotone delivery in the song is kind of fitting with like someone who is tired of it and down and kind of dead insisde which somehow fits the feel of the song, although I do somewhat agree with you, I just personally like it

21's delivery reflects his numbness to it all. Its not non-chalant, its exhaustion. I think is some of his other songs he can use the deadpan to be non chalant, but in songs where he's actually saying *something* it takes a different meaning.

Maybe simce he's talking about things that we'd think would make him emotional, the deadpan is to show us that he's had to bottle up his emotions and doesn't know what to do with them

idk why he gets so mad saying 21 doesn’t have enough energy like it’s not like he’s straight mumbling into the mic he just ain’t screaming i honestly prefer that kinda sound i don’t think it’s boring it’s just a nice calm sound

The non emotional flow works really well in This song. He’s numb because he’s gone through a lot of things so it’s hard to express emotion, which works even better when it’s about his family and the people that have turned their backs on him

"I am so smart I am so smart S-N-A-K I mean S-N-A-K-E" Let's see 21 Savage try and sample that Simpsons quote. I'm not joking, either.

Thotiana review coming next? I don’t like the song or really any of Blueface’s music, but it’d be super interesting to see your take on the whole “off beat” thing... even just in a “worst lyrics” episode or something like that.

My cousins’ friend came here with his parents and didn’t apply for citizenship when he turned 18. He got arrested for some stupid crime and got deported to his home country. That was back in the 2009. Im not surprised they picked up 21 savage, I’m surprised they haven’t deported him yet.

Its mad to think 21 Savage is English. Man should be talking about wetting ops and doing songs with Headie One.
