Given how war was glorified during the earlier eras like the German unification wars and Napoleonic wars, this was a war like no other that came before. An Era that was reshaped by the industrial revolution just years before and now with weapons like no other. The men went in thinking that this war is my time, my time for glory and honor. Everyone went in with glorious attire with golden finishes and proud banners held high; but it was the down of a new Era, a ugly one, an Era were there is no place for glory, it was the Era of Trench-Warfare. This song covers more than the soldier's thoughts in a battle, but his state of mind a few months after the war has begun. I would highly advise you have a look at the Sabaton history of each song you have seen. It is a discussion you might enjoy. If you are going to watch them, I hope you enjoy.

Great analysis. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors. Some people do not seem to fully understand or appreciate them… but you get them man. Well done! They never glorify War. They tell the true stories through their amazing songs. They glorify heroes and the people who bravely performed their duties honorably… they tell important stories of every Nation’s history without bias or judgement… and they do it in epic and masterful ways. There is no other band like Sabaton in the World today. They are very special… one of a kind. They are a very important and noteworthy band… especially in this day and age of so much garbage pop music and ridiculousness. You are definitely a part of the Sabaton Army now. 🤘🏻

I absolutely love the choir intro of The Great War, it's so epic and powerful! (Sabaton is also a band that makes me quickly run out of superlatives.) Recruitment propaganda never talks about the deaths and injuries of the comrades all around you, because that is one of the reasons for PTSD in soldiers. No matter how much training you receive, being actually fired at must be something else entirely. Thankfully I only got fired at with blanks during exercises... and looking back at one of them I would've been killed first, standing in the turret of a truck, firing an MG3 into the forest. Our ambushers did ask later who the gunner on the first truck was because I got them dead-on, despite them being deep in the forest in full camo with ghilli suits and everything. For more untold stories, check out Resist And Bite, about Belgian soldiers, Smoking Snakes about the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and the many songs about single soldiers like White Death and Ghost in the Trenches. Also, give the live versions a listen, then you hear the concussion blasts of the pyro and of course the crowds.

I would HIGHLY recommend The Last Battle. It is a great song about a story that doesn't get enough attention and deserves a movie made about it. I would also watch the Sabaton History channel about the songs you really enjoy. It gives much more information about the history behind the song.

The reference to "great war" is because the old military leaders considered war as a thing all young men should experience. The greater the war, the greater the "glory" they could achieve. It was seen as a "great" thing to do. And the fact that it was literally fought all over the place.

In a way, WWI was the war to end all wars. It was the growing pains that led into modern warfare. Since time immemorial, when we exchanged the sword, shield and spear for the single shot musket, there was one believed absolute; that the largest army on the battlefield had the advantage. The invention of the machine gun made having the larger army obsolete because it could mow down entire squads in seconds. Any and all attempts to cross the field were dashed because the field was constantly bombarded by long range artillery, making troops refuse to leave their trenches. With incompetent officers demanding more and more "big pushes" that resulted in massive casualties, troops were stuck in their trenches for months on end. This desperation for an advantage to take ground and advance the front line led to the creation and use of poison gas, flame throwers, tanks, planes, barrage balloons, etc. The old ways of fighting wars died in the Great War; horseback cavalry, single shot rifles, fighting the enemy in the open field by exchanging shots, etc. WWII is where we began to perfect warfare, for lack of better words.

Great War, the Title track from the Album Great War. But first, a little context as to how tensions got so high for a world war to become possible.(Only the big stuff cause I don't have 12 hours to go through it all & I don't know how big the KZbin text box is.) 1870, France Declares war on Prussia. Napoleon III wants the same might his uncle had. Prussia the beast that they were which had crushed Napoleon's French Empire was now alone & unifying Germany from the recently collapsed Holy Roman Empire. France wanted to stop this from happening as a unified Germany was a beast no European power could handle alone. With the threat France has shown, the final German states decide they can no longer stay out & join Prussia. With Germany now unified, Prussia humiliates France and retakes the Strasbourg area. Though they could have taken far, far more land if they had wanted too. Bismarck felt it would only sour future relations with other powers and lead to another war in the future which he wanted to avoid. (this is a lesson that should have been repeated at the end of wwi but was sadly not taken into consideration by those that decided) 1905. Bismarck invites the European powers to Berlin to discus the Scramble for Africa. Here they would decided how to split Africa to avoid any meaningless wars over Africa. None of the nations who's lands were being discussed were invited. Not even the Ottoman Empire who was also a European power but also the strongest and oldest power in Africa. The Ottomans lost about 30% of their empire and now had the English cutting off all land routes back to the capital from what is today called Libya. 1911, Serbians sees an opportunity. Montenegro & Albania just recently broke away from the Ottoman Empire. Greece & Bulgaria seem to want to do the same The anti Ottoman league & the Ottoman Empire go to war. The Ottomans loose. Bulgaria & Greece are free. A few months later. The newest European nation want's to prove themselves. Italy declares war on the Ottoman Empire & takes Libya. Bulgaria feeling like they got an unfair deal goes to war with Serbia & Greece. Then Romania steps down to deal with the Bulgarians & the Ottomans jump at the opportunity for revenge on the Bulgarians. 1914- The Great War begins... (But first, I need to go drive a kid to school. So this will be part one of two cause I don't want to have something happen & need to re-type all of this.)
@6th_Army3 жыл бұрын
Second half! Allow me to attempt to make clear how the nations were lined up. Russian Empire will protect Serbia, France will protect Russian Empire.(Entente) Germany will defend Austria-Hungary.(Central Powers) Italy, the United Kingdom & the Ottoman empire are Neutral. But the UK will defend Belgium. 1914, Europe is akin to a room full of exposed explosives waiting for the spark to ignite it all. June 28th 1914. Serbia strikes. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to Austro-Hungarian throne was killed by a Serbian group in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary sent their demands. Serbia had 1 month to pay or there would be war. 1914, July 28th. Serbia refuses to talk, instead are preparing their military. The Balkan Powder Keg lives up to it's name and the Great War begins. 6 of 7 continents are involved. Most of the combat is on the eastern front between Germany, Austria-Hungary & the very unstable Russian Empire. But on the western front, France unveils a new weapon. One that would later be banned worldwide. Gas. August 23rd, Japan joins the Entente and quickly takes all of Germany's Pacific Colonies. Germany disliking the trench warfare that developed on the western front declares war on Belgium to avoid trench warfare. Britannia was now in the fight. The Common Wealth eager to join the fight rushes to Europe. Australia, the last continent was now involved. It was now, a world war. The media relaying only the tails of glory from the front on each side even going so far as to censor the Christmas Truce of 1914 which all nations on the front apart from Canada participate. The Ottoman Empire, seeing that both the UK & Russia are distracted. Join the Central Powers and strike. Eager to retake what was stolen from them years ago. They foolishly failed to consider that Russia would defend it's south and that Britain would protect the Suez. 1915, February 19th Naval admiral Weston Churchill's plan for the first major naval invasion in history at Gallipoli in an attempt to cut the Central Powers in half is put into place.(Sabaton has a song about this called Cliffs of Gallipoli) May 23rd Italy joins the Entente and quickly takes South Tyrol. (Even to this day, this area in Italy still sees resistance to the Italian occupation over 100 years later) 1917 Germany announces it will sink any ship going to Britain and warns the neutral nations. Germany sends a telegram to Mexico. Fearing the USA might join the Entente. They tell Mexico that they would help Mexico retake their lands the USA took from them in an earlier war if they join the Central Powers if the USA joins the Entente. March 8th Germany sends Lenin to Russia which sparks the Russian civil war taken Russia out of the war. April 6th, the USA joins the Entente. April 9th, Britain impressed by the Canadian troops performance allows Canada to command it's own army. Their trial by fire as their own force would be to take Vimy ridge. When three other armies have previously failed. They succeeded with minimal losses and prove they are to be feared. 1918 November 11th the ceasefire is called. the war is on pause. though the fighting didn't stop until 11:11 in the morning. The last to die being a Canadian soldier. 1919, the fight long over. The peace conference to decide how the Great War would end. Though it wasn't called the "Great War" anymore. It was now called the War To End All Wars. The Entente take most of Prussia from Germany, the north eastern part of Austria-Hungary and the western part of Russia, their former ally and create a new nation. Poland. Belgium was given a part of German land & some of Germany's colonies in Africa. France took the Strasbourg area. The Ottoman Empire & Austro-Hungarian Empire were disbanded. Italy was given very little of what it was promised. Japan was given about half of what it was promised. Most controversial of all however, Denmark. A neutral nation was given German land. By the end of the war, Russia, Germany, Italy & Japan were all very displeased with the result. This would of course lead to the second world war. 1914 to 1919. 15-20 millions dead almost half of them civilians. The war was over, a far deadlier threat rose up behind the scenes. The Spanish Flu had waited, grown between the chaos & extremely poor health conditions from the war and was ready to strike. 50 million would die across the world. Only through heavy quarantine was it finally beaten. I tried to stay away from parts Sabaton has made songs about. So it looks like no much happened. But much did happen, I just want to have something to do later on. Though I did mention Gallipoli. It being so important made it hard to leave out. I also only did the majour events too.

This song released literally the next day after i saw them live in Krakow at the festival i already talked to you about once, I was kinda really hoping we'd get a secret preview but alas.
