“I have seen it all… but none will hear my story.” 😞 We may not ever know their names… these brave unknown soldiers and heroes… but Sabaton is making sure that we will always remember their incredible sense of duty, honor, and sacrifice… in truly epic and amazing fashion. Man. They tell these stories with such great skill, purpose, and emotion. Another classic from Sabaton. Great song! Awesome reaction JoJo!

I don't know much about this one, but apparently what happened was, on December 16th, 1916 at 5 AM, known as White Friday, a series of avalanches hit both Austro Hungarian and Italian barracks and basically buried them with everyone inside. People reported afterwards that both Austro Hungarian and Italian troops fired artillery at the loose snow on the mountains to cause avalanches on each other's side. The total death toll is unknown, but approximately 2000 soldiers died and a dozen civilians. Many of the bodies were never found. Some are being found nowadays with the ice on the mountains melting more and more due to climate change.

Some reports put the death toll at almost ten thousand dead in total, the only deadlier avalanche in history is the 1970 Huascarán debris avalanche which resulted in over 30,000 dead as today still the single deadliest avalanche in history
@suntiger745
@suntiger745 2 жыл бұрын
I think those never found is also why they sing about the spirit seeing the battles come and go down below. Because the bodies where never recovered, in a way the spirits of those soldiers on the mountains saw both world wars. It’s also why we see both WWI bi- and tri-planes, and WWII fighter planes.

Good heartfelt reaction as always. I love the song too as it hits you in the core. Some facts; White friday occurred on the Italian front in WWI. An avalanche struck Austrian and Hungarian barracks on Mount Marmolada killing 270 soldiers. Other avalanches the same day struck Italian and other Austro-Hungarian positions, killing hundreds. Some say both sides deliberately fired shells into the weakened snowpacks in an attempt to bury the other side.

is worse, the fact after the FIRST avalanche Both Italian and Astro-hungarian forces shell the mountains tops provocking a chain of avalances, in the Aftermath of "White Friday" there were more than 10000 deaths of Soldiers and Civilian Becoming the Second worst the second-worst avalanche-related disaster recorded in history
@leechowning2712

The mountain is very inaccessible, so even times where they had a good idea of where the bodies lay, it is hard to recover them. Of the 270 who died in the first event, only 40 bodies were found at the time. Because the mountain is above the freeze line, the bodies that still lay there are fully preserved as they fell.

The glacier where this happened has been melting, revealing more and more bodies, fortifications and baracks. the position the soldier is lying in in the video seems to be based off a photo of a soldier they found in that same position in the melting snow. some of the bodies are so well preserved that you can still see their hair and eye color.

This is why I honestly view WWI to be deadlier than WWII. It was an evolution in warfare that was evolving and changing faster than we knew how to fight and adapt. The use of machine guns did away with the centuries old tactic of both armies marching out onto the battlefield, and the desperation to gain ground led to the creation of deadlier instruments of modern warfare; long range artillery, tanks, flamethrowers, poison gas, even planes were used to strafe the trenches. And all this did was add to the desperation to achieve victory by any means necessary, even if it meant starting avalanches.

Some songs to look into by Sabaton: Winged Hussars (Siege of Vienna), Attack of the Dead Men (Third defense of Osoviecz Castle and horrors of chemical warfare in WWI), Pillars of Wisdom (T. E. Lawrence/Lawrence of Arabia and the Arab Uprising against the Ottomans ), 82nd All the Way (Sargent Alvin York), and To Hell and Back (about soldiers suffering from PTSD, focused on Audie Murphy who wrote the poem this song is based on). I watched the Sabaton History episode on this today, this mountain fighting seems like it was even more of a brutal slog than a lot of the rest of the western front. Soldiers clinging to the sides of these mountains, fighting for the heights and peaks so they could fire down upon their enemies, small passes and choke points held stubbornly by a few soldiers against huge numbers while both sides have few supplies for any offensive action. Even some mining and counter mining to place bombs underneath areas too heavily fortified to attack. A fight on a much smaller scale than the western front, but equally brutal and harrowing in its own way.

The Song is based on this event From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia White Friday occurred during the Italian Front of World War I, when an avalanche struck Austro-Hungarian barracks on Mount Marmolada, killing 270 soldiers. Other avalanches the same day struck Italian and other Austro-Hungarian positions, killing hundreds. According to some reports both sides deliberately fired shells into the weakened snowpacks in an attempt to bury the other side. An accurate estimation of the number of casualties from the White Friday avalanches is not available. Historical documents suggest at least 2,000 victims among the soldiers and a few dozens among civilians.[1] The date 13 December, marked Saint Lucia, a commemorative religious holiday practiced by the majority of Italian Catholics. Though the occurrence of avalanches in the Dolomites Mountains took place on a Wednesday in 1916, the term "White Friday" was used to coin the disastrous day.[2]

That's one of the less known fronts of the Great War, what this is about specifically has been mentioned already, maybe there should be mention of the fact that something between 2000 and 6000 men where killed by the artillery caused avalanches. The fact alone that we don't know exactly should hint at the fact that most are still *there* . The *Alpine Front* was a particular insane theatre of war with entire mountains blown skywards all on a very narrow front of snow and cliffs and rocks. The later Field Marshall Rommel made his name here in the Great War and while weather was always a particularly tough enemy in a static war such as the World War it is said to have been especially insane in the high altitudes of the Alpine Front. Add to that the fact that all sides had specialized mountain troops to deal with this it was a particularly insane theatre, even for something as insane as *the Apocalypse of the Old World* ... Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Another incredible song and story this time about unknown heroes that never came home. That's why I love Sabaton so much it's not only the stories that we know but they sing about those we don't know, and now those heroes who either have a grave but no name on it or those heroes who have no grave where they can be laid to rest, but are buried in unknown places where they are lost to us or entombed in ice and snow where they stay unfound. It's such a concept they brought with this of someone trapped and forgotten, left only to watch as one war ends and another one occurs. Loved it from the snippit they revealed but was just in awe with the full thing. Honestly your point about the guitar solo I hadn't considered but I can definitely see it now! A few recommendations if you're willing to hear: - Cliffs of Gallipoli: it's one of their older songs (from 2008) but I feel like it's required for an Aussie - Attack of the Dead Men: From their previous album (about WW1) honestly the atmosphere it sets for a horrifying moment in WW1 is fantastic (their live performance of it is amazing) - Swedish Pagans: It's a classic for Sabaton (and a running joke of being requested during concerts) a honest head banger like Carlos Rex.

For some reason I haven't been a big fan of these newer Sabaton albums since Heroes (it's my favourite with Carolus Rex) but Christmas Truce and Soldier of Heaven really hit different. I love them already and I'm so excited for the album. I almost teared up when I listened the Soldier of Heaven for the first time. These songs have that 'something' in them that was missing in the albums after Heroes, but I can't quite grasp what it is. Bismarck had the same feeling too, and I loved it instantly.

I don't know if there is a place where I can post my suggestions for songs, but I would love for you to listen to "Cliffs of Gallipoli" by Sabaton. It's a song about the Anzacs in WW1 when they storm the beaches of Gallipoli in the Ottomen Empire (Now the country of Turkey) where, sadly, a lot of them died. After WW1, the leader of Turkey said ""Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace." and it's such an sad story. But this was a great reaction, man! Maybe I'm a bit late, but I do have my reasons, haha! Have a great day, dude!

This song is actually really bad ass tho. This is about Italian soldiers in ww1 calling in artillery on themselves to crush the entire enemy forces with an avalanche. It’s sad but also extremely noble and inspiring.

little of the history for this one: white friday/a force of nature too strong sent from above: Dec 13 1916 a series of avalanches struck both sides through the course of the day killing thousands of soldiers and civilians it is beleaved the opposing sides deliberately triggered some of the avalanches to burry the opposing side Blood Mountain: Col di Lana a mountain in the Dolomites attacked repeatedly by 26 Italian divisions with heavy loses they took the mountain on Nov 8 1915 and lost it a day later due to heavy loses and not being able to mount a strong defense so the chorus sounding triumphant when he says I won't return to blood mountain makes a kind of sense as he's celebrating his freedom from what had to be a horrible place to spend your last days this song is like anything dealing with the unknown dead of war it can't help but be an emotional wrecking ball which puts it right beside En Livstid I Krig for gut wrenchers

If you want an experience a little out of the ordinary, I would like to recommend a great song from an unfortunately very unknown band. They are called Virgin Black and comes from Australia. The play some kind of metal, with doom, goth and symphonic elements to it. They have a very special vocalist, and most of their music has a religous theme. I don't really care about religion of any sort, but I still love them. Not all somgs are great, but the ones who are is really something else. The song I would like you to at least listen to, maybe with a cam recording it just in case it hits you in the heart, is Museum of Iscariot. It features one of my all time favourite guitar solos, played by a chick with great emotion. It is the first solo starting at about 2.09. The vocals are also great on this track.

No one notices the passage of time in the music video, when you see the planes in a dog fight, they are from WWI, then when the last chorus lines hit a Messerschmitt BF 109 rises behind the drop behind them, he was there so long he saw through WWII no one notices it ;-;

If you like history metal, I recommend you Aces High, Passchendaele, The Longest Day or The Trooper from Iron Maiden. They are all amazing and talk about historical events. Good video as always :)

I immediately came to think of the caroleans dying in the swedish mountains during the return march from Norway, in minus 20 degrees, 1718-1719. Many of those ill-dressed soldiers never got a proper burial. There's unrest for you.

I think it was symbolism there were also Dogfights happening in Swiss Alps in WW2. Those WW1 bodies were never recovered as WW2 planes flew over. and whoever was shot down in WW2 suffered the same fate

They didn't die for nothing. They died for what they believed in. Be it conviction, belief, their countryN or simply for each other, those lost in battle die for something. To say or imply otherwise imbues dishonor upon them and a shallow dishonor upon yourself. Do not insult the dead, lest they remember and visit you.
