A full analysis on the music video for Pt. 1: The kidnapped individual was a 'defendant' in a 'trial' with the psychotic Ren accusing him and acting as Judge/Jury/Executioner. Ren's character, through the song, goes on to explain the individual's crime: being part of a money game - a twisted game where people are divided and suffering for the sake of wealth. People who are willing to exploit their peers get ahead, and other are forced to do bad things for survival. Each time he gets close to exacting punishment and killing his victim, he stops to continue explaining more ways we twist our lives for that wealth. He even symbolically draws eyes on the head sack to signify that the victim isn't blind to it: the captor has 'opened his eyes'. He has no excuse and deserves this punishment of death. Finally, with one final attempt to do the deed, Ren's character realized the futility of what he's doing. Looking in the mirror, as per the lyrics, he is also part of the money game. And so, he puts aside his holier attitude and burns himself to death instead. As he said, as assuredly as the whole world turns while playing this game, the whole world burns as well.

Great explanation and a big thanks as many people are not sure how to interpret the message. I immediately got the drawing of the eyes on the hood sack to mean that Ren has opened the hostages eyes from his “wilful blindness” to the evils of participating in The Money Game. One of my favourites!

I’ve always looked at it as Ren is the oppressor (or oppressive system…the top of the money pyramid), casually terrorizing a faceless victim of the system. The oppressor gives his victim eyes so that he can finally see the truth, and the final moment before he kills his victim, he has a moment of hesitation…maybe even guilt…and decides to end himself instead.

That's how I take it too. I do like his idea though about it being him lecturing the money game. Then he opens the eyes of the institution but then the institution just keeps plugging along when he started playing the guitar again. Then he considered burning it all down but realized it was futile and so killed himself. I still think it's what you said but I do really like that idea. Better than my take even.

Me too. I think he realizes that everyone deserves a voice, so he humanizes the victim by drawing eyes on the sack. He can finally see that he's just as much a part of the problem as anyone else.

As a bass player who went to music school in New Zealand, we had to attend rhythm section classes ... part of the class involved an exercise where we would team up with a drummer and the tutor would put on a click and play it through the PA ... he would then ask us to play a groove to it but would intermittently mute the click for different amounts of time to see how far we had drifted.. the collective click we were hearing... was an amazing experience whenever we could come back on the beat after unmuting!

Ren addresses this on money game part 3. But what I've been learning throughout my life and in part due to thought provoking nature of Ren's music is that Ambition and Passion in what you do and in how you life is part of being human. You need something to drive you, to make you keep moving forward, to continue working on your things and in yourself, but you need to balance this part of you with Compassion and Love. To strive to do more and be better, to continue striving towards your goal and work on bigger and bigger things, but also to take a step back and look at the world and at other people. You can get as much money and power as you want, but what does it mean to have that when you stand alone at the top. For me being truly human means being Ambitious to get as far in your life as you can while also cultivating love and sense of community around you. To work towards being able to provide not only for yourself and your loved ones but also being compassionate to everyone else around you, we all have our struggles and our victories and standing at the top knowing you've been unapolagetically yourself, but also help as many people as you can to grow and become better versions of themselves than they were yesterday. Humans have strived and managed to evolve due to community, due to people banding together and working together, and that's when we shine, when we accept that we are all different, we all have different ideas and strengths, and all of that is okay, if we have different ideas then it means we can share them and discuss them, and from there ideas grow and transform. But when greed overtakes compassion we polarize and divide each other we all lose, We lose different ideas that could spark innovation we lose eachother and our communities, and in the process we can also lose ourselves and what makes us humans. And this is why i believe Ren has a really important place in music today, to provoke us to think outside of the box, that there is no true black or true white, our lives are filled with different shades of different colors, and that's what makes life worth living, to strive to be unique and think for ourselves, to grow from all our life experiences no matter how good or how bad and in the end learn and experience as much as you can while giving it back to community and to next generations

Great guest and reaction! Like majority of Ren's songs, extremely thought provoking, particularly the lyric: 'When did freedom become a reason to hate? A way to justify a racial slur or insult we make'. It is a very important principle, but comes with huge responsibility. For example, you shouldn't shout "Fire" for a laugh, in a theatre that may cause panic and a stampede. Ren poignantly references Germany's pain, where they have strict laws making it illegal to share N*zi images, where similarly referenced clothing, Holocaust denial, bans of public displays of same flags, insignia, uniforms, slogans etc are rightly banned., Yet in the US, the First Amendment limits the role of government in restricting speech. Result? Appears to be an ever increasing and open display of those very "freedom of speech" ideologies that America fought so very hard (with allied forces) to defeat in World War 2. His Money Game I & 2 are deep, really deep, can't wait for 3!
