@jameswalker68786 ай бұрын
To me, this song epitomizes the look and feel of the 80's techno sound. A lot of artists had these funny outfits and hair-dos, with the synths and weird drums. But, I think this is the best song of that decade! The lyrics to me indicate the girl was an attractive alien and they were trying to abduct him. Love it.
@stevehamilton88246 ай бұрын
The band was part of the NEW ROMANTIC era of music that included many bands, like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, ABC and others. This was a banger in the clubs and a constant rotation on MTV. It is as iconic as it gets in the early 80's. The unique look and hair garnered a lot of attention but the band overall had some incredible music - "Wishing", "Space Age Love Song", "The More You Live, The More You Love". This song has the most amazing bass groove and synth sounds. The band is from Liverpool, England. Their name A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS was inspired from another bands song, a band called THE STRANGLERS and the song is called "Toiler of the Sea" about being shipwrecked with the lyrics being - "We ventured overland / Fought with the aliens / The young ones used their hands / Pointed the way to a flock / A flock of seagulls!” The STRANGLERS were pretty big in the UK but faired okay in the states. They had a minor hit with the song, "Always the Sun" but their big hit in the UK is called, "Golden Brown". So check them out as well.

According to the band, the name Flock of Seagulls came from a song by the group The Stranglers. During a concert The Stranglers played a song called Toiler on the Sea, which has the lyric "flock of seagulls". One of the members imagined that their lead singer was pointing at him. "It was like a sign from God," vocalist and leader Mike Score said, "so that was our name." Btw, the hairdo comes from trying to copy David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust hair (but trying to make it taller). When they were working on their hairdos, the band's manager pushed down on Score's hair so he could also see the mirror - it gave him the signature look, the fans loved it and the Flock of Seagulls hairdo was born.

@AJ17_5 ай бұрын
The hairstyle started as an accident. The band were in the West Indies for some shows, and Mike, the singer, was hogging the dressing room mirror doing his hair. The bass player, Frank, tried getting Mike out of the way by pushing down on his head. The middle part of Mike’s hair flattened, but the sides stayed up.. Their manager was then yelling at the band to get on stage, so there was no time to fix it. So Mike had to go out looking like that. But it got a big reaction from the crowd so it’s stuck around for a while.

I remember in school the kids who were fans of new wave, and were wearing their hair like that would get relentlessly bullied and made fun of. I was into rock and metal, and we were called "Freaks" in school. You also had "Ropers" who were into country, and "Preppies" who were into pop music. I play guitar, bass, and drums, so I just like good music, so there was also new wave that I enjoyed. This song is among those. I just didn't wear my hair like that. When I got into street and ramp skateboarding though, I did sport a Misfits "devilock" hairstyle (short hair, but really long bangs that came to a point, worn over the front of the face).
