To me, this song epitomizes the look and feel of the 80's techno sound. A lot of artists had these funny outfits and hair-dos, with the synths and weird drums. But, I think this is the best song of that decade! The lyrics to me indicate the girl was an attractive alien and they were trying to abduct him. Love it.
@stevehamilton8824

The band was part of the NEW ROMANTIC era of music that included many bands, like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, ABC and others. This was a banger in the clubs and a constant rotation on MTV. It is as iconic as it gets in the early 80's. The unique look and hair garnered a lot of attention but the band overall had some incredible music - "Wishing", "Space Age Love Song", "The More You Live, The More You Love". This song has the most amazing bass groove and synth sounds. The band is from Liverpool, England. Their name A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS was inspired from another bands song, a band called THE STRANGLERS and the song is called "Toiler of the Sea" about being shipwrecked with the lyrics being - "We ventured overland / Fought with the aliens / The young ones used their hands / Pointed the way to a flock / A flock of seagulls!” The STRANGLERS were pretty big in the UK but faired okay in the states. They had a minor hit with the song, "Always the Sun" but their big hit in the UK is called, "Golden Brown". So check them out as well.

I love that version too. When you are expecting to hear a longer song, it's disappointing when you don't. That is one of the things that I don't like when channels react to videos instead of studio versions. A lot of videos have shorter versions of songs.

According to the band, the name Flock of Seagulls came from a song by the group The Stranglers. During a concert The Stranglers played a song called Toiler on the Sea, which has the lyric "flock of seagulls". One of the members imagined that their lead singer was pointing at him. "It was like a sign from God," vocalist and leader Mike Score said, "so that was our name." Btw, the hairdo comes from trying to copy David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust hair (but trying to make it taller). When they were working on their hairdos, the band's manager pushed down on Score's hair so he could also see the mirror - it gave him the signature look, the fans loved it and the Flock of Seagulls hairdo was born.

I have seen this band live in the last year and a half or so. The lead singer is bald but is so cool and the crowd goes wild when they play this song and space age love song. Iran was one of the most prominent songs that launched MTV. They were one of the few videos that was available and MTV played it once everyhour. Making it a hit but also it served MTV with programing. The video itself was made in just a couple of hours on a shoestring. With a turning table and some tin foil.

@AJ17_
@AJ17_ 5 ай бұрын
The hairstyle started as an accident. The band were in the West Indies for some shows, and Mike, the singer, was hogging the dressing room mirror doing his hair. The bass player, Frank, tried getting Mike out of the way by pushing down on his head. The middle part of Mike’s hair flattened, but the sides stayed up.. Their manager was then yelling at the band to get on stage, so there was no time to fix it. So Mike had to go out looking like that. But it got a big reaction from the crowd so it’s stuck around for a while.

Anything that you've ever seen that reminds you of their style in music dress and videography is all original to the Flock of Seagulls And when this video came out people thought they were super freaks and had never seen anything like this. @@martinyozzer1232Paul started playing guitar when he was 10. He could play other instruments as well (drums & saxophone). So though he was the youngest, he had the most musical experience. Before AFOS, he was in a band called Visual Aids. After he left AFOS in the fall of 84, he took a whole year off & didn’t do anything as he was dealing with personal issues (dealing with addiction, recovering from a nervous breakdown brought on by the stress of constantly touring & the pressure of fame). He didn’t even touch a guitar. But he decided to get back into music. He played in several other bands throughout the 80s into the early 90s (one of those bands also included Frank Maudsley), but none of them had the success AFOS did. In the mid-90s, he switched to playing mainly acoustic & did freelance & odd session work.

One Friday night he and I plus a few friends were at his place (he lived with his sister and brother in-law). We were listening to music and drinking the BIL's beer while they were out. This song was on the record player and we all danced to it. While dancing someone knocked a can of beer over, it landed on all the other records that we had been playing earlier. We ended up with only this song and it got played over and over for about a hour or so. We were so pissed (meaning drunk for the none Aussies) we were convinced the beer soaked records were ruined. There are a handful of albums/cds/ cassettes/8tracks that I remember exactly when I first heard the song and that I went directly to a store and I bought it instantly. The memory is still fresh. That's how impactful this song was when I first heard it.

I remember in school the kids who were fans of new wave, and were wearing their hair like that would get relentlessly bullied and made fun of. I was into rock and metal, and we were called "Freaks" in school. You also had "Ropers" who were into country, and "Preppies" who were into pop music. I play guitar, bass, and drums, so I just like good music, so there was also new wave that I enjoyed. This song is among those. I just didn't wear my hair like that. When I got into street and ramp skateboarding though, I did sport a Misfits "devilock" hairstyle (short hair, but really long bangs that came to a point, worn over the front of the face).

This also was a big hit in the Netherlands, and a typical example of what pop was all about in the early 80's. Including the short but great guitar solo's, the drum support, and ofcourse the way they look. The typical 'never mind the ozon layer' hairspray looks.

🎵 They got the synthesizer when they went to record the album. Then, they reworked their song to feature it. 🎵

The '80s were so diverse. The decade started with the end of disco, the came the second British Invasion and the German mini-invasion, and ended the decade with hair metal and rap. 1982-1984 is my sweet spot of the decade. If you played GTA, you know "I Ran".

This song was very popular and was on just about every song compilation album in the 1980s. I feel like I heard about 85 remixes of this song back then. I know I had a CD with 3 version of this song and 2 versions of Space Age Love Song, which is another good song of theirs. Wishing ( If I had a photograph of you) is another one worth reacting to. The Proclaimers are from Scotland.

This was their biggest hit though equally as great are the songs Space Age Love Song, Wishing, and The More You Live The More You Love, most all of their music is good. Mike Score is the keyboardist and Ali Score (his brother) is the drummer, they did most of the writing.

One of my favorite songs from the 80s - on a personal note, I broke my foot while performing this on guitar back in the day - long story.

Being a teenager in the 80s in the UK was a special time, the music was off the scale and then moving into the 90s with rave, techno and Britpop gives me so many happy memories.
