One of the most memorable concerts of my life in 1978. I was a 19 year country girl and hadn’t been far from home. My then husband got tickets to ELO’s UFO Tour. The stage was set up like a space ship. Suddenly all the lights started blinking and smoke started bellowing out from around it and the top started rising. As the top to the space ship rises a platform is also rising from the center of the stage and Jeff Lynne and ELO emerge and perform s show of a lifetime. It was incredible!!! I just can’t describe how amazing it was to be there. I’m so happy you have discovered what is truly one of the best bands ever!! Jeff Lynne is a musical genius…😊

The amazing thing is that this was produced using analog equipment, NO digital equipment at all. Something else not mentioned is the cover art. This was a double album, so the cover opened up like a book, and there was an awesome piece of artwork done on the inside. That doesn't happen anymore, there's no artwork with a download. Not a bad song on the whole album, and it's a damn double album.

After not hearing ELO for decades, then hearing them again, they ABSOLUTELY have a signature sound. No one sounds like them. Even hearing Olivia Newton-John sing Xanadu recently, I was like: she's singing ELO slides and string lines; sure enough, it was written by Lynne and ELO.
@owlnswan40162 күн бұрын
Only time I can think of where Jeff Lynne wasn't the lead singer with the rest. Olivia and ELO sounded great together. It made sense for her to sing one with the group to bring the whole soundtrack together in that way.

They have a signature sound that is easy to recognize, but you have to have listened to enough ELO to pick it up. I don’t think he has listened to enough yet. The Traveling Wilburys and Tom Petty album that he produced also have a similar sound.

My husband and I saw them live in Baton Rouge, La. in 1978. Their music and light show was fantastic! Jeff Lynne has called "Turn to Stone" one of his favorite songs, saying "It’s just so primary and simple, but yet very evocative. I love the shuffle beat." Lynne has also said "There’s a part in the middle where I talk super fast" (rap part). I just felt like it needed something simple in the middle of the song. I often used to put a funny little piece in a song just in case I get bored with it. I’d go, 'Well, maybe this is going on too long. I’ll think of something daft to put in there."

From my teens I loved ELO . That was in the late 70’s . 4 years ago E L O came and did a concert in my home town England . I was blown away at the pure talent and his voice was still strong . As the night went on and the sky got darker the space ship they had above them on stage started to light up ,the space ship was huge . Looked absolutely out of this world by 9pm . I do love that you do stop a song and talk about it . Especially when you get excited about the old great classics 👍 x I do now have more of an appreciation for the 70’s music , more then back then and come to release I was definitely blessed to be part of the disco 1970’s .

Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. Truly one of the most important people in the history of popular music. I don't think that's an exaggeration. Yes, his sound owes a lot to The Beatles, but everyone stands on the shoulders of giants, and I honestly think he found room for improvement and used it. His music is so deeply layered, so well produced. And it came from the 70s, but helped to shape the 80s.

Can I tell you a little bit about those of us that were born in the late 50's: We heard our parents music when we were babies i.e.- Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald et al. Then we were young kids and The Beatles hit the U.S., which led to the British Invasion and then into the psychedelic era in the late 60's, Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Who, the Stones, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, The Byrds et al. The decade came to and end with a big thud with Beatles breakup, but here comes Elvis back, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Carol King, Elton John, Eric Clapton, along with Deep Purple (in their prime), Black Sabbath, et al. Then came the Steely Dan's, ELO's, Eagles, Pink Floyd (at their peak), Fleetwood Mac, Bob Segar, the Beatles individual careers and a ton of great acts that what today would be a great run but there was so much talent they kind of got pushed to the side. And then, Disco, that's a whole other sad story. So when you see some on here or wherever get a little too big for their britches and puff their chests about "we had the greatest music, blah blah blah", take a second and think about what we got to listen to growing up into our adulthood. Pretty damn good music that spanned almost 40 years that we got crammed into a little over a decade of listening, so yeah, we had an embarrassment of riches to hear, and that isn't to brag or say it's the only thing, but you must admit, it was stuffed with a whole lotta great music.

My Mom had grown up in the 50's with music by the Everly Brothers, the Platters and Paul Anka and by delivering me at 20 and my brother barely 13 months later, just as Beatlemania was hitting America. Suffice it to say that she had other things to keep track than the music scene in the 60's and 70's. When, in high school from 1976 on, I started to build my musical taste and my Rock record collection, the group that got her reconnected and craving current music again was ELO. I lost her this past sunday. I played ELO songs back to back, in her hospital room, until her last breath. My mother will forever remain in my thoughts and ELO will be the soundtrack of my souvenirs...

It was so great to have so many bands who Owned their space in the music world, each with a unique style that was GOAT. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ELO, Rush, and others, each sound very unique and not som AMA cookie-cutter artist-of-the-week. It is awesome that younger people can tie into these bands and the music is just as awesome for them as it was for us on first listen. ======== ps: Listening to the Future? The 'Time' album is all about that, about 2095, and there is a song on it about falling in love with "Ciri" basically that is punk metal, "Yours Truly: 2095". ELO did a punk metal song about falling in love with your tech toy back in 1981. Listening to the Future.

This was my favorite band growing up. The first album I ever bought was ‘A New World Record’ which came out two years before ‘Out Of The Blue’. I never saw them in concert when I was a kid. I was just 14 when this came out. However, I had the pleasure of seeing Jeff Lynne’s ELO in 2018 and just last year as well. Now almost 61 years old, Jesus Christ, how did I get so old, I have seen literally hundreds of concerts. These two shows were some of the best. This song is not easy to play live. When they pause the song in the middle and sing the acapella part at accelerated speed, they nailed it both times I saw them. If you are new to this group, I recommend you checking out their stuff. My favorite song is ‘Evil Woman’. He has so many good songs, but this is one of those songs everyone needs to hear; it’s that good. I’m gonna feel stupid if you’ve already reacted to it, but hey. I had to say it. I just don’t know if you have reacted to that one yet. On this album, ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ has become their biggest hit. Check out the song list on their concert tour. Every song destroys. There are two many to mention here. I think there are KZbin videos of the whole concert. ‘Telephone Line’ comes to mind also. Paul McCartney is a huge fan of Jeff, who wrote every one of their songs. He is just a musical genius, as you will discover should you wish to hear more of his music. I love to see the younger generation discover his music. He did it all by himself. Wrote the music and lyrics for guitars, bass, drums, piano, synthesizers, and a ton of strings. Most of the band members play a string instrument. You have one more chance to see him play live before he retires. He will play a couple more shows in the UK and then he is hanging it up. If you have the time and money to go there, it would be worth it. The crowd was blown away the entire show. Have I talked him up enough yet, lol? Anyway, like your reaction. Keep doing your thing. Edited again: So I just found your reaction to ‘Evil Woman’ - (Live). I’m a fan of live songs, but I think you’ll have to hear the studio version of this song first to get the authentic sound. Please watch and listen to the album version. The live version uses guitars where the synthesizers are supposed to be. It’s amazing.

Jeff Lynne is a genius. He regularly worked with the Beatles and he created the band The Traveling Wilbury's. A true musician, writer, singer, and collaborator. I have a lot of respect for this man. Everything he did with ELO had impeccable production.

ELO was one of the most incredible production bands of the 1970s. Picture this on the playlist right after Styx and Boston and right before Queen and Kansas..... I recall this playing at a high school dance in 1978, picture the lights. There has never been a band like this since.

Out of the Blue LP 1977. My 3rd year of teacher's college. Two years before I got married. ELO is beyond epic. It makes me so proud to be a baby boomer!!

Jeff Lynn was a producer before he started his own band he produced all of his own music. He has songs that he played every instrument and just layered them all on top of each other I believe it was his last studio album. I just saw him here in October at 80 years old he still sounded awesome. You need to do telephone line live at wembly stadium so that you can see what the light is all about in their name watch for the spaceship!

Hey, I appreciate your perspective. I get a lot of insight into your experience. I know 80s rap, but I know it's grown so much since I listened, so thank you for continuing to share with us.

Melody, melody, melody! Melody is everything, melody is enduring. Songs that hold up 50, 60 years...all have melody and hooks that stick in your brain.

This is the music of my youth.....in 1980 they came close to where I lived. I just got married that summer (now we're married 44 years). First concert we went to was ELO. Guess who THEY opened for? Hall and Oats. Our best concert together. Hands down.

When we heard this is in the 70s, we didn't think it sounded like the future. I think it's just been a long time of digression. Long enough that some never knew.
