Chicago originally had three singers --- Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and Terry Kath. This is Terry, who was also a fantastic guitar player. He passed away very young in January 1978, and the band was never the same after that.

Cetera was a big part for many years until the new producer pushed him towards his solo career. Pankow kept them alive, but without those two voices plus Peter's Bass and Terry's guitar, they've never been the same. I quit buying albums after C17 or 18...

Now you MUST do Blood, Sweat, and Tears w. David Clayton Thomas. Spinning Wheel or Bless the Child. LOTS of brass. "Make Me Smile" is a song written by James Pankow for the rock band Chicago with the band's guitarist, Terry Kath, on lead vocals." They were from Chicago and started as the Chicago Transit Authority until Chicago (the city) told them they couplen't use that, so they just shortened it to Chicago. Released 1970, the year I graduated.

The band "Chicago" has a huge catalog of music from starting in 1967 through touring today. Terry Kath singing (lead guitar/vocals) on this song had a deep, soulful sound, white Peter Cetera (bass guitar/vocals) was higher pitched and Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals) in the middle. All 3 men shared singing lead vocal on different songs. Only Lamm is still with the group, among two other original group members.

QUESTIONS 67+68 (CTA album, CETERA vocal, heavy brass). 4 .SATURDAY IN THE PARK (Chicago V wood) (LAMM vocal) SIGNATURE TUNE + exactly the kind of tune you described you wanted to hear! 5. FEELIN STRONGER EVERY DAY (Chicago VI CETERA vocal)

the song & lyrics were written by the trombonist - James Pankow. this song is part of "A Ballad for a girl from Buchanon", consisting of 3 songs - all written by the trombonist, on the album - Chicago II. Kath is the lead singer - harmonies/background vocals of Peter Cetera and Robert Lamm. Kath's vocals, low/gravelly sound and soulful - he was often referred to as "the white Ray Charles". The brass section consists of trumpet and trombone; their woodwinds guy plays sax and flute. Cetera (bass) and Lamm (keyboards) were the other singers for the band. The horns, woodwinds and keyboards players all went to music graduate schools - they know how to layer music and compose. They called themselves "The rock group with horns" and mix rock/R&B/Jazz with some classical leanings. The most successful rock group of the 70's - had more top 10 hits in that decade than anyone. Over 40 tops 100. The 2nd most successful and long-lasting American group of all time - only The Beach Boys have sold more albums/earned more/lasted longer. Had several Grammy nominations - won one for "If you Leave me now" (1976) The success of that ballad made way for future music directions of the band - especially after Kath's death, with Cetera singing most of the love ballads. In 2015 Billboard ranked Chicago as #15 rock band of all time. Chicago is in Rock Hall of Fame , and the 3 songwriters of the group - Lamm, Cetera and Pankow are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

If you haven’t done “Introduction” yet, try it out. It is the first song on the first Album, Chicago Transit Authority, from ‘69. It truly introduces this band into existence. It was written by Terry Kath who is the guitarist, the Ray Charles sound-alike singer from “Make Me Smile” and the soul of the, at least, first 8 albums (all worth review, imo). Terry died in ‘78. Peter Cetera is the bass player and the voice of ‘80’s Chicago. Digging what you’re doing. Thanks

Love this song! I'm from Chicago, and I saw them in concert twice. The first time was in 1973 at the Chicago Stadium with Terry Kath and Peter Cetera and the second time in 1992 on a double bill with the Moody Blues without the two of them. I thoroughly enjoyed both concerts. And BP, to answer your question, yes, they are from Chicago. Five of the seven original members were either born in the city or a surrounding suburb, and the other two moved here with their families at age 8 and 15. I actually grew up in the same Chicago neighborhood as drummer Danny Seraphine. I agree with everyone who recommended "Colour My World" for a reaction. Terry is the lead singer on it also and it's a beautiful song which I think you will love.

@TheCkent1005 күн бұрын
This song was from Chicago's second album. The version you played is the single version. The album version is part of a seven song cycle known as the "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon". The seven songs are: "Make Me Smile" / "So Much to Say, So Much to Give" / "Anxiety's Moment" / "West Virginia Fantasies" / "Colour My World" / "To Be Free" / "Now More Than Ever". The full length "Ballet" runs for almost 13 minutes, far too long to be placed on a 45 rpm vinyl single, which has a run time limit of 5 minutes. The single version was an edited version that combined "Make Me Smile" with "Now More Than Ever". The lead singer on "Make Me Smile", "Colour My World" and "Now More Than Ever" was guitarist Terry Kath. Robert Lamm did the lead vocal on "So Much To Say, So Much To Give". The other songs were instrumentals. The songs were written by trombonist James Pankow in an attempt to win back his ex-fiance that was attending college at Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia. You may notice the spelling difference between the name of the Ballet and the town that the college is located in. That's because the record label messed up the spelling when they put it on the album. The pronunciation would also be different, with Buchannon being pronounced Byu-cannon, and Buckhannon being pronounced Buck-hannon. To this day, the members of Chicago still pronounce it the way it should have been labeled on the album - Buck-hannon.

You're talking the Terry Kath era. He was the guitarist who did the solo at Tanglewood in 25 Or 6 To 4. Terry is singing lead on this song. As for the horns, there was a trumpet, sax and trombone. Yes, they were from Chicago. Their name was the Chicago Transit Authority after the subway system but the city of Chicago found that too confusing and asked them to change it. Anyway Terry accidentally killed himself with a gun he thought was empty and that ended the Terry Kath era. The record company forced them into a mellow, love story type of sound.

Chicago was the first active band that I really started obsessing about as a young teenager circa 1972. I had heard some songs on the radio, but in 72-73 I started buying albums with my lawn cutting $$. Their first 3 albums crazily enough were all DOUBLE LPS with fold out covers. They were a little more expensive so I think I bought the newly released Chicago V first. It had the huge smash hit single SATURDAY IN THE PARK on it. Then I went backwards and eventually got the first 3 albums. Chicago put their iconic script logo on every album with different looking artwork for each. Chicago V was the "wood" album. I finally went to see Chicago in 1976 with a group of HS friends. What a great concert and great memories. Hearing that brass section live was a treat. Just 2 years later, lead guitarist and one of the 3 lead singers TERRY KATH (who sang this song) died due to a self inflicted gun shot. There were conflicting stories as to what happened, but most likely drugs or alcohol were involved and it was listed as an accident/carelessness I think, although there were rumors about Russian roulette. Very sad. After 1978 they were never quite the same, although they had started moving towards more ballads and "pop" songs in the late 70s. In the early 80s Peter Cetera, the bass player, dominated most of the hit singles, again more ballad heavy. So the best Chicago imo was from CTA to Chicago X, roughly 69 to 80. But Chicago has carried on for a long time with the 3 piece brass section and keyboard player and lead singer Robert Lamm. 4 of the original 7. Even with the changes and the death of Kath and loss of Peter Cetera to solo, they continued to be a very good live band. I saw them at least 3 more times in the 90s and 2000s, one show a double bill with Earth Wind & Fire, which was great, and the last time they played the entire Chicago II album including this entire Make Me Smile suite, and they did justice to the album, but I missed KATH and CETERA.

Have you done Saturday In the Park? That's a feel good song.

You're hearing the greatness of Terry Kath! The other guy with the high pitched voice was the bass player Peter Cetera, who had his own successful solo career later. Chicago was incredible, especially while Terry was alive

Jimmy Pankow is the trombonist (Still!) and is a dynamo on stage! So much energy.

I graduated from high school in 1971, this was my favorite band. The addition of the horns with a band that could have stood alone put them over the top. I guess you're listening to the Kath era Chicago, though I've never heard it described that way. The band definitely changed after Terry Kath died. That's probably the Peter Cetera Era, although Cetera was there from the start.

This was Chicago's first big hit song that put them on the map. The name you were trying to come up with is Peter Cetera.

Maybe??? But I remember their first record songs when they were sort of still CTA, Does anyone really know what time it is AND The beginnings. Both played heavily in my NYC Markey. And of course the radios played Saturday in the park to death.😊

@@Joseph-f9m7s Saturday in the Park didn't come until Chicago V. But yeah, Beginnings and Does Anybody Really Know.... both charted pretty high.
