My mum had this song figured out when it came out in the 80’s and told me to listen closely to the lyrics and we both had a good laugh. Black Pegasus, they used to say if you “bopped” you’d go blind to prevent the youth from “bopping”.

As a little girl growing up in the 80s, I had no idea what the song was about. Singing it at the top of my lungs. Good thing my mom was oblivious. She had no idea either. It’s a total 80s bop though.

"She Bop” by Cyndi Lauper is a song from her 1983 debut album, She's So Unusual. The track is often interpreted as a playful exploration of female sexuality and empowerment. The lyrics discuss themes of sexual freedom and self-exploration, using euphemisms and playful language to convey the idea of enjoying one's own company and desires. The chorus, which repeats the phrase "She bop," serves as a catchy, upbeat declaration of independence and confidence in one's sexuality. The song reflects the broader cultural shifts of the 1980s, where discussions about female sexual agency began to emerge more prominently in popular music. Overall, “She Bop” can be seen as a celebration of self-acceptance and the joy of embracing one's sexual identity, all wrapped in Lauper's signature quirky and vibrant style.
@edwardblair40966 сағат бұрын
The chorus can also be seen as conjugating the verb "bop" as if it were a Jr high school grammar exercise. I find that aspect amusing.

Phenomenal reaction! At around 11:20 she sings “if we don’t stop, we’ll all go blind”. Then towards the end she’s wearing dark glasses because she’s gone blind and cannot see the hat and cane being tossed to her. Also, kind of a blooper… when the waitress (played by pro wrestler Wendy Richter) brings the food to Cyndi’s car, the milk is chocolate. When Cyndi steps out of the car, the milk is white.

I was a teen at the same time - & there was a RUMOUR about what the meaning of this song was, but it wasn't more than that to us girls anyways. We didn't catch on to the lyrics - AND back then, not many of us had radios with clear enough sounds to make out ALL lyrics. Next you need to react to Cindy Lauper (Goonies are good enough) this video is full of wrestlers from the 80s and the song was used in the Steven Spielberg movie Goonies. PS if you want to see & hear a really interesting version of She Bop then watch the rock group Gwar doing a live performance version of She Bop on (The A.V. Club).😍😎😉😁😙🎶🎵🎸🥁🎤 Also try the Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night song, "I Drove All Night" is a song written and composed by American songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and originally intended for Roy Orbison. Orbison recorded the song in 1987, the year before his death, but his version was not released until 1992, & the video for the song starred Canadian actor Jason Priestley of the TV shows Beverly Hills 90210. Cyndi Lauper recorded the song and released it as a single for her 3 album A Night to Remember. Her version became a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1989 and was also her final top 40 hit on the American pop charts. Lauper still regularly performs the song in her live concerts. The song has also been covered by Canadian singer Celine Dion, whose version topped the Canadian Singles Chart and reached number 7 on the US Adult Contemporary chart in 2003. Please Please try all 3 versions thanx lots!

@Slane5837 сағат бұрын
This is my first time hearing this song and I picked up on what she was talking about instantly. Especially when she referenced going blind. Because adults would always say "stop doing so-and-so or you'll go blind." This is a fun song. You should give Good Enough a listen, it's not naughty like this one though. It's another Cyndi Lauper song but it's from the Goonies sound track. I feel it doesn't get as much love as a lot of other Cyndi Lauper songs. :)
