So much more than a breakup. "Left standing in a lurch, at a church where people are saying, 'My god that's tough, she stood him up. No point in us remaining.'" He was fixing to get married and his bride was a no show. Then to add to his pain, no one stays to comfort him.

You're right but what I don't understand is that so many Artists like Raymond(Gilbert) have so mny hits,in this case,50 years ago and yet,let's be honest,no hits for 40+ yers so what happened to tat talent to have resonating hit records?
@brianparker66314 күн бұрын
@@Isleofskye I think it may be that any musician has a few great ideas in his/her head that are steadily crafted and perfected over time...until they are "discovered". After that, the pressure is on to produce more material quickly and the quality gradually drops. Loads of band and artists have a great first album...but then there is the difficult follow-up that doesn't quite meet expectations. Does that hold water?
@Isleofskye13 күн бұрын
@@brianparker663 Yes, Brian to a fair degree although you might think that if they are that creative, at some point in the future they might start having hits ir, at least, a hit again. It could be a lack of motivation once they made it but, again, why would that stop the creative process? @_

The song is perhaps a bit more problematical considering the mood of people today and the hint of an inappropriate relationship. Although O'Sullivan has said the relationship in the song is actually platonic people today will still take it the wrong way.

Like this song, Clair has a beautiful melody.
@OriginalLictre18 күн бұрын
The story in the beginning wasn't just a breakup, it was the bride not showing up at the wedding, and the guests saying "It's tough that she stood him up, but there's no point in us remaining". Sounds like the guests walked out without offering any meaningful support. It's a number of personal tragedies, adding up to an anthem of depression and desertion.

"Alone Again, Naturally" speaks to universal experience--a now timeless classic from Gilbert O'Sullivan.

I think Gilbert wanted this song to be simple and clearly understood. Sometimes, singers sing very well, but you need to look up the lyrics because you can't understand a word. Lol. We could understand every word with his beautiful Irish accent. The music itself was full of loneliness, mournfullness and asorrow. It makes my heart ache. The pain of the loss of a friend, a pet, a spouse, a child, and your parents.I'm 61. I've lost them all. You almost need to reach a level of acceptance that it is your natural state of being. My Dad died October 19, 2023. My Aunt (Mom's only sibling) passed in January 2024. My poor Mom who will soon be 83. She feels she no longer has purpose. All her contemporaries are gone. That must feel so lonely. ❤ 😢😢😢❤ No one will read this, but it's okay. You are really never alone. I love you all. Im just another human sending out love to everyone and everything. ❤❤❤❤

It wasn't just a breakup. She left him standing at the alter and the crowd, as they were leaving said, "my God, that's tough, she stood him up, no point in us remaining. We may as well go home, as I did on my own....alone again, naturally". This was one of my favorite songs back when it came out, and it still is. Raymond Edward "Gilbert" O'Sullivan is an Irish singer-songwriter who achieved his most significant success during the early 1970s with hits such as "Alone Again", "Clair" and "Get Down". His songs are often marked by his distinctive, percussive piano playing style and observational lyrics using word play. In 1972, O'Sullivan's record sales surpassed ten million worldwide, and he was named as the number one male singer of the year. Peace out.
