Hey there man! You bet that Judas Priest are still around, and better yet: they’re still insanely popular. Their two most recent albums were both #1 in the charts all over the world - not sure how they did in the US, but I think they did pretty well there too. Their album ”Invincible shield” actually came out in the spring of 2024 so it’s still new, and if you check out the lead single ”Panic attack” you’ll find out that they’re still doing it the ”Painkiller” way after all these years - and well! Lyricswise you don’t have to worry about these guys. Some of their titles may look suspicious at first glance, but on further investigation, you’ll always find that it’s just Rob Halford being clever and making you work a little to get the actual message. Unless the lyrics are just about the joy of being part of the heavy metal community - he’s written his fair share of those too. Some of my favorite lyrics of his include ”Savage” - about the cruelty of conquering and enslaving indigenous tribes - and ”Electric eye”, that’s about actually being a spy satellite gathering all of our secrets without us even noticing. This guy is not just a good singer, he’s got a way with words too. Yeah, that court case you mentioned … Here’s what happened. In 1985, two young guys from Nevada, Raymond Belknap and James Vance, shot themselves. The former died, the latter was horribly disfigured and died years later. They both had psychological issues, had substance problems and came from real dysfunctional families - poor guys. But their families insisted that the real reason for them shooting themselves, was that they had just been listening to Judas Priest’s 1978 ”Stained class” album. The original claim was that the song ”Heroes end” encouraged suicide - which only a brief glance at the lyrics showed was not the case. The claim that eventually made it to court, was that the words ” do it” could be heard if you played one of the other songs BACKWARDS. Even crazier, that song was not even a Judas Priest original. It was ”Better by you better than me”, a cover of a 1969 song by one of the early British heavy metal pioneers Spooky Tooth. So the case, after it finally ending up in court in 1990, was dropped after six weeks. "It tore us up emotionally hearing someone say to the judge and the cameras that this is a band that creates music that kills young people," Halford admitted later. "We accept that some people don’t like heavy metal, but we can’t let them convince us that it’s negative and destructive. Heavy metal is a friend that gives people great pleasure and enjoyment and helps them through hard times."

This is 24K pure heavy metal, without any impurities. This song is the quintessential heavy metal manifesto, no sub-genres, this is the real deal. Judas Priest were one of the pioneer British bands that created the genre back in the 70's. They crafted what it may be considered the milestone, the germinal stem of the genre, the absolutely legendary "British Steel" in 1980 (their sixth album). It contains some gems that I have considered for many years as the blueprints of the heavy metal sounds, in particular "Rapid Fire" and "Steeler". Finally after a decade, precisely in 1990, they re-crafted the new standard with "Painkiller". They are still very active with a new album and touring all over the world with two different guitar players. They parted ways with the blonde one, K.K. Downing, some years ago and unfortunately Glenn Tipton, the one that plays that crazy solo had to leave because of Parkinson's disease. He kept playing as long as he could but he had to surrender in 2018. Rob Halford, the singer, also known as the "Metal God", is now 73 yrs old but his voice is still incredible.

Judas Priest is the very definition of heavy metal. The first true metal band. Sabbath made it heavy, Priest made it metal. The Stained Class and Sad Wings of Destiny albums are 2 of the most important and influential rock albums of all-time. It literally started one of the biggest genres in rock music. You mentioned sounding like Iron Maiden, yes it does. But its the other way around. Maiden sounds like Priest. Priest did it first. Just about every major metal subgenre you can find a track in Judas Priest's catalog that is the precursor. Priest did it first and did it better. Painkiller was Priest showing the younger thrash metal bands that the old guys could still go toe to toe with them and do it better. Check out their live set from the US Festival. It made him believe in the next generations carrying the metal torch! And BP, you was spot on with the lyrics! Nicely caught!

Why? It's on every rock compilation. It's their attempt at a pop song. They have 19 studio albums comprising around 240 songs and Breaking the Law is far from the most interesting of them.

When I saw Judas Priest Rob Halford (the singer) came to the stage astride a huge chrome mechanical lion. Definitely heavy metal.

The term you're looking for is "anti-hero." The Painkiller is an anti-hero that is depicted on the album art for the album this song appears on. If you look at the album art, then listen to this song again, the full meaning will become clearer. God bless!!

The song is 35 years old. The band went through a complete overhaul on this album and a new drummer. I went to there 50 years of touring show a couple of years ago. The singer did return to the band. But they wrote a movie about the Replacement singer. Tim Ripper Owen

Soo... Some thoughts about painkiller. 1. Yes, he is a superhero. How he looks? Just look how cover looks. That's him. 2. My personal interpretation is that he is our own internal hero - that will save you in the darkest times. "They've been brought back from the grave With mankind resurrected Forever to survive Returns from Armageddon to the skies" And that is also a definition of metal - when you are so down and alone - metal music and musicians are with you. They felt what you did, but remind you to allways caome back. 3. This whole album is a definition of Heavy metal. It was my first album that introduced me to metal and noone will give a better definition of that genre. 4. They are 50years on stage, the old 70year olds on stage that just dropped two albums in a row, that are one of their best. I mean they had a lot of perfect albums, but I wanna drop another 2 parts of perfect quality of what I do, when I am 70. 5. I saw them live this year. They are doing it on stage. Even better. 6. I allways find surprising on how Rap and Metal are close to each other. Both on topic and lyrical expression. An I mean the pure music, not whole monetized environment. But that's just my opinion. 7. Have a good day, and if your day goes horribly - play this song, FUCKING LOUD! You'll be like new. Ps. A challenge - if you had to make your version of a superhero, your own - lyrically described like here - what it would be like?

Judas Priest played at The Louder Than Life Festival in Louisville, KY in 2022. Their guitarist, Richie Faulkner, suffered a ruptured aorta while performing this song. He finished the song and was rushed to the hospital. I've heard aortic ruptures have over a 90% mortality rate. I was there... it was a badass performance. BTW: Rob Halford, the lead singer, was 71 at that show. He hit every single one of those notes. They impressed me more than any other band that day. SMH... 71 and still a beast

This is a classic Priest song also featured on Guitar Hero that most people couldn't play. K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton are regarded as one if not the most talented guitarists in the world. They are a huge influence on players today. They've been at it for more 50+years. The same could be said about singer Rob Halford. I saw them last year and he's still belting out these notes. He has a 5 octave range and also has a beautiful soulful voice on some of their ballads. As for the song itself, it's about a soldier that's nicknamed Painkiller and takes drugs to be able to deal with the horrors of wars. So yeah, once again Metal guys tackle issues that not of people want to. In this case, possible PTSD but 30 years ago when it wasn't even talked about. That's why at 55 I still a Metal fan because most bands do take on the ugly side of society. Hell, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth sang about Holy Wars in the Middle East and a conflict with Israel in the 80's! There's a lot in common between Hip Hop & Rap / Metal when it comes to tackling social issues. If you can find Rob Halford testifying at that trial on KZbin it's absolutely beautiful. The man is articulate, intelligent and so empathetic towards the family of that young man. That trial nearly destroyed him. Powerful stuff. FYI K.K. Downing left the band years ago and sadly Glenn Tipton has been battling dementia I believe, preventing him from touring. They've just released a new album and are touring the world again with other guitarists, although they've already recorded a few albums with them and even Tipton played on a few songs as well. Lastly, you'll get a kick out of this one: Rob Halford, singer, is gay. He came out about 20 some years ago. He was afraid that Metalheads would judge him. I'm sure he had a few nasty comments, but again, the Metal community proved to be a lot more tolerant and accepting than most other genres of music.
