Hey there man! You bet that Judas Priest are still around, and better yet: they’re still insanely popular. Their two most recent albums were both #1 in the charts all over the world - not sure how they did in the US, but I think they did pretty well there too. Their album ”Invincible shield” actually came out in the spring of 2024 so it’s still new, and if you check out the lead single ”Panic attack” you’ll find out that they’re still doing it the ”Painkiller” way after all these years - and well! Lyricswise you don’t have to worry about these guys. Some of their titles may look suspicious at first glance, but on further investigation, you’ll always find that it’s just Rob Halford being clever and making you work a little to get the actual message. Unless the lyrics are just about the joy of being part of the heavy metal community - he’s written his fair share of those too. Some of my favorite lyrics of his include ”Savage” - about the cruelty of conquering and enslaving indigenous tribes - and ”Electric eye”, that’s about actually being a spy satellite gathering all of our secrets without us even noticing. This guy is not just a good singer, he’s got a way with words too. Yeah, that court case you mentioned … Here’s what happened. In 1985, two young guys from Nevada, Raymond Belknap and James Vance, shot themselves. The former died, the latter was horribly disfigured and died years later. They both had psychological issues, had substance problems and came from real dysfunctional families - poor guys. But their families insisted that the real reason for them shooting themselves, was that they had just been listening to Judas Priest’s 1978 ”Stained class” album. The original claim was that the song ”Heroes end” encouraged suicide - which only a brief glance at the lyrics showed was not the case. The claim that eventually made it to court, was that the words ” do it” could be heard if you played one of the other songs BACKWARDS. Even crazier, that song was not even a Judas Priest original. It was ”Better by you better than me”, a cover of a 1969 song by one of the early British heavy metal pioneers Spooky Tooth. So the case, after it finally ending up in court in 1990, was dropped after six weeks. "It tore us up emotionally hearing someone say to the judge and the cameras that this is a band that creates music that kills young people," Halford admitted later. "We accept that some people don’t like heavy metal, but we can’t let them convince us that it’s negative and destructive. Heavy metal is a friend that gives people great pleasure and enjoyment and helps them through hard times."

This is 24K pure heavy metal, without any impurities. This song is the quintessential heavy metal manifesto, no sub-genres, this is the real deal. Judas Priest were one of the pioneer British bands that created the genre back in the 70's. They crafted what it may be considered the milestone, the germinal stem of the genre, the absolutely legendary "British Steel" in 1980 (their sixth album). It contains some gems that I have considered for many years as the blueprints of the heavy metal sounds, in particular "Rapid Fire" and "Steeler". Finally after a decade, precisely in 1990, they re-crafted the new standard with "Painkiller". They are still very active with a new album and touring all over the world with two different guitar players. They parted ways with the blonde one, K.K. Downing, some years ago and unfortunately Glenn Tipton, the one that plays that crazy solo had to leave because of Parkinson's disease. He kept playing as long as he could but he had to surrender in 2018. Rob Halford, the singer, also known as the "Metal God", is now 73 yrs old but his voice is still incredible.

Judas Priest is the very definition of heavy metal. The first true metal band. Sabbath made it heavy, Priest made it metal. The Stained Class and Sad Wings of Destiny albums are 2 of the most important and influential rock albums of all-time. It literally started one of the biggest genres in rock music. You mentioned sounding like Iron Maiden, yes it does. But its the other way around. Maiden sounds like Priest. Priest did it first. Just about every major metal subgenre you can find a track in Judas Priest's catalog that is the precursor. Priest did it first and did it better. Painkiller was Priest showing the younger thrash metal bands that the old guys could still go toe to toe with them and do it better. Check out their live set from the US Festival. YES YES YES Thank you so much for doing this reaction, please go down the rabbit hole of Judas Priest they are the Metal Gods best band ever. Yes Judas was in court over two young guys doing a suicide pact, to a song they didn't even write it was their cover of Better By You Better Than Me. Painkiller is like a metal version of Christ's Armageddon but with a futuristic machine/man riding his metal monster, his bike with the blades for wheels coming down to save mankind. i've been a Judas Priest fan since 1979

Their 1st album was released in 1974, while this is from 1990. Their older stuff is more hard rock than metal. They wanted to compose the most "Metal" song possible, and they succeeded!

I grew up with bands like Judas Priest. About 25-30 years ago I remember reading an article about Painkiller from Judas Priest. It was an interview. I don’t remember what magazine it was from or who interviewed them (Rob Halford, the singer) because it was a long time ago. Anyway, I do recall him saying that the song was about the second coming of Christ. This is like a fantasy version of what that would be like. Just thought I’d chime in on what I read over two decades ago because you were trying to understand what the song was about. I wish they still made music like this! I hope you see read this comment.

My fav metal rock song of all time. Period. There are plenty other awesome metal rock songs, heavy metal, rock songs, death, metal rock, songs, black metal speed, metal thrash metal but but but painkiller has always been an especially now every time I hear it over and over again within the context of other metal rock songs undeniably for me. I am only speaking for me. Painkiller is absolutely number one heavy metal rock song of all time for me in the video support it, supreme metal nature and attitude I can’t get enough of it

They still kick ass live! Saw them last summer! Halford recently said in an interview that it filled him with joy seeing how fans welcomed them on this last tour. He saw Metal as being bigger and stronger than ever. They not only have old metalhead fans. he saw thousands of young teens at their shows. It made him believe in the next generations carrying the metal torch! And BP, you was spot on with the lyrics! Nicely caught!

Scott Travis was a local drummer in Virginia Beach when I was young. It was a thrilling time for local bands to see one of our own go to the big leagues.

Rob Halford , called The Metal God is one of the greatest voices in metal . Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are the two best classic heavy metal bands. Founded in 1969, Priest decided to make their heaviest album Painkiller in 1990 to show to the younger bands how it is done. Still considered the ultimate heavy metal album.

Yeeees!!! My favorite band! Metal gods... they (with Black Sabbath) basically started heavy metal. We need more Priest reactions (live or studio... both are amazing)! They are still touring after 55 years and just released 19th studio album earlier this year which is awesome.

Judas Priest in fact is still playing they just celebrated their 50th year although late because of the pandemic. I don't even know how many shows I've seen of theirs but definitely the most out of all bands. Rob Halfords vocals are definitely insane they are like no other. At the end of this song that is one breath for that entire ending. JP #1 for life

The term you're looking for is "anti-hero." The Painkiller is an anti-hero that is depicted on the album art for the album this song appears on. If you look at the album art, then listen to this song again, the full meaning will become clearer. God bless!!

Rob Halford introduced the leather look to Metal. He got the idea from his time in gay bars. At a MTV interview on Feb. 4, 1998, Rob Halford came out of the closet. The shock of the Metal community when they realized they were imitating gay style outfits was hilarious.

Yeah Halford trolled everyone into dressing like Leather Daddies.... But that just goes to show you how cool and inspirational Rob Halford really is. The dude is the Freddy Mercury of metal music -- unreal amounts of charisma and stage presence

i remember the first big concert i went to. 2005, Judas Priest, with Whitesnake as openning act. I've had been in small venues before, but this was a stadium event. I was 17 at the time, it was a bit chilly, so i went with a light jacket and cargo pants to the concert. The moment when the drumms started, my whole clothes were vibrating, i felt a thump in my chest. It was like someone slapping me. That moment was burned in my brain forever. I became an addict to metal concerts eversince. Scott Travis is a drumm god.

Judas Priest was from the New Wave of British Metal of the late 70's/early 80's. Nowadays, I think of them as traditional metal. They just dropped an album in the last couple years. Still bringing the METAL!
