Dave Mustaine's voice is an acquired taste but he wasn't born a singer. He was the original lead guitarist in the original Metallica line-up at the beginning of the 80's and he was fired just before the band entered the studio to record their debut album because of drug abuse and constant fights with the other members of the band. So he essentially said: f++k off you idiots I will create my own band. Megadeth was born and his unique blend of speed and thrash metal, enriched with meaningful lyrics and crazy guitar solos*, conquered the hearts of many metal aficionados of that golden era including the young myself who always cherished Megadeth above Metallica. Over the years Mustaine became more conservative even though he confessed that he often found himself voting for the lesser of two evils. He appeared quite a few times as a guest in Alex Jones' "Info Wars" podcast and while I don't necessarily agree with everything he says I recognize him to be much more based than the vast majority of his colleagues. *The "Tornado of souls" solo played by Marty Friedman is considered by many worthy a spot in the top three most iconic guitar solos in metal history (together with Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" and Randy Rhoads' "Crazy Train".

I know it's opinion, but one of my favorite questions to ask someone I don't know well is "What singular event was both the best and worst moment in metal music?" My response after I let them ponder for a moment... "Metallica fires Dave Mustane." With him fired, we got Megadeth. Without his firing, we would have had Metallica with Mustane on guitar. Again, personal opinion and very specific question. It's fun to hear the response to said though.

Dave Mustaine is a born-again Christian. He's a real sweetheart in my book. Two years ago, a few months after my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer, my husband received a personal video birthday message (like from right in Dave's house!). It was somehow arranged by our nephew. Anyway, Dave wished my Johnny a happy birthday and gave him words of encouragement regarding his cancer fight. The video was several minutes long. My husband was blown away as he had been a Megadeth fan for many years. My Johnny passed away on July 17th and I recently found the video saved on his computer. It meant so much to both of us.

Thank you for sharing you story. I'm sorry for your loss, but maybe you should think about posting that video, because Dave himself just went through chemo last year, for throat cancer, and immediately after finishing, he recorded the sick, the dying and the dead. His vocals are horrible, but the reason he did his own vocals, is so he could never be kicked out of the band again. Infact, he made it so every other piece of the band could be changed and replaced, but not his part. Dave also owns a brewery and a winery down in Nashville. When he's not on tour, he will grab the guys and stop in really small bars and perform under the name Vic and the rattleheads!

MEGADETH AND METALLICA WERE VERY POLITICAL IN THE EARLY DAYS... THIS IS 1991, DIRECTED AT PRES. BUSH #1 ...
@ErikRye27 күн бұрын
Yep for Bush, however any politician could fall in this category
@elfdogre218127 күн бұрын
Yeah, Bush was an easy target for so many back in those days. Comedians, msm news, various bands: Megadeth, RATM for a couple of examples... and it was all good; no one shutting anyone else down over it! At least Mustane/Megadeth didn't jump on the Dem bandwagon like RATM did, at least not that I know of, or could find. If you're going to protest big gov/war policies, then protest all regimes that push them, otherwise you look like a hypocritical sellout... as Rage For the Machine looks.
@hosermcmoose27 күн бұрын
While Bush Sr. might have been the most immediate inspiration, I think the song is pretty clear that this is much more universal than just one man. In fact, while the imagery is all American, I don't think they're really even saying that this is a specifically American problem, but rather applies pretty globally. As BP notes, there are some elements of a cult of personality being referenced, something that tends to be more associated (perhaps incorrectly?) with dictatorships than democracies. Certainly, America in the early 1990's isn't the only time/place where people have "danced like marionettes, swaying to the symphony of destruction".

@shmick607927 күн бұрын
Yeah they’ve always been jerks. That’s even highlighted for us at the time this album was made - via the Wayne’s World movies. A decade earlier, US record labels screwed Cold Chisel over because they wouldn’t change their style to suit the sunset strip vibe. The same people that kept the likes of Motley Crue and Ozzy hooked on drugs throughout the 80s. They did the same to the pop princesses in the late 90s, and have been the puppet masters of their clueless artists since at least the 60s. Ever seen the Elvis movie, or seen any Black Sabbath documentaries? The artist was ripped off so badly by their management back then because proper legal agreements were not in place. RATM weren’t silly, they knew this and used the industry to their advantage while simultaneously trashing it in their music.

Actually, if you step back and look at it through the wider panorama view, the American public has overwhelmingly been an anti-war populace historically. In the 20th century, we didn't get involved in the two world wars until late. Until we absolutely had to. We didn't join WW1 until the last year (1918), and we repeated it in the European theater of WW2 by joining in June 1944 and completing it in May 1945. We were so anti-war afterwards that they had to implement the draft for Korea and Vietnam because nobody wanted to fight either war. It was presumed the draft would have to be reinstated in 1991 in Kuwait for Desert Storm, but the Air Force & the first armored USMC divisions kicked Iraq's ass so quickly that it wasn't needed. The only time you saw a genuine grassroots fervor for war was in the years following 9/11, but that quickly evaporated as soon as they bungled the 2003 invasion of Iraq searching for WMD. In the grand scheme of things, America has been a decidedly anti-war population. Which is typical of nations that flourish. You only hear the war drums beating in the nations that were defeated and want revenge, or struggling economies where you restore national pride through conquest. A la, what we're seeing with Russia presently. They want to regain the superpower status they had during the Cold War, and the economy is so stagnant that careers in the military become more attractive than mining coal and occupying assembly lines in old fashioned factories where automation doesn't exist and everything has to be assembled manually by hand.
