Breakfast in America is a tongue in cheek humorous take by the BRITISH band Supertramp at touring in America and discovering the "American Dream" etc. They reference the girls in California (a reference to the famous Beach Boys "California Girls" song) and that "everybody in Texas is a millionaire". The cover is a painting of a waitress holding up a breakfast ala The Statue of Liberty. Supertramp was always a humorous satirical type of band that was very clever with 2 great writers and singers.

I saw Roger Hodgson play to a nearly empty outdoor festival in Grand Beach Manitoba on July 30th, 2004. The other band mates and equipment didn't show up due to travel issues. He had to borrow the keyboard from The Doors of the 21st century. He wasn't even announced as he was a last-minute replacement for the Beach Boys if my memory serves me right. So unannounced, without his accompaniment, playing on a borrowed keyboard to a nearly empty venue, he gave one of the best performances I've ever heard, and I became a supertramp fan from that moment on. True musician.

It's my favorite album cover. The design details and graphics are as top notch as the music. I bought it when it came out and the attention to detail, like how they continued the orange theme inside of the outer sleeve, I mean, nobody did that, you'd only see a small part of it when you removed your record and yet there it is. Superb record all around.

This is the soundtrack of my youth! Supertramp are an English band and many of the references in the song are to English things. The jumbo is a jumbo jet and kippers are smoked fish that are a traditional English breakfast. The song is so full of excitement about coming to America - it is joyous. The Logical Song is also worth a listen - it is genius.

Yeah it`s a herring, an oily fish which is butterflied out flat & then cold-smoked over smouldering woodchips to cure, they really are lovely for a change at breakfast. My dad used to cook a tray of them after rolling-up & soaking them in vinegar, again great & good for you too!

With Supertramp, aside from their obscurer first two albums, most of their albums were written and sung by Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. After the album Famous Last Words, Roger left and moved to America, and had a solo career. Supertramp had a few albums after that, but have mostly disbanded. Roger wrote a fair number of their hits (including "Breakfast in America"). "The Logical Song" and "Give a Little Bit" are two other big songs of Roger's that I know were covered by other bands. "Crime of the Century" was probably their best album, but they had a several good ones...

"Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroesrelies heavily on the music and chorus from Supertramp's hit song "Breakfast in America" and the producer gave credit for this. The songwriters of Cupid's Chokehold are Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies of Supertramp and Travis McCoy. So it is a fair cover/interpolation of Supertramp's song from the 1979. What I find remarkable is that even then a pop song with clarinet, trombone and tuba was a rarity. BTW kipper is a smoked fish (hering).
@stevenmix372313 күн бұрын
A superb album. Covers are fair game, because they openly credit and pay for the content. Rock stole little things here and there, which would otherwise have disappeared into total obscurity, and then blew them up into gigantic hits, which gave new life sometimes to the original forgotten artists. While rap just rampantly steals killer hooks from past gigantic hits, for an audience which never ventures out of the rap zone, and so is clueless to the rap scam they keep paying for.
@bobelliott942614 күн бұрын
"Breakfast in America" refers to the title of an album by the English rock band Supertramp, which is interpreted as a commentary on the American lifestyle and the dream of achieving success in the United States, particularly through the eyes of someone from outside the country, often seen as a somewhat idealized and superficial view of American life; the phrase itself suggests a desire to experience the quintessential American lifestyle, even down to a typical breakfast meal.
