Sidney Poitier was a magnificent actor. A giant in the industry. A man with real class and distinction. He was a humble man who never sought adoration. His name should ring through history because he was one of the greats during a time of racial upheaval in the 60s. His appeal was universal. He won an Oscar for Lillies in the Field in 1964.

@FixedVariable My Mom introduced me to that movie when I was a teen, as it was one of her favorite movies. I love that movie still today. That Spencer Tracy speech towards the end is legendary. Katherine Hepburn was amazing, too.
@tchampagne149410 сағат бұрын
@@FixedVariable Yes, I love that film. It was Spencer Tracy's last film. He died shortly after. He and Katherine Hepburn were deeply in love with each other. Spencer was married to a woman who would not give him a divorce. So, when he had the speech at the end, he was sincerely expressing his undying love directly to Katherine (and to the world). It is one of the most beautiful scenes in film history. Just magical, when you know their history.
@stephenstrudwick8095Ай бұрын
Yes, your initial interpretation is correct. The film is based on E.R. Braithwaite’s book. It deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school in the East End of London. Mark Thackeray (Sideney Poitier) is a teacher at that school. He took up teaching while waiting to hear about an engineering job. He was given a class of unruly kids. He develops these kids into better people as they enter the real world after graduation. During the school year he demanded they call him “Sir." At the end of the movie at the graduation dance, Babs (Lulu) sings him "To Sir With Love" and the class gives him a gift. So the song is about growing up and giving respect to those that help develop them.

Ironically, a decade earlier, Poitier played one of the problem students in the film Blackboard Jungle (which used Rock Around The Clock as its theme song), with Glenn Ford playing the teacher. Very similar story line to To Sir With Love (and Dangerous Minds).

Hi, Black Pegasus! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Lulu is an iconic singer, actress and TV personality, from Scotland, who's career began in the 60's. She was amongst the British Invasion list of artists. She was very good friends with the top artists of the time, as she performed on the same circuit. She was even married to Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees. Her biggest hit in the UK was 'Boom Bang-a-Bang' which got to No.2 in the official charts in 1969, but she's probably best known for her first hit, which was 'Shout' which got to No 7 in 1964. She will always be a big name over here and forever associated with Scotland, even though she lives over there in America. You should definitely check out more of her songs. Æ 🙏 🏴

"To Sir, with Love" is a song written for the 1967 film of the same name. The film is a drama that follows an American teacher, Mark Thackeray (the Late Great Sidney Poitier), working in an East End London secondary school. The song is sung from the perspective of Thackeray's students (ie, one of them being Lulu), who have grown to respect and care for him over the course of the film. The lyrics express the students' gratitude and affection for their teacher, who has had a profound impact on their lives. The song became a major hit single for Lulu, who performed it for the film's soundtrack.

"To Sir With Love" was a great movie from back in the 1960s. Sidney Poitier, a great actor with a decades-long acting career, played a teacher who they all called "Sir". Lulu was an actress who also sang the theme song. In real life, Lulu (the girl with the short red hair) was once married to one of the BeeGees brothers (Maurice, I think). I like this song as much today as when it was new.

This was the original of the teacher takes over a class of underachieving hoodlums etc and turns them around. This is a really worthwhile movie to watch. This particular school is in England. During the 1960s, Lulu achieved another five top-ten hits in the United Kingdom, including "Boom Bang-a-Bang", which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969. Just weeks before her 1969 Eurovision appearance, Lulu had married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. Maurice's older brother Barry was opposed to their marriage as he believed them to be too young. Their honeymoon in Mexico had to be postponed because of Lulu's Eurovision commitment. Their careers and his heavy drinking forced them apart and they divorced in 1973, but remained on good terms.

Lulu (born Marie Lawrie on 3 November 1948) is a Scottish singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. By age 16, Marie Lawie was riding high in the UK charts as "Lulu and the Luvvers" - a name that came from Marie’s manager who referred to her as “a real lulu of a kid” - with a raucous cover of the Isley Brothers‘ classic rave-up, Shout. Her powerful voice makes this version quite impressive, especially given her age at the time! In the spring of ’67 Lulu took Neil Diamond’s "The Boat That I Row" into the British Top 10. Her US label released it as well, with "To Sir With Love," from the Sidney Poitier movie of the same name, on the flip side. Lulu’s performance on record and on screen powered it to number 1. Oddly, Sir, the recording, was not released in England.
