Thanks for your reaction, it was written by my dad,Steve Wolfe, when I was 13. he’s singing backing vocals too, also wrote Lost in France. He sadly died 2021. We grew up on a council flat in Pimlico London my dad was a struggling song writer. Met up with co writerRonnie Scott they discovered Bonnie singing as Gaynor Hopkins in a club in Wales & after the success We moved from the council estate to the Algarve, Portugal. They split up and she went to sign for Steinbeck. Ps I’m a massive fan of Ren and always watch your Ren reaction first.

In 1977 Bonnie Tyler underwent an operation to remove vocal chord nodules . The doctor recommended for her to rest her voice for 6 weeks . She screamed one day out of frustration and damaged her vocal chords . This is how she got that signature rasp

@aura81295Ай бұрын
@@marquisdelafayette1929 Me too, along with a few others, such as Cher. They have distinct voices, especially for females. Contralto raspy female vocalists with lots of vibrato can have a stronger emotional effect. I appreciate the clean, soprano sounds as well. But they lack the soulfulness or whatever that other element might be. Generally, I prefer that raspiness in both female and male vocalists, although with males grit might be a better description.
@VictorPM1550Ай бұрын
Thanks for mentioning this - personally I always find scratchy voices over-rated. I always sense some unhealthiness with the vocal chords when I hear it, especially with female singers. And now that you mentioned a date, I figured that her first single Lost In France must be from before that operation. So I just took a listen - wow, her original clean voice was beautiful 🙂

Funny but true story. I was on holiday in Portugal with my dad, visiting my uncle and his husband that lived out there.. I wanna say 1989 or 90.. me and the uncles were playing frisbee in the sea when suddenly one uncle stops and says "would you look at that. Your dad's rubbing suntan cream on Bonnie Tyler's back" and yes he was.. now my dad was an older dad.. 50 when I was born so he would have been around 70 at this point so when we went back to where he was sitting on the beach happily chatting away to Miss Tyler, he introduced her to us as this lovely Welsh lady who had asked him to put cream on her back.. she laughed and winked at us... Bless him he had no clue who she was.. we had to show him her videos later. After that right up until he died in 2012 at the age of 94.. if he ever met anyone new he told them the story of him and Bonnie Tyler 😂😂 god I miss that man!

First time I heard this song it was like someone had written about my life. A 3 year relation ship had just ended, he had a son I was close with, and had just found out I was pregnant with his child. I was a a small diner waiting for him going to tell him the news. He came in sat with me we talked for maybe 5 minutes. Then another female came to the door and said let's go. He got up and walked out. I was crushed. On the way home I heard this song had to stop the car I was crying so hard. To me that is what makes some songs super songs. They bring back all the memories, along with the love laughter and pain of life. Anyway thanks for the walk down memory lane.

This was just a year or two after she had vocal chord surgery that they thought might end her career, but instead the damage to her vocal chords was what made her career. When a singer has throat problems severe enough to require surgery, the procedure can often be career threatening. In the case of Bonnie Tyler, however, the nodules that she developed singing in nightclubs in her native Wales turned out to be career making. After her 1976 operation, Tyler's voice carried a distinctive rasp somewhat reminiscent of Rod Stewart's, and helped propel this song into the #3 spot. Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe, who were Tyler's managers, wrote this song. The team wrote and produced many of her songs in the '70s Tyler released this song in November 1977 on RCA 5057. The country singer Juice Newton came out with her version on Capitol 4552 in April 1978; her version only reached #86, though it went gold in Mexico. Around this same time, Ronnie Spector (of the Ronettes) also recorded the song but her version went nowhere. Tyler's version proved the most successful, reaching #1 in Canada, France, Sweden, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.

Her voice is very raspy here, in fact, back then, in the 70's, the disc-jockeys would call her, "The female Rod Stewart". Then she had some surgery done on vocal chords and it made her voice less raspy. This song brings back my memories of my break ups, I would hear it and sing with it, feeling all that pain in my heart.

She has a song called "If you were a woman and I was a man" that was written by Desmond Child, who later collaborated with Jon Bon Jovi and Riche Sambora and he took a tape with that song and when Jon heard it clicked musically with an idea he and Richie had and the three of them finished it and became "You Give Love A Bad Name", when you hear Bonnie's song chorus you can tell the similarity.
