Yeah, some people's love can feel as if they're squeezing the life out of you. I knew someone who was pissed that her husband had.....friends. "Why does he need friends when he's got *ME?"* Of course he eventually left her. Can't say I blame him.
@jackiec8594 ай бұрын
Some are into that sort of thing. Me, I'd run screaming into the night to get away. Yes, there would be *screaming.*

You're learning, P. It is blues guitar. I don't want no one squeeze me, they might take away my life - she doesn't want a jealous fool that will try to change who she is. She wants a comfortable relationship with the freedom to be herself.
@LibraAllWoman4 ай бұрын
Exactly. Also, she doesn't want to be suffocated within the relationship. Being squeezed is a demonstration of dominance, control, and desperation. However, being held demonstrates love, tenderness, and appreciation.

The "squeeze" part equates to excessive clinginess. She's saying that a person who is too clingy basically saps your life away, imposing themselves on you and draining the days and freedoms of your life.

“Don’t squeeze me just hold me”… like metaphorical bro… like don’t smother me…just hold me gently. Don’t be a bug/crazy person/try to control me type of guy…just hold me and rock me thru the night. Blues is the root of all music in the last 100 years-Rock, Country, Rap, funk, you name it.
@t.a.k.palfrey38824 ай бұрын
Sure, blues has greatly influenced many genres of music, but not all. Folk, reggae, contemporary "classical" music, and industrial rock have taken very little from blues. Blues itself had its origins in West African traditional rhythms. So all western music is interconnected to a degree.

It was 1996/1997, I was in the Army, stationed in Camp Zama, Japan, coming back to work after lunch; as I pulled into the parking lot this song came on Armed Forces Radio. Never heard it, nor of her, before. I sat in the car and listened to the song all the way thru, which I NEVER did. As soon as it was over I put the car in reverse and drove to the Post Exchange just hoping they had Tracy's CD. They did, and of course I still have it all these years later.

In Tracy Chapman's song "Give Me One Reason," the lyric "don't squeeze me, it might take my life away" is a metaphorical expression signifying a plea for the partner to not pressure her too hard emotionally, as it feels suffocating and could potentially destroy the relationship. This my search result. Released in 1995, and considered folk genre. Cheers.
@brookee73914 ай бұрын
"I don't want no one to squeeze me"(break her heart because it will essentially and ) "might take away my life" ...( truly, death by a broken heart). So she'd rather them be up front and honest , if it's a one night stand, at least be a loyal friend, (as in, at least: " hold me, and rock me through the night" , I'm already broken, don't break me, anymore) regardless, I feel the passionate fire in her voice,😂 the sting and pain, she's referencing directly. ..It's deep, blues, soul, everything, beautiful. Much love to you and your fam, P. ♡B

The radio station I listened to while living in Atlanta for a couple of years was talking about this song, and a girl they knew who misheard the lyrics; instead of "Give me one reason to stay here" she thought Tracy was singing, "Give me one reason to steal." Once you hear it that way, you can't stop hearing it that way! Now do some Joan Armatrading. Way earlier, and did some fantastic songs. "I'm Lucky" and "Eating the Bear" are good ones to start with.

😊❤ Hi Black P! 😅 I love this song! I think the line, 'I don't want no one to squeeze me they might take away my life' is saying she doesn't want to be controlled just loved. So many people are afraid of love and commitment because they think they will lose their identity and freedom. I also get a sense that she is telling her lover that she doesn't want to 'squeeze' him, i.e., smother, love bomb or change him either. 😊❤❤

Yes .. I agree with the other commenters.... she wants someone who is not going to try to control her.. but I also think she is wanting someone who is going to love her and allow her to focus on her career. So I would think traveling a lot and being on the road.. so would need someone who is cool with that and not insecure. However.. that's just me reading a lot more into it.. and personalizing it to maybe Tracy's life at the time this song was coming out. Any ways...... I love Tracy and her musc.. and my fave three songs of hers are Forgive Me... Baby I Can Hold You.. and The Promise. All of them are top notch!!!!! Not related.. but I have to say it.. she has the best smile and dimples in the whole world!!!! 🥰😍😂 Cheers from Ontario, Canada🍁
