Lyrically, musically, technically, I have to say this is their best song. The anti-war part is a core part of metal; Sabbath began the tradition, and Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Metallica very much continued the tradition and amplified it.

That's why metal got the big Satan Music title slapped on it. The government was run by people claiming to be Christian while they bombed the shit outta whoever they wanted. Most metal from the 80s and early 90s actually has a good message. Can't have the sheep questioning reality.

The second half is actually about the comic The Punisher, first half was about the war, but when they played in Ireland, he was blacked out drunk on stage and dedicated this song to the rebels, cause they used the bands skull for a short, which in Belfast, where the show was caused a riot, the band had to be snuck out in the middle of the night
@fuckitweball77
@fuckitweball77 2 жыл бұрын
They didn't play it, Dave Mustaine said "give Ireland back to the Irish" or something like that, this made the audience split into two sides and they started fighting each other, Megadeth had to be escorted out of the building , this is the experience that inspired Dave to write Holy Wars
@theicedevil
@theicedevil Жыл бұрын
The band was playing Ireland, probably for the first time, during the height of the "The Troubles". The band was really naive, not really knowing what "The Troubles" were or what it was about. Backstage there was talk about some incidents happening around the arena during the event that were Troubles related. Later on backstage, Dave caught someone selling bootleg Megadeth shirt and he went to take away the bootlegged shirt from the man. The bootlegger protested by saying that the shirts are being sold in support for "the cause". Dave, being naive, asked him what is "the cause?", which the bootlegger answered by saying, “It’s about prejudice and religion. The Catholics think they are better than the Protestants; the Protestants think they are better than the Catholics.” So during the bands set, before they started playing their famous cover of the Sex Pistols song, Anarchy In The UK, Dave (being drunk and stupid) introed in the song by saying "This one is for The Cause". This caused the audience to divide and start fighting one another. After the set, the band was immediately escorted to a bullet proof bus and then driven out of the country that very night. Dave was so drunk that he didn't remember the night and was shocked to find out that he was not in Ireland anymore. This I believe also got Megadeth in hot water with Ireland for a time as well.

As someone who was an underground fan and claims to love Megadeth, what was it like trying to be a fan of both when so many of their fans wanted to “see the others dead” just because of the whole Metallica v Mustaine situation? So I am somewhat of a musician (done a few random projects but mostly a passionate hobby that I will do to death) I have a regular job so am no pro but I can impress randos so I'm not total garbage. That being said I've been a metal head since a young child thanks to my mom and dad. I also listen to literally everything besides techno and most modern country/rap. Imho Megadeath is a better band technically in skill than Metallica, and I fucking love them to death. That being said I do feel that Metallica songs just "sound" better even though they more simple and easier to play.

Megadeth is one(out of many others) of the top metal bands in the music industry. The one in the blonde-like hair is Dave mustaine, he the guitarist and vocalist for the band. I actually got to see him in my very 1st concert experience back in 2012 during their U.S collider tour in NJ and they are no joke. This music video gives you a small taste of what they did in their earlier prime and now( if my math is correct) nearly 40 years later they are still in their prime to this day. They even released their new recent album: The sick, The dying, And the dead a little over a couple months ago. To summarize it, they are a band that is a huge must-listen when it comes to their songs and performances of those songs. If you want to listen to more Megadeth, I highly suggest listening to hangar 18.

The skull you keep alluding to is the bands mascot "Vic Rattlehead," I feel that this line up of Dave Mustaine lead vocals & guitar, Marty Freedman guitar, David Ellifson bass, and the late Nick Menza RIP on drums is by far the greatest line up in the bands long history. I had the honor of seeing this line up in concert five times. You can believe that at every one of those shows I was in the mosh pit that you mentioned during the video! Just saw a couple of your metal reactions and analysis videos and I am very impressed with your lyrical examination and ability to piece together the meanings presented within the songs themselves. When you delve into metal there are too many bands to choose from.. and I am sure you have many people throwing suggestions your way. I will give you a quick breakdown of my own favorite bands but not the songs themselves.. just so you are familiar with the names. King Diamond - King Diamond does concept albums/horror stories. Worth a listen if you are into stories that span multiple songs. Mercyful Fate - King Diamond does vocals for Mercyful fate.. which is an even darker band lyrically. Meshuggah - Famous for polyrhythms and for pioneering a style known as djent. Possessed - A mix of speed/thrash metal with harsh (growling almost) vocals.. the band that inspired the first death metal band. Death - The first death metal band. Iron Maiden - Each song tells a story either of history, alternative futures, or is based on a book or a movie. Black Sabbath - Credited for being the OG of metal. Ozzy Osbourne was their original vocalist. Ozzy Osbourne - Solo artist and see above. Dio - Ronnie James Dio is the vocalist for this band.. also replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath for a time. One of the best vocalists in metal. Rainbow - Another band which featured Dio on vocals for a time. Less metal more rock.. but it was the 70's. AC/DC - Classic hard rock with a heavy blues influence. Metallica - Speaks for itself. One of the 'big 4' of thrash metal. Megadeth - Speaks for itself. Another of the big 4. Slayer - Another big 4.. but much darker/harsher than Metallica/Megadeth Anthrax - The last of the big 4.. considered by most to be the 'fun' band of the big 4. Yngwie Malmsteen - Classically trained metal guitarist. Devin Townsend - Musical Madman with many projects under his belt (under many different names) Strapping Young Lad - One of Devin's more psychotic projects. Gojira - French metal with an environmental agenda. Jinjer - Female lead singer.. from Ukraine. Mix of styles of music from Reggae to heavy metal. There are waaaay more than that (obviously) but these should keep you in stitches for years if you do a deep-dive into their music plus the music that inspired them.. as well as the music that they inspired. Enjoy the trip ;)

That "tinny" effect you mentioned before Dave's solo was a 2nd fret palmed harmonic, created by lightly touching the string exactly at the fret position instead of pressing it all the way to the board, then palm-mute picking as normal. There are a few positions along the string that one can do this, each position giving a different pitch, with similar effect.

The first half of the song "Holy Wars" was made from Dave's experience in Ireland at a concert they were playing. Not knowing of the differences between Ireland and North Ireland, a guy selling bootleg shirts in the crowd for "The Cause", which Dave thought was to support Ireland itself (turned out to be for the IRA), then he said one of the worst things you could say on stage at that time, "This song is for The Cause - Anarchy In Antrim!" where they covered a sex pistols song and all shit broke loose and Dave had to be taken to a bullet proof bus. The 2nd half of the song "The Punishment Due" is literally just about Marvel's The Punisher. Dave is a huge comic book fan. \m/\m/

14:00 because hes pulling an " artificial harmonic with his finger on the 3rd fret " that would be by simply laying your finger softly on the string without pressing it down on the fret and then picking with left/right hand 👌

KH, thanks for the reaction of this classic thrash metal band. They are by far the most progressive of the ‘big four’ thrash bands. This is one of their best songs from this album. Hope you decide to go on this journey. MEGADETH has many notable songs that are a must for an ultimate gym playlist and even playlist for reactions.

Great reaction! Too many ppl focus on Mustaines voice in the negative, and you really understood what he was actually doing. Serious props for that. One band I'd seriously recommend is Gojira. You talk about heavy guitars and even heavier lyrics...Gojira, brother. Gojira. They are straight up modern day philosophers. Can't wait for more!!

Mustaine's voice is another instrument in Megadeth and used that way. The mistake people have is thinking of him as a "singer." I can't imagine anyone doing the vocals in Megadeth. Yes, it's an acquired taste for some, but for me, no one else would have worked as well for this band.

The story is Dave was doing a concert in Ireland, saw some ppl with bootleg megadeth shirts at his concert and was pissed. They told him it was for the cause. Dave back then liked a drink or many before a show. He went on stage and basically said give the Irish back their freedom from England. That's a huge Para phrase , but yeah. The concert got a bit tense. Next morning the England soldiers escorted them for their safety in armored vehicles out of the city. That gave him holy wars. The punishment due is from the comic the punisher. There are 2 other songs that tie into this part. First is title track of 1st album. The other came later.

The "tinny" sounds you were asking about on the guitar are natural harmonics with a lot of distortion, and a little bit of fret hand muting. It's hard to explain without showing, but I'll try lol. In certain areas of the neck, you can slightly touch the string over those areas to get natural harmonics by picking and lifting off the string. What he's doing is hitting those harmonics, then immediately muting them with his fret hand. They sound the way they do in the song because he's using a lot of distortion. If you do them with clean tone or an acoustic they sound more like bells to an extent. There are actually 4 natural harmonics on the high E and B strings that ring the same as the notes in the intro to Thuggish Ruggish Bone by Bone Thugs and Harmony.

This album is 33 years old today… and still holds up against the test of time. The skull is their mascot “Vic Rattlehead” It’s a skull with its his eyes covered by a riveted visor, his mouth is clamped shut with hooks, and his ears are closed with metal caps. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. It’s a symbol of censorship.
