Rakim was more pivotal than the rest. He changed the game into what it is today. He made it to where MC’s would go back and put thought into their rhymes, also he sounded totally different than what they sounded like back then. Rappers after Rakim weren’t scared anymore to come out with different styles because rakim broke that mold. Listen to anyone in 1986. Then listen to rakim in 1986. They all had that rundmc/melle Mel/koolmoedee/llcoolj type of flow. Rakim in one day made them sound old school. He was maybe still is the freshest one to ever come out.

My personal 5 no order Pac, Em, Kendrick, Jay, Wayne. Those 5 I can listen to just about any tape or album from them and love it. In 2022 I STILL listen to the 5 names I mentioned. Honestly I believe Rakims fire died out a bit too fast. He was heading into Pacs level 100% but he dropped off way faster than Jay, Em or Wayne. You can say KRS, meth, Redman, Biggie etc but I personally never really bumped them besides Biggie and some Wutang joints.

Feel like his music and influence is purely nostalgia based at this point. I see way too many people jump out of their skin to defend 2pac, for having just listened to a lot of his catalogue, I don't get it. People be like: "2Pac is the greatest 2pac to ever 2pac. just listen to 2pac and you would understand that 2pac is 2pac, therefor 2pac is the GoaT!"

My favorite 5 would be El-p, Slug of Atmosphere, MF DOOM, 2Pac and Brotha Lynch since they're the artists I like the most and enjoyed in all my time listening to hip hop. Honorable mentions to everyone in the Wu, Outcast, Kanye, Mos Def, Kweli, P Monch, Black Thought and the Roots, Sean Price and BCC crew, Little Brother and Justus League, Jean Grae, Brother Ali, Aesop rock, Evidence, all of Doomtree, Common. Another thing that impresses me with Pac’s resume is music aside, he was simultaneously starring in movies in such a short period of time too. Juice, Poetic Justice, Gang Related, Bullet, Gridlocked. No other rapper then or even really now was at the top of the rap game and also starring in movies. His work ethic in such a short period is what I admire the most. I think if he never passed he would’ve for sure been on that Will Smith and Denzel level of Hollywood by the 2000’s.

And, it's not that he was the best at everything a rapper can be good at but rather the most influential on top of his talent. Many people consider MJ the goat in basketball, right? Well, he wasn't the best rebounder, blocker, passer or 3 point shooter now was he? No. But, he's still the goat. Same with Pac. He wasn't perfect. Had his flaws like any person/artist but still deserves goat nomination at least. Who do you consider the goat?

No particular order but definitely hard not to wanna have an honorable mentions like Rakim, Kendrick Lamar or J.cole, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dog, Dr.Dre, Ice Cube, Jadakiss, Redman, Method Man. I could name more but they all are amazing in there own way and are all unique and have brought so much to Rap and hip hop,almost makes it impossible to have any kind of Top 5 or 10 list.

Guru not getting mentioned is absolutely crazy…he has it all. Like most rappers have to be argued for the all around title but Gang Starr had it all. Guru’s mature attitude and beautiful flow, his words cut deep he didn’t need to rhyme orange with banana to ruin someone’s career he could end them simply with his point of view. Premier is the best producer in Hip Hop in my eyes. Every song, every album they ever made was perfect, nothing wack. Guru kept it coming until he died he never fell off. Not to mention he’s one of those rare guys that could freestyle off the top of his head and still shit on most people. Big L is so damn raw and talented as well he has the perfect look and sound, his style and flow is so perfected i hate when people act like he’s some basic punchline rapper. Aside from Kane in the 80s L was the damn punchline rapper. So many bit his style of rhyming it’s unbelievable.
