Jerry wrote a lot - but this is Layne’s baby. There is a story out that someone asked him where the inspiration came from & he pointed right to Demri (they had a very well, Love, Hate, Love relationship). Layne was not known for a lot of moving around stage - he didn’t need to…..he commanded the space he was in and was so damn captivating. And let’s just go ahead & address Jerry - best hair flips in the biz. Not to mention he matched Layne’s charisma via his guitar. I, too, feel like Jerry took on the big brother role (also a bit of a control freak-no judgement, but even in interviews….you can tell he is a driving force). This is evident in a lot of their live performances you will see him frequently ‘checking’ on Layne as well as Mike and Sean. This entire set is really good - I would almost say Layne at his best (before the deep dive with his demons). Everything was perfect from the production guys to the guys in Alice. Bleed the Freak from this set is also even better than studio version - worth checking out. 😊

A cool story since you mentioned William (Big Willy 😂) according to Jerry Cantrell (guitarist/main songwriter) when William auditioned for the band they asked him which song he wanted to sing and he chose Love, Hate, Love. They asked him if he was sure because that's their most difficult song to sing but he insisted. They did the song and he nailed it and on the spot they decided that he was the guy 😂 And out of the Big Willy era Alice, in my opinion, the most Alice sounding song is called So Far Under that was actually written by William AND he did the solo in it. Hes absolutely the guy for the job. If you havent checked that one out please do. Its awesome and showcases Big Willy.

Like seeing Nirvana in Olympia at some crappy club before Dave Grohl was even the drummer, or the guys who were in Mother Love Bone before they became Pearl Jam and seeing Pearl Jam when they were called Mookie Blaylock. So yes you can be jealous now lol.

That's how Layne created a unique sound that to this day no one can imitate. He bends his vowels, sometimes into more vowels, sometimes into something completely different. Other people picked up on it since they hit the radio, but it really takes Layne's voice and talent to make it work. Otherwise you get Sully from the band Godsmack. Also, you're missing out not digging into the live performances. I can't think of a single song Layne did not do better live than in studio.

I was at the show in Philly for this tour with SO many great bands. When Layne took the stage, like this, we were all about to get our collective minds blown! This is a gift for generations to come. Raw 4 guys Eerie Just earth-quaking on every level. We witnessed perfection and dirty rock in to our souls. Just them. No autotune. Not anything. 91 I believe....92 Anyway. It will NEVER EVER be duplicated. Cantrells one of the most underated lyricists and guitar players there is, was, will be. Everyone of his best friends are gone. So many bands, so many losses. Cantrell and Vedder cant go down that road in conversation. Eddie has claimed in many interviews that he hasn't and never will talk about or try to come to understand or REALLY believe Chris is gone. Chris Cornells eldest daughter Toni is a big sister to Eddies kids. Shes basically lived with them for years. So many deaths in grunge. So sad I can hear this on repeat and chill up every time. Layne WAS healthy here. You're are right. God bless them all. Really pray for those left behind. Its torture. I can't listen to Toni Cornell sing Hallelujah. I have to hit off. RIP all of you. What a jam is happening in heaven...

Sometimes friends have to babysit friends. I had a "best friend" that I had to do that to. I shouldn't have due to how things turned out. But we do what we think we have to do for our friends. Even if they turn out to have never really been your friend the whole time. I'm sure Lane and Jerry's friendship was different and actually real. But sometimes people just use you. Cool reaction. I wish you'd do all the reactions to songs you haven't heard before going back and listening to songs you have. But still here for the algorithm🤘🏼

Layne put that 'R' sound into random words all the time. It made it way into album songs, but live it was much more prominent. I'm not sure why he did it, or what he was going for. This performance is probably the best vocal performance Layne ever had, and one of the top 10 of the era.
@kikivon35017 ай бұрын
Being born and raised in Washington the reason for those random “R’s” may arise from the tendency for certain groups of people in Washington to use the R in weird spots in their vernacular. This tendency is very common among the lower socioeconomic groups. I know this because a lot of my own family speaks this way, so I’m not being judgmental. They will say I’m going to go waRsh my car. Layne was born and raised in a fairly affluent area of Kirkland and Bellevue, but his family was far from wealthy. Who knows, just a guess from a local?
