Hip hop is Blackpink’s core DNA. Teddy, their main producer and basically older brother figure to them, is a hardcore hip hop head and artist from back in the day. He was a member of a Korean hip hop group from the 90s to mid 2000s called 1TYM. He’s very responsible for their sound, general feeling, and attitude. The girls dont get many writing credits per se, but from what I can tell they have a lot of involvement in the collaborative process from start to finish. Like, they’re not just given songs/lyrics/outfits/choreo and told what to do. There’s a lot of input and back and forth before the final product is made.

Jennie was initially set to be the leader of pinkpunk(what BlackPink was supposed to be named) she made the decision to step down because of what happened with their senior group 2NE1 (legal issues involving banned medication used by one member, which put the group on an indefinite hiatus and eventually they disbanded). Jennie didn’t want to make any wrong decisions and jeopardize the group’s future, so as a preventative measure, she decided to forfeit taking the group leader position. The 4 of them run the show together, however, they entrust Jennie with most of the organizational stuff and important decision making, she speaks for the group to the higher ups, and guides the girls regarding their singing, and dancing (in their trainee days) even personal matters and finances. their company is known for being the one that introduced hiphop in mainstream music in korea back in the day, with groups like bigbang, so ever since they debuted they have always had an hiphop sound, they're just giving it more and more space. also no leader or main girl, they're jisoo, jennie, rose and lisa. jennie and lisa are the two that usually rap more but all four can rap and sing. they are currently the biggest girl group in the world, yes (billboar, the recording academy and rolling stones back it up.) they're continously setting new records for girl groups, for kpop acts and for artists in general (they're the most subscribed artist on youtube ever with more than 80 million subs among other things) if you want to know more about them and kpop you can watch their documentary on netflix, light up the sky, it's a great start.

Blackpink comes from a company called YG which is known in kpop to lean heavily towards hip hop/rap. Since their debut they've been working with Teddy Park as their main producer. He's grew up in California in the 90's so he's very influenced by american rap and hip hop and he certainly brought that into the group. He also had a very successful career as a kpop artist and a rapper himself. He really helped shape Blackpink into whom they are now and with time the girls have become more and more involved with the creative process of the group.

Everyone needs to read the Rolling Stone article on Blackpink in the June issue. Teddy Park gives them the basic song with theme lyrics. They then fill out the lyrics, determining what's in Korean and what's in English plus the arrangements. They have done this since their trainee days. In general the rap lines are written by Jennie and Lisa. Not sure how the tasks are divided among the 4, but Rose' said on the Zach Sang interview it was Jennie and Lisa mainly on the lyrics.

Ok guys, here's a "mini lesson" on "positions" in a K-Pop group, the terminology is different from the West, where the best person in a group is called LEAD. In K-Pop each member has their official "positions", which means their specific strengths in the group as assigned by their company.. Positions are ranked MAIN (most skilled), LEAD (also skilled) and SUB (skilled). Here are BLACKPINK's positions according to YG at the time of their debut: JENNIE: MAIN RAPPER, LEAD VOCAL JISOO: LEAD VOCAL, VISUAL ROSÉ: MAIN VOCAL, LEAD DANCER LISA: MAIN DANCER, LEAD RAPPER, SUB VOCAL, MAKNAE In addition there are two other positions called VISUAL and MAKNAE. MAKNAE means "youngest" and is assigned to the youngest member. VISUAL is a little tricky. It is assigned to the most aesthetically pleasing member according to Korean beauty standards. Koreans value beauty greatly, and place importance on specific features that are considered beautiful in Korea. High cheekbones, skin tone, hair color and style are all important, and the position VISUAL means that the person is the closest to a "Classically Korean Beauty". *note* There is another position called LEADER but BLACKPINK doesn't have one, which is unusual for a group. They trained together so long and treated each other like friends (sisters, really) that they felt no need to have a leader. That being said, over the years the lines have been blurred in regard to their positions. Although Jennie's official position is Main Rapper and Lisa's is Lead Rapper, Lisa has become the more popular rapper in the last few years and Jennie has been singing more. All four members are also vocalists, even the rappers.

I have noticed recently KZbin reactors showing such disrespect to Kpop artists by their delusional mindset of trying to "reach out" to them to collaborate on music or business projects, or to just go hang out with them at a cafe for coffee like they're best friends. WHAT???!!! These same KZbin reactors would NEVER, EVER make these same crazy statements to a Taylor Swift or Beyonce or Katy Perry or Drake or Justin Bieber.
