The song was about fame and how people change and become fake. As they had a few albums out by this point they saw people change around them. It also won a Grammy for best metal song. Which really was ironic.

At the time it came out I felt this was a throwback to prove they were still aggressive. The breakdown you're looking for is on a song called "Korea". I'll say the same thing I say in a comment on every reaction channel that covers a song from White Pony: White Pony is a perfect album. Every song is amazing and the track list plays like a weird dream. This is summer music for me. Night time, street lights, late sunsets, and people out and about in the streets. You could review every song on this album and get a different take on each one and Deftones fans will eat that shit up. Always down for White Pony.

Not every Deftones song has a formula, but every album does. Every album has low tempo songs with haunting lyrics that invade your head space. This is counter balanced by a couple of songs that are aggressive AF so you can work out your anger issues. Then there are songs that balance the two. This is because the band itself is a balance of styles. Stephen Carpenter is a true heavy metal lead guitarist, his riffs are heavy and dark and he plays prominently in tracks like Elite. Abe Cunningham is more of a numetal drummer and leans heavily toward the rhythmic hip hop side of the genre. He doesn’t use a double bass kicker and prefers to focus on upper rhythmic beats, think Digital Bath. Chino on the other hand can cross both sides with a beautiful voice capable of almost any range including metal screams that are totally unique to him and almost impossible to mimic. The cool thing is he can switch up his vocals from aggressive to melodic almost instantly. If you have seen them live you would agree that it is fascinating to see. God rest his soul, Chi Cheng was an incredible bassist who also leaned into more funky and groovy baselines. His style famously conflicted with Carpenter’s style. Current bassist Sergio Vega sticks to Chi’s style. That said this band is a melting pot of styles which is why they appeal to such a wide audience and why listening to an album is like an insane therapy session. My favorite band of all time!!

This is from White Pony" (2000) and it follows the track "Digital Bath". Deftones have never been just "mellow" or just "aggressive", ALL their albums have that contrast where you can find a "chill" tune mixed with heavier ones and others in between. Also, Chino is known for his screams, and those are always present in their albums. Actually, the whole concept of "contrast" is a signature of their sound.

Deftones' song "Elite" is about the process of growing up, discovering yourself and maturing to your fullest potential. He encourages listeners to realize their true potential and deeply embrace it, and it is through this process that they will eventually gain control of their lives. The song emphasizes that it is necessary to go through some struggles or phases in life before you can fully let go and immerse yourself in new clarity and purpose. The chorus perfectly sums up this message with its repeated refrain of "When you're mature, you'll bleed out of control" suggesting that the individual must go through the necessary process of growth, change, and emotional maturity in order to take full control of their life.
