Funny story: Went to see Disturbed live in 2019. They played this song last or second to last, and before they started playing it, David (the lead singer) said: "I just want to clarify something before this next song: it has a big part where I yell and curse at an abusive mother, I just wanted to make sure you realize it's a metaphor, I have the most amazing mother in the world" And the second he said that, the entire crowd started cheering and chanting "David's mom! David's mom!"

However, the band has disavowed that this song is about literal child abuse, and that it is instead about a metaphoric abuse. Lead singer David Draiman explained to the Phoenix New Times: ...the screamed psychodramas in metal hits like "Down With The Sickness" ... are merely inspired by personal history, not a literal journal of his own tortured upbringing. "I'm really talking about the conflict between the mother culture of society, who's beating down the child yearning for independence and individuality, and the submission of the child."[9] The "abuse" segment is not included in the radio edit or the music video. The lyrics are about what David Draiman said was "It speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission."
@firefox57143 жыл бұрын
So you mean as in it is trying to reflect the imbalance of control how the mother desires control over the child and the child desires their independence. I as a person who was born in 2000 know how it feels to have someone else make every single damn decision in your personal life. Slowly, it becomes more and more agitating and hateful. You want independence and control over yourself. Think of it as riding backseat while something else controls your life and you see yourself do what you personally don't want to do so you want to take control and make your own choices but you have to overpower the opposing force to have independence.

I don't care what the band intended. I will determine what this song means to me and it's child abuse.

Yet, the individual will ultimately decide what this song means to them. Music works like that. Despite the bands intentions, I, like many others will receive this song differently than others. Love the insight you've provided! Thank you!

I thought it was about seeing child abuse when he worked as a nurse in a Chicago ER... But he said many things back then he changed the reasons for writing or performing!!!???
@gaiarockchick3 жыл бұрын
Weird. I've always thought it was about drug abuse. But when you include the "Mummy don't hit me....die you whore" part it hits different.. That's intense, and gives the song a completely different tone as it becomes Mummy issues which can lead to horrendous abuse and abuser culture. Take the "spoken word" part out tho, and to me it's drugs....because that's MY sickness. Yours might be gambling, or food addiction. It takes you over until there is very little of the original you left....and then it seems that mum and dad approve, or they had addiction issues to pass to you.

The breakdown that caused you to hesitate is a beautiful metaphor and a play on words by David the lead singer. Yeah when I heard this version of it the first time, I came up w the same conclusion as Smoke. I was completely, completely torn up by this song. Thinking how could a mother treat her child like this to bring out the hatred. But then my own son told me the meaning of it metaphorically, and I felt so much better about it. I know I could never abuse my son that way and so I guess I took it so literally. I’m very glad it wasn’t about his childhood abuse. ❤️love the analysis on this one by both of you. You both brought two very valid thoughts on its meaning.

@lilwoowoowoozie92423 жыл бұрын
first off, good on you guys for doing the lyric vid instead of the mv since the mv doesn't have the last part about the mother and child. That part is a metaphorical 'mother society' who tells you that you have to conform to society and its rules and stuff and the kid fighting back is us fighting back for our individuality since individuality is kinda the philosophy of the term 'disturbed' bc it's how society views you if you're different from everyone else

Down with the Sickness, what is the sickness, it's explained in the chorus as madness; "Madness is the gift that has been given to me." Taken literally, one could juxtapose the nature vs nurture argument, in that how we are raised definitely helps develop our psyches. Taken metaphorically, one sees society as the 'mother' figure and that life itself is what drives us to madness. I personally think this particular song can be construed in either way and that is one of the beautiful things about music. A song can mean something to one person and something else entirely to another person.
