Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel, who wrote this song, shared the disturbed version on his social media. It’s the only cover of his songs that he has ever shared. And he had said that his original version from the 60s was a warning, but the disturbed version is the rage at a warning unheeded. Paul Simon also said that the lead singer from disturbed was born to sing the song. He truly loved what he did with it. And that I think is the biggest compliment ever.

And that's true for so many Metal artists. There is always a misjudgment on them. Quite a lot of them are down to earth, cool people who just love music and creating music that can spark something in the listener to where we can feel we're not alone in our views. I love all kinds of music, Metal being one of my top favorite genres.
@SuicidebyYourMom

@@JustTanya., this is spot on. I was aged 3 when I first started going to shows and many of these were metal shows. Metal bands often especially get excited when they see people bring their children to shows; seeing a younger generation cutting their teeth on their tunes. I am certain it is a very exciting feeling. Being young often came with the luck of getting to meet many band members from a great deal of metal bands, especially if they were playing a smaller venue. To date, the nicest interactions I have had would have to be with Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse, the members of Cradle of Filth (though Dani doesn't go on much) and the members of Between the Buried and Me. Not everyone in the rock scene is G.G. Allen!

@@bluejay9940 The guy he throughout the window hit David first. He threw a weight at David's chest and knocked the air out of him because David was lifting more weight than he was. The guy was a senior and David was a freshman. He probably broke 1 of David's ribs. David only set 1 thing on fire and that was the rabbi's van. David was expelled from the school for having a Sports Illustrated or at least that's the reason they gave when they expelled him.

@@mickisitterding5621 yeah I’ve read several articles and interviews with him. He was classically trained as a synagogue cantor but got kicked out of 3 different Jewish schools. He went to school for pre-law and got into several law schools, but criminal law was the only thing that interested him and he couldn’t stomach the thought of defending a guilty person so he didn’t go. He became a nursing home administrator instead, and got fired from one nursing home for using the company printers and fedex account to make/send promotional material for his band 😂. He started at another nursing home but then Disturbed got big so he quit.

There is actually a HUGE clue in the last verse that yes, these are 100% the original lyrics. " . . . and tenement halls." We don't use the word "tenement" anymore. If any lyric was going to be updated, they would have changed "tenement" to "project". I'm very glad they didn't.

The arrangement behind this was off the charts and superbly done.......this band gets top kudos for this effort on recreating a classic song from the 60's....it was done in a much different format but held true to the original in lyrics and message of the song.....just a magnificent job

The first time I heard this version, it was during the collective wake of the Chapecoense / Brazil Soccer-Soccer Team that it suffered a terrible air accident in Colombia, where more than 40 people lost their lives. A song that was written many moon ago, that you can correlate with today's climate and how we communicate with each. You can also interpret "Neon God" with technology and how it has taking over our lives, I understand this was written years ago and has a different meaning, but it's funny how you can connect a song written years ago and it relates so much to our times. Land Of Confusion is also another cover by Disturbed that also could have been written yesterday! As the lyrics coincides within the realm we live today.

The lyrics were verbatim. Simon & Garfunkel approved of Disturbed’s rendition and told them they made the song their own. Simon & Garfunkel added a link to their Facebook page so everyone could go listen to Disturbed’s version. Neon God refers to technology. Talking without speaking ......texting....hearing without listening......we all do this we hear but we’re too involved in “me” to listen to the message. God: David do you want the voice of an angel or the voice of the devil? David: YES !!!

To me, this song represents loss of communication and contact within society, and the increasing isolation of each individual within society. They create beauty that is never shared or appreciated. Every individual is trapped in their own personal hell. At the end, the phrase "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls" says to me that graffiti are the words of the prophets. I actually think Simon & Garfunkel would mean exactly what Smokey said if they had written this song today. When it was written that stuff wasn't down there, only posters etc. Unless you are thinking graffiti that says something like "Talk to each other!" or "TV/Technology is killing us" in that case yes, that would be a warning to mankind.

“Graffiti are the words of the prophets.” That’s definitely what that line means, and if you look at it more closely, it has an even deeper subtext. The people who write graffiti on subway walls, and especially in tenement halls, are considered the lowest of society. The young, the poor, the homeless, the “crazy”- especially for the really out-there graffiti like the stuff Genesis mentioned: “technology is killing us!” etc. This song says that those people and their words are not something we should look down on in disdain, but that they are actually Prophets, delivering holy Wisdom to the world. Perhaps even that only those who are considered the lowest of society are even *able* to fully understand such holy Truths. The only ones with the clarity of vision to perceive them, whether from an actual divine source, or just from a deep understanding of the world and where the patterns are leading us, due to their many experiences in the harshness of the world.

I am just blown away every time I hear this. I mean nobody even knew Dave had pipes like this. Listening to this I'm pretty sure he could have been an opera singer if he'd wanted to. He has the talent he could have chosen any genre he wanted. But he chose metal. And while Im not a huge disturbed fan (Don't get me wrong, I like em enough I just like other acts more.) I'm hugely impressed by the fact that he gravitated towards metal and also payed homage to its roots with this gem. Thats about all the input I'm willing to give rn. On a side note its also paraphrased in Rush's spirit of the radio. The lyrics "for the words of the prophets were written on the studio walls, concert hall, echos with the sounds of salesmen" It took me a while to catch that. I just thought that was neat.

Simply amazing! One of the rarest ocasions where the cover surpasses the original by far. You should check out the live performance of this song in Conan O´Brien in your spare time. Totally worth it.

I love the Braves shirt. I'm old but Chipper Jones is my fav player of all times! Those years of the Braves were so amazing! I have been to see Disturbed three times. When I hear they are coming I race for the best tickets a bailable. Here in Nashville we have great shows here but I must say Disturbed is the best performance I have seen.

Yes. Lyrics are the same This is Simon & Garfunkel lyrics "And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence."

Honestly, anyone who heard more than The Sickness should be aware of the power of his voice. Not even on some of the slower/more melodic stuff they have did like Darkness, but just in general you can tell when he's not going crazy with silly throat growls.

By far my favorite cover of this song. There is a video of him doing this cover on Conan O'Brian as sell. Was amazing live as well. Apparently he was sick during the Conan show and still knocked it out of the park.

Guys, I really love your sense of humor. I had to sub. You *MADE* me do it. I'm gonna go tell Garfunkel's mommy on you! LOL. Don't quote me on this, but I believe David (the vocalist) is a classically trained opera singer. And yes, the words are verbatim.

Loved the look on your faces at the start then change with the rising octaves smiling and moving then to the fry praying to the gods they made. You should go back and watch. I have watched over 200 reaction videos to this just to watch the facial reactions.

First time here. And you guys are great. Made me laugh and then you shut up and let the music flow. Your commentary afterwards was thoughtful and well said. I am a 66 year old metal momma. AC/DC I love (the new album is great)! But David raised the bar quite a bit with this song. I have to say Down With The Sickness is pretty good. I have subscribed!

Fun fact. David (The lead singer) Was raised in an orthodox Jewish household and was trained to be a Torah chanter (What many refer to as the old testament) and thats I think where he draws inspiration for his clean vocals... they sound very prayer like

I made this comment under the Toadies "Possum Kingdom", but I'll make it here as well. You guys were talking about songs that sound upbeat but have dark lyrics on that reaction, well you guys should react to Third Eye Blind "Semi-Charmed Life". Be sure to watch a lyric video for it, and really read the lyrics. It'll blow your mind. Great reaction guys. :)

The duet from the 60's were Neil Simon & Art Garfunkel. The front man from Disturbed! David Dragan trained as a Cantor and has some of the purest vocals I've ever heard. His grandfather was a Cantor in the Synagogue in Jerusalem.

Such a powerful voice! The song was sung verbatim from Simon & Garfunkel. S&G are from NY, so they are used to subways and tenements. Halloween songs...Van Halen "Runnin' With The Devil" as a tribute to Eddie Van Halen! ACDC "Hells Bells" or "Highway To Hell"; Disturbed "Down With The Sickness"! Probably not what you are looking for, but great songs!
