Strother Martin giving the speech at the start of the song. From the movie Cool Hand Luke. The intro and outro whistle by Axl are the old American Civil War song When Johnny Comes Marching Home. The interlude quotes a Peruvian Shining Path guerilla officer. This song are the only one that featured the original drummer Steven Adler. The rest was done by Matt Sorum.

Hollywood don't try to overthink it. According to the band it is a protest song on war , referring to all war as "civil war" cause war only "feeds the rich while it buries the poor". Duff McKagan said , " I went in a peace march , when i was a little kid with my mom. I was like 4 years old , for Martin Luther King. And thats where the line , 'Did you wear the black arm band when they shot the man who said : Peace could last forever ?". It's just true life expieriences , really.

Even though we had GnR Lies, that was just an EP, so we had waited since Appetite for this release, and it was 2 albums. Use Your Illusion I & II were incredible, and still are. It was also an epic time for music, as we had like a dozen releases all released withing a few months of each other. Simply a great time for music, and a great time to be in college and angsty. Lol

Guns N' Roses got their name from the fact that it was originally the union of Hollywood Rose and LA Guns, two big bands on the scene in that day. Also, to quote Freud, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." The song is literally a call for peace on Earth. If you think about when the band grew up, it was in the aftermath of WWII and the rise of American exceptionalism in the 50s, followed by the wars in Korea and Vietnam. At the time they were working on this album, the Middle East conflict was heating up again, shortly after Iran-Contra. All they'd seen, it seems, was people being killed in wars that only made the rich richer. So they pulled from Lennon and are asking to give peace a chance.

The "Use Your Illusion" albums by Guns N' Roses, released in 1991, have distinctive album covers. "Use Your Illusion I" features a detail from Raphael's "The School of Athens" painting, which depicts various philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians from classical antiquity. The cover of "Use Your Illusion II" features a modified version of a painting by Mark Kostabi, an artist known for his surreal and thought-provoking works. The modified version for the album cover is titled "Time Fades Away." Both covers are quite intricate and visually striking, adding to the mystique of the albums.

Thanks to a cool record store employee I was turned onto Guns N Roses very early. He told me the Live Like a Suicide EP was coming out and that I had to hear this band. I picked it up at midnight the day it came out and rest is history. I saw them twice on the Use Your Illusion tour. Once with Metallica and once as a solo headliner. With Metallica was at the Pontiac Silver Dome in what has become known as the night of a million boobs. Between sets women lifted their shirts to get on the jumbotron, as they do at all metal shows, but it was so popular with the audience that it went on way longer then normal. This of course pissed off Axl since they came on late technically. Metallica came on first and just blew them away. Axl, as he did many times on this tour, just left the stage at one point. He threw down the mic and was gone for like twenty minutes. Never forget that night. To be fair though when I saw them later on that tour with only them as the headliner they were second to none. Interestingly Metallica by themselves kind of sucked on that tour.
