I was driving back from a Prince Concert in Tallahassee Florida on my way home to Dothan Alabama. We pulled over at a little bar in the middle of nowhere to use the restroom. We sat down at the bar to wait out the person using the restroom. We had purple glitter on us from the show. A man turned and said " where have you been to have glitter all over your clothes? I said A Prince Concert. We talked for a few about Prince's guitar playing. Finally he said, you should come see me play sometime, I'm not that level of playing but I'm not bad. I just shook my head and said that's cool. After a few seconds he said, I'm Hank jr. by the way, nice to meet you! I almost fell off the barstool 😂 He's sooo down to earth. ❤️

Hank Williams, Jr. life story is fascinating. He was just a toddler when his father died and as he grew, his mother and his ‘’handlers ‘’ tried to force him into becoming a duplicate of his father. Eventually he rebelled ad developed his own style. He once went on a hunting trip to the mountains with a friend and the friend’s son. He slipped and literally fell 500 feet down the side of the mountain. He barely survived and his entire face had to be rebuilt. That is why he wears the beard and the sunglasses. He built a successful career of his own, but still gives respect to his father. If you watched Monday Night Football a few years ago, you probably have heard him. He sang the Monday Night Football theme for years. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL, A MONDAY NIGHT PARTY. This song has two meanings. The FAMILY TRADITION refers to the ‘’country establishment ‘’ traditions, but it also references Hank,Sr who was a bit of an outlaw himself. He was a heavy drinker and was addicted to to drugs. He died at twenty nine, so young, but was the leading figure in moving country music int the mainstream of American culture. Hank, Sr. was a genius songwriter and singer, who was granted a citation for his achievements by the Pulitzer Prize Committee. Artists from every genre have recorded his songs from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones to Elvis and probably every country singer who ever picked up a mike. His catalog is deep and vast.

Country music serves much the same cultural purpose as blues. It is a voice of the common man expressing his worries, sorrows and joys. In the case of Country, it is centered on mostly rural or small town blue collar people rather than people in the cities. There are strong parallels. The country "sound" in addition to influences from rock and blues is also strongly influenced by Scots-Irish folk music because it came from areas heavily settled by that ethnic group. You will hear this most clearly in the related genre Bluegrass.

Hank Jr's mom and others raised him to be the spitting image of Hank Sr. He used to be clean and dapper, and perform his dad's songs. But then he kinda had a bit of an identity crisis, and broke away from it. A lot disliked him going his own way. That's partially eluded to in the line "lately some of my kinfolk (country singers) have disowned some other boys and me". During his identity crisis he ended up having an accident where he fell 500ft down the side of a mountain and busted his head open and nearly died. His song "All in Alabama" is a song about that event.. He then started wearing a beard and shades to cover up the scars from that accident.

Great choice and great reaction. You guys brought up the Outlaw movement in country. Thats pretty much when country started adding more blues and rock elements compared to the older country music from say the 50s and 60s. When i think outlaws in country, Hank Jr, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash all fit that category, some of those artists i grew up on. And that outlaw sound helped make country more mainstream in the 80s and 90's.

Rufus Payne met Hank Williams when Hank was eight years old, and legend has it that he would come around and play Hank's guitar, showing Hank how to improvise chords. His influence in exposing Williams to blues and other African American influences helped Williams successfully fuse hillbilly, folk and blues into his own unique style, which in turn expanded and exposed both white and black audiences to the differing sounds.

I would still have it in the country genre. Country isn't completely seperate from blues. There's often a lot of blues elements in country. Especially with Hank Jr's music after he decided to go his own direction. I would suggest Hank Jr's "Country Boy Can Survive". It's basically a country anthem, and probably his most well known song. I think it was released in the 80's, but the music video for it was made much later.. But I personally also recommend "All In Alabama" which is related to his 500ft fall off the side of the mountain.
