His Dad Hank Williams was probably the greatest Country singer of all time, he was also a hard drinker and hell raiser and he died at 29. So when Hank Jr. says he is following a family tradition, that is what he is talking about it.
@keithgraham85882 жыл бұрын
Only the chorus alludes to that, the rest of the song however is a rebellion song because Jr. liked to mix southern rock with honkey tonk and people in Nashville didn't like it.

Just here to say I was going to say this same thing. :) I guess it's not obvious that Jr is a 2nd person and not the same Hank Williams to folks who don't know. But yeah he's the son of one of the founders of country music and Jr actually helped to push country into a new era (that folks where uncomfortable with and therefore put pressure on his lifestyle choices).

The family that is questioning him in the song is the Country Music family. Also if you didn’t know Hank nearly died in the 70’s when he fell over 400’ while hiking up in the mountains. At first he wasn’t expected to live. He had a badly fractured skull and his face was badly mangled. That is where his now traditional look comes from with the full beard, sunglasses and hat. He did that to cover all the scars and had to go through quite a few surgeries and a couple of years of physical therapy etc to recover.

Awesome drinking sing-a-long song for sure. This song is also a huge hit at Hanks concerts. Over the years audiences have started their own little chant add ons the the song particularly through the chorus. It typically goes like this: Don’t ask me Hank why do you drink. Audience: To get drunk Hank why do you roll smoke. Audience: to get stoned. Why do you live like the songs that you wrote. Audience: to get laid. The whole crowd will sing loud as they can through the whole song, but experienced Hank Jr concert goers will belt out the add in lines during the chorus.

In concert, the chorus ALWAYS turns into a call and response with the audience. When Hank sings "Why do you drink" the crowd answers "TO get drunk". And "why do you roll smoke" gets "To get stoned" and "Why must you live out the songs that you wrote" is answered "To get laid" Of course, the same thing happens when a bunch of drunks are sitting around a fire listening to it on a phone. Or so I've heard.

Until the 90's when technology allowed for it, he had never sung with his daddy. They sliced video together of both Sr. & Jr. Singing There's a tear in my beer. Hank Sr. Died when Junior was only 3. Hanks father is the considered the father of country music. He is a legend. He was a notorious bad-ass that drank, did drugs, and broke all the rules. Hank Sr. is considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time. He changed music forever. Not just country music. He sadly died at the age of 29 just when he was hitting his prime. He left behind a catalog of songs in his short time that is almost unrivaled. He was so prolific and talented he's still appreciated to this day. While there were many stars that came before him, he is considered by many to be the first country music super star that transcended the genre. Hank Jr. is a mega star in his own right. He came on country music in late 70s and 80s and had some monster hits. His son, Hank the 3rd, is also a talented singer and song writer. His son actually looks and sounds more like Hank Sr. than Jr. does. They do indeed have a great family tradition.

The song is really about two different types of family tradition. It begins "Country music singers/Have always been a real close family/But lately some of my kinfolks/Have disowned a few others and me/I guess it's because/I kinda changed my direction/Lord, I guess I went and broke their family tradition" That was the general country music family tradition where many partied hard and drank but not many were into drugs, especially hard drugs. Hank's father was a true party commando, and Hank Jr. took it to a whole new level. Hank Williams Sr. struggling with alcoholism, the artist used a number of drugs, including: cocaine, morphine, chloral hydrate and heroin. Hank Williams Jr. embraced the outlaw life. Williams was already existing on a steady diet of booze and pills when he fell off the side of a mountain in 1975, but during his recovery his addiction to painkillers only worsened. As he, and some others in country music, became more into harder drugs the result was "But lately some of my kinfolks" (as in other country singers of the era)"/Have disowned a few others and me/I guess it's because/I kinda changed my direction/Lord, I guess I went and broke their family tradition." Both Hank Williams Jr. and Sr. were true party commandos. That was the Williams family tradition.

Hank Jr. was the first concert I spent my own money to see - I was @ 14 at the time and it was great! You should check out ‘All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight’ it’s another fun one. In addition to his own father, the LEGENDARY Hank Sr., he’s also speaking to the country music community of singers, business people, producers, musicians and fans - basically telling them to not be hypocritical, that he’s not doing anything they aren’t doing, he’s just doing it openly and without apology. Heck, his own father produced at least one illegitimate child and pretty much drank and drugged himself to death before he was thirty. Hank (or Bocephus, as he’s known by many fans), was part of a sort of movement in country music known as ‘outlaw’ country. He makes no apologies or excuses for the person he is.
