Another part of this song that the most people younger generation don't know. His father was a very heavy drinker and country singer too it actually was part of what led to his early death. When hank jr was just a little boy. So when he says family tradition. He's not only talking about fellow country singers. He is talking about his father too.

Honky Tonk is a word used for bars,or night clubs,usually southern rock or country music were generally played there.

Country music had it's own little rat pack back in the 70's and 80's, and Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson, used to be all best friends and running buddies. The line in the beginning about they disowned some of the boys and me, that was a subtle shoutout to them. A honky-tonk is just a slang word for a country & western bar.
