Alex Lifeson is a victim of playing the glamour instrument, and everyone having 100 'favourite guitarists' and not necessarily the same for drummers or bassists. He's absolutely overlooked and underrated.

Dude, three masters telling each other, “hold my beer!” No one was left to hold any one’s beer so they just rocked it and tried to out do each other. This is hands down my favorite version of this song!

I saw them twice live and it's magical❤ Fun story. I grew up in a small town outside Toronto and one day we were in the park and we heard music coming from the factories so we got up on some garbage dumpsters and watched through the window. We were watching them recording😮 They noticed us and came out talked to us about music and Alex and Geddy gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks. Great guys really humble❤ That was in 1982 I was 12 I'm now 53😂

Fun story about the origins of Rush. This song was recorded with original drummer John Rutsy who was much more straightforward of a drummer than Neil. Nobody really had picked it up, but a female DJ from WMMS in Cleveland decided to throw it on as she needed a long song to play so she could take a bathroom break.

It's crazy to think that the boys were like 58-59 years old at this time. And they STILL kept going for another half decade after this. It's crazy to think that rock n roll had only been around for 20-25 years when this song came out in '74. According to band lore, working class Cleveland is where the band got their first big break, with this very song, on WMMS 100.7 FM. A 7 minute "bathroom break" song that gave the DJ enough time to answer nature's call. Thank you Cleveland!!!

This was at the end of a three hour show. Three guys in their late 50's showing you how it is done! The reggae at the beginning was a change up of a song that they have been performing since 1974. No, they are no longer touring. They retired in 2015 as Neil wanted to be with his new family and he was also feeling the fatigue of drumming for that many years. Geddy Lee once said that there is no Rush without all three of them. The last part of the song was Cygnus Book 1 Cheers 🇨🇦

Great review guys keep up the good work. Below is a little background information that you might find interesting: Rush as a band was always evolving always trying new things, and in my opinion where always always ahead of their time. A few years ago i watched a documentary on them (there are several now but this was an early one), where they talked about the evolution of their music. There first two albums were moderately successful. Nothing earth shattering but enough to get them booked as opening acts for larger bands (Kiss, Aerosmith and a few others) throught the middle 70's. Their 3rd album Caress of Steel (which hard core RUSH fans will tell you was great) was a commerical flop. Their record company was threatening to drop them, which in 1976 would have end of the band. They were given a chance to do one more album if it didnt sell they would be dropped and that would most likely be the end of RUSH. Now I think most people in that situation would write few catchy radio friendly songs just to try to try to keep their contract. RUSH did the opposite. The three of them decided, 'Screw it we are going to make the music we want to make no matter what anyone else says." And the world got 2112 the most prog non radio friendly album. But it was their biggest hit to date going 3x platinum, from that point on they were never threatend again and were allowed to make the music they wanted to make. As you know they were all highly skilled musicians who enjoyed various types of music and began working those different genres into their music along with the time shifts they were already famous for. You have covered a lot of their classics but some of their later music you might enjoy too I would recommend Roll The Bones (this one i think you will really like as their is a suprise about 2/3 of the way through the song that comes out of left field that i think you will both find very interesting) Bravado Nobody's Hero (this was a personal song for Neil) Marathon Middleton Dreams Headlong Flight (recently Geddy was asked hypothetically if you could be back on stage again with Alex and Neil and get to play one song which would it be, this was his choice) LIve Recommendations Xandu (Exit Stage Left Tour) Spirit of Radio (live in Toronto 1984)

You guys have got to check out the live version of Bytor and the Snow Dog that is on Rush's first double live album...All the World's a Stage. You won't find any actually filmed live version, just the audio only with album cover art still frame version. I would say that it is Rush at their most extreme...not holding anything back, and just doing everything they want to do. The boys do a much extended and very psychedelic solo on the track that was never recorded anywhere else that I am aware of...you really have to hear it to believe it. Not for nothing, the other track on that side of the double live album is In the End...and that version is really freaking incredible and worth reacting to.

I've been a Rush fan ever since someone gave me a copy of their first album- Fly By Night- when it first came out. I've been a Rush freak ever since. I even named one of my sons Neil Alexander after Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson. I've only seen Rush live twice- the Subdivisions tour, and the Snakes And Arrows tour. Both shows were about 3 hours, with no opening acts. Both shows were fantastic, and they jammed this hard on almost everything. I'm so glad you guys have covered so much of their stuff.

Although there will never be anyone capable of filling Neil's shoes, Dave Grohl is the 1st one to come to mind to sit in for NP, but he stated "‘I’m not physically or musically capable, but thanks for the offer.’ ". Two others would be Mike Portnoy, and (for obvious reasons), Danny Carey. Stewart Copeland is another that springs to mind. Just remember what Stewart Copeland said, amidst all the drummers who were invited to Neil's funeral..."We are all our 2nd favorite drummer".

@11:11 Goosebumps to this Cleveland boy. Growing up in the 1970s as a teen in this town, we loved our WMMS 101 FM. "The Buzzard" since those early days. Cleveland with MMS, and Belkin Bothers Productions, The Agora, and us locals were instrumental, in this band, among others, with Breaking into an Audience. We Loved our ROCK & Roll and still do. We are ashamed of the dream we had for the Rock Hall. So sad that the greats we wanted enshrined are still outside the gates. This Genre was the Target for the concept we began on WMMS. Rush Was Rock and still is rock. Add an Adjective if you need, It's still Rock.

My favorite live version of a song by Rush is YYZ from the clockwork angels tour. The Rush in Rio live version of YYZ is incredible (that's the version where the crowd sings along to the song despite the song having no lyrics) but the Clockwork Angels version includes a small orchestral string section, as that album included many songs that had those instruments present. I like YYZ, but I love YYZ with some violins and instruments added into the mix.

The Band stopped touring in 2015 because Neil wanted to be with his young daughter. A cuople of years later he got daignosed with cancer and then passed away in 2020. The band has not toured or made any music since then, but Geddy and Ale has played some songs for special occasions like the Taylor Hawkins tribute. I think Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Danny Carey played drums with them. Chad Smith did working man and Danny did YYZ. Check them out. As a big Rush fan and a Tool fan, it would be fantastic if Danny Carey did something with them.

GREAT reaction gents!! Three incredible guys, Alex & Geddy at 57, Neil at 58 - so not young - absolutely KILLING it - and this is the final encore after a nearly 3 hour concert! Rush got better as they got older! Saw this and every tour since '97, and each time was setting a new bar in performance! (Slight exception on the R40 tour in 2015 - Geddy's voice was finally showing it's age - with some songs...but their musicianship never declined!) It has be categorically said by Alex & Geddy - without Neil, there is NO Rush! And I agree. Cheers!

I would pick Mike Portnoy from Deam Theater over Danny Carey to fill in for Peart. He has covered a few songs from Rush, and he killed it.

There are bands out there where it's just fine to sit at home and enjoy their album. Rush is not one of these bands I had an amazing experience every time I saw them live. R.I.P. Neil! I have not heard of another drummer that can compete with Neil.

Primus did a whole tour of just Rush music. It was called A Tribute to Kings and it was AWSOME! Herb could tour with Rush. Larnell Lewis could pull it off too!

If you liked this LIVE performance...you would LOVE the following LIVE performance from the same show... - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER.

Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater would be the guy if anyone. He is one of the biggest Neil Peart fans and pretty much knows every song. A lot of the other drummers you mention can do it, but I don't know that they would have the enthusiasm to do it in a way Portnoy would.

Having just finished My Effin Life by Geddy Lee ,it’s pretty stated Rush as a band is finished . That said ,Geddy didn’t say he and Alex wouldn’t ever perform live again. The implication by Geddy is that it would look something like “ an evening of Rush songs with Geddy and Alex with guest drummer or drummers ,so and so.” Unfortunately,Geddy got put off by some drummers contacting them with Peart barely gone for two months begging to jam with them. I would give Geddy and Alex another year or so and we might see something put together .
