"Hair metal" gets thrown at most popular 80s metal that isn't thrash, although it more accurately should be another term for the genre "glam metal." It's a much more commercial, melodic hard rock/metal that focused on image(thus the hair not only long but at a time sprayed big, plus makeup and all), lyrics focused on girls, parties, cars, living wild, generally more superficial subjects but for an energetic, fun, party vibe. Got big when MTV was big and took advantage of the video format.

The funny thing is, as you go down the thrash rabbit hole, you do realize that they were kinda medium tempo compared to more obscure bands from that time and especially THE BANDS THAT CAME AFTERWARDS. Ain't saying Slayer isn't fast, but off the cherry pick popular tier - Sepultura and Kreator definetly were faster. And then you have the crazy newschool wave of 2010s thrash like Lost Society, Dust Bolt or Evile. ;)
