Steely Dan named themselves after an object in that staple of Beat Literature, Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. The “Steely Dan” in question was a steam-powered, mechanical dildo. Right away, the name suited the music. From, The Lion by Tyler Roland

Fun Facts: This was Steely Dan's first single. It became a hit in both the US and UK, earning the group a lot of press coverage. The group's sound was very unusual, and when asked to explain it, they sometimes described it as "smart rock." -Waylon Jennings, Falco, Tori Amos and Smash Mouth have all covered this song -and This song Was In The Rhythm Video Game Guitar Hero World Tour.

Steely Dan is an American rock band formed in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York in 1971 by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Originally having a full band lineup, by the end of 1974, Becker and Fagen chose to stop playing live and continue Steely Dan as a studio-only duo, utilizing a revolving cast of session musicians.

Steeley Dan is it's own genre. There is no one like them. A mix of rock/jazz/blues/funk and pop. It a fusion sound. They can do it all. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (RIP) were the brains behind the band, especially Donald. Dozens of great songs. Great reaction..

Guys, the Dan is their own genre… no band has combined so many different types of music into hits, and just great songs. They did AB I think once, and the Midnight Special. And “Steely Dan” is the name of a dildo featured in the William Burroughs book, Naked Lunch. This song is about the negative cycles we put ourselves through; crime, being involved in an abusive relationship, and gambling… where we fully realize what’s going wrong, but decide to ‘go around’ again!

@jamesdignanmusic2765
@jamesdignanmusic2765 Ай бұрын
Very "clever" rock. Elements of jazz, virtuoso musicianship, arty without veering into prog. "Musicians' musicians" - known and revered more by other bands than by the public at large. No band really approaches Steely Dan in sound (cross Hall and Oates style with Supertramp's dexterity and you might reach the same ballpark). A deep well to dig into, too. Try "Rikki (Don't Lose That Number)" or "Dirty Work". And you're pretty close - this song's about the three addictions of violence, sex, and gambling. BTW, "Teenage Kicks" was a 70s hit for The Undertones - "She's Not There" was a 60s hit for The Zombies.

This song was my introduction to Steely Dan! I raided my parents' record collection looking for music and found a Steely Dan Greatest Hits compilation. Looked interesting, so I put the record on the table. This 50 year old metalhead has been a fan for about 35 years now! BTW, if you would like to explore some jazz, I might start with Dizzy Gillespie "A Night In Tunisia". It's an amazing instrumental piece featuring one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of his age. I played trombone in a jazz band in high school and that was one of my favorite songs that we played.

Steely Dan kinda has their own genre. definitely funk and jazz inspired but has rock elements and amazing song writing. try anything off AJA. every song is great. also, side note Michael McDonald did some backing vocals on some of their songs. Any they used many musicians on all their albums. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were the founding members and continued through their catalog. I got to see them in Vegas about a month before Walter passed. i got lucky. great show.

The Undertones are a seminal Irish pop punk band, "Teenage Kicks" is their signature hit. It's an ode to the anxiety and elation of being a teenager. Famous English DJ John Peel esteemed it as his favorite song of all time. It's a classic power pop punk song, definitely recommended. "Get Over You" being perhaps their other key track. BTW my picks for best Steely Dan albums are Countdown To Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic.

An amazing jazz/funk/pop/rock fusion band that opened for Steely Dan not long ago is Snarky Puppy. Watch the video of them recording their masterpiece "Lingus" live in the studio with an audience mixed with the giant band. The album We Like It Here is, in my opinion, their best. "Lingus" is an instrumental with legendary solos. But every song is amazing. Keyboardist Shaun Martin died exactly a month ago. He was 45. Fagen and Becker named the band after a "revolutionary" steam-powered dildo mentioned in the William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch. Steely Dan is basically a band with few bsd songs. They have few hits, but many fantastic songs. Aja is a perfect jazz/rock/pop album. They have been sampled a lot. Kanye sampled Kid Charlemagne.
